I use all manner of apemen, cavemen and stone age people in my games, I use the treasure tables listed but then I make the treasures all raw metals, and minerals, nothing cut or formed. They dig around for shine-ies and treasure them far beyond their inherent value. They are usually strung in their matted hair or hung about their waists or necks on strings of sinew, tied with bits and bobs of various other "treasures" that are usually valueless baubles (they do not know any better). The leaders would just have more and "fancier" baubles IMHO.

not sure if it is a typo though....

I love it!

Ghul wrote:

Well, my interpretation is a little more strict than anything I've read above. I allow only a single attack for a backstab attempt; i.e., no two-weapon fighting allowed. I consider it to be a single, specialized action/skill not intended to be grouped with any advanced combat actions. Of course, do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. ;) If, however, anyone does decide to allow for a two-weapon attack on a backstab attempt, I would probably allow the bonus only on the primary weapon attack (which is in fact the first die roll of a two-weapon attack). Again, do what you think is best for your game, but that is how I handle it.

And that is why I love Hyperborea and Jeff’s version of the game. It is a raw, difficult to eek out an existence way of life. It is in fact the antithesis of “new school”. The PC’s get no bonuses other than those explicitly stated. Role-play matters more than roll-play, and characters are less heroes than targets of a harsh world where everything is out to get you. It’s a run for your petty existence fools kind of life. Haha.

So, after reading some more on the Magic Items of Hyperborea I noticed that the Staff of Life Essence has a property “perform exorcism” intrigued, I noted that there is also a spell called Perform Exocism (pg. 217 3E). My question is this, where in the rule book does it discuss how daemons possess characters or NPC’s? Looking under Daemons I didn’t see it.

Secondarily, how would or have any of you ruled on such things.

If I am completely missing something here, just point me in the right direction and call me dense.

I like the idea of the combat options, but I also like the idea of having the class specific abilities charted out. (ie. Heroic Fighting (Fighter), Familiar (Magician), Agile (thief), Divine Protection (paladin)) Just a quick blurb and pertinent bonuses.

Thanks Jeff!

I am hard at work on my portion of this thing and I am anxious to have you all see what we have cooked up for you this go around.

Another fine series this time from DC comics the black vault. The Last God is a tale of an adventuring group that defeats a “god” tho he returns when they are past their prime. Quite good read and the art is inspiring.

For Lost Cairns of the Savages the men (Half-bloods) are the monsters. What i did was qualify them as the following types and built a basic template for each type:

(I wont spoil anything here)

1. Braves- these are low level scouts and sentries- they have mastery of bows and small thrown weapons. They are essentially 2-3rd level. They will have Very low amounts of valuable treasure. They exist as a “monster” template only.

2. Warriors- these are your everyday fighters, they make up the bulk of warbands. They are essentially 4-6 level fighters and have mastery of bows, thrown weapons and melee weapons they will have a small amount of valuable treasure. They too exist as a “monster” template only.

3. Elites - these are warband leaders 1-2 for every full warband. They are 6-7 level fighters have grand mastery of a variety of weapons based on their level and specific place within the tribal society. They have more valuable treasure and may carry a (shaman) blessed magical item.these guys have built personalities and are feature NPC / monsters. They have a “monster” template but also a brief description and tactics they may employ.

4. Shaman acolytes- these are low level spell users of a variety of classes depending on their specific place in the tribal society. They may be witches, shamen, clerics or really any of the available classes. They will have low monetary treasure but will carry a small holy item, totem or relic based on their purpose. They accompany warbands. They have a “monster” template but have a brief description and tactic.

5. Shamen- these are higher level holy/sorcerous elites, they are rare, 1-2 per tribe. Again they may be of any spell using class and built individually to serve a specific purpose within the campaign. These are full fledged NPCs with a near complete character sheet.

6. Chief- they are high level fighter classes and are built individually as leaders of specific tribes. They are very few in number and report

Here is a quoted section from Jewels of Gwahlur, I think this paints what could be a lost world within Hyperborea...

It was like looking into the interior of a vast bowl, rimmed by a circular stone wall. The floor of the bowl was covered with trees and denser vegetation, though nowhere did the growth duplicate the jungle denseness of the outer forest. The cliffs marched around it without a break and of uniform height. It was a freak of nature, not to be paralleled, perhaps, in the whole world: a vast natural amphitheater, a circular bit of forested plain, three or four miles in diameter, cut off from the rest of the world, and confined within the ring of those palisaded cliffs.

But the man on the cliffs did not devote his thoughts to marveling at the topographical phenomenon. With tense eagerness he searched the tree-tops below him, and exhaled a gusty sigh when he caught the glint of marble domes amidst the twinkling green. It was no myth, then; below him lay the fabulous and deserted palace of Alkmeenon.

I am using some of the fiend folio for an adventure I am writing as well. Great resource, I always look to make sure it fits my vision for what Jeff's world is, and tweak it as necessary.

Besides, you cannot beat the fact that over half the creatures are illustrated by Russ!

I am all signed up to run three separate instances of Lost Cairns of the Savages at U-con. If you are in the area, stop in, say hey, and chat a bit. It will be good to dust off the old manuscript again, as I have not run anything on it for a few months.

Here is my lineup...
Looks like there are still spots left....

HYPERBOREA: Lost Cairns of the Savages

A sandbox adventure to the fog shrouded Black Feather Island where rumors persist that pre-historic savages built burial cairns which hold untold riches, but are they ripe for the picking or are they deadly ripe? Loosely based on Howard's "Wolves Beyond the Border" "The Black Stranger" and "Beyond the Black River" this game is refereed by AS&SH Illustrator Del Teigeler. Characters provided.
