HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

Greetings friends,

I would like to open a discussion on the new Ready Reference Sheets document for HYPERBOREA 3E. This document is slated to contain a variety of tables and charts for participants to access during game play, if such activities are deemed appropriate by the referee. ;)

In general, I think that a Ready Reference Sheets document should contain more information than what you'd see on the inside of a typical Referee's Screen, or else, what would be the point of it?

So, if you are interested in weighing in, please do so! What tables and charts would you find useful in such a document? I want it to be something that folks can print and have available on game day. A utilitarian resource. Many thanks!

Best,
Jeff T.

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

I feel like a brief section with details on Combat Options would be immensely helpful.

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

My two offerings (perhaps redundant with Waifs of the Boreas): the names tables in the PM Appendix A, and the height, weight and appearance tables.

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

I like the idea of the combat options, but I also like the idea of having the class specific abilities charted out. (ie. Heroic Fighting (Fighter), Familiar (Magician), Agile (thief), Divine Protection (paladin)) Just a quick blurb and pertinent bonuses.

Thanks Jeff!

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

The combat options portion of the rules seems to be the most frequently looked up rules at my table.  My players love them but sometimes forget which ones are available.

Ditto! My players most frequent book references are also the combat options.

I have found that when introducing new folks to the game, having a table of what classes require what minimum statistics to be incredibly useful - as they're "window shopping" for options based on what they've rolled. Have just been using one super basic one posted on discord.

Hello,

I'm a little hazy on what you mean, specifically. Are you talking about the basic functions of melee, missiles, magic, and movement, or maybe advanced combat options, or something else?

Cheers,
Jeff T.

We do have that info in there in the class selection part of the book, but it's not presented as a table; rather, each class and subclass is represented by a little bust illustration, and under that is listed the min requirements of the respective class or subclass.

What isn't included is their Prime Attributes, which is included only on the class pages.  I made a table with that info included on my wiki for my players to help enable their selections.

Answering the question at hand, I used Affinity Publisher to make a 3-page, double-sided reference guide for use at the table, which sounds a lot like what you're referring to.  Here's the information I included on mine:
   1. Flask Hurling/Oil Burning Rules
   2. Combat Matrix
   3. Combat Steps/Sequence
   4. Attack Roll Modifiers
   5. Armor Class Modifiers
   6. Advanced Combat Actions (small table and detailed info of each action)
   7. Critical Hit/Miss Results, extrapolated with the rules of when something happens and how to calculate damage/multiplying
   8. Healing rules (natural restoration/bed rest)
   9. Fall damage
   10. Death and Dying rules
   11. Item Saving Throws
   12. XP for Monsters table
   13. Melee Weapons (Table 76) w/ definitions of +#^ etc.
   14. Poison Table
   15. Missile Weaopns (Table 77) w/ Missile Weapons Table Defined section included
   16. Melee Attack Rate + Attack Rates Defined
   17. Movement rules (Cautious, double, half, charge, N.B.)
   18. Unskilled Weapon Attack Penalties per Class
   19. Missile Rates of Fire
   20. Attribute Score Tables (Score Mod, Adjustment, EX, etc.)
   21. Monetary Exchange Rate
   22. Armor + Shields (Table 74 + Table 75)
   23. Room and Board
   24. Potion Costs
   25. Potion Brewing Success
   26. Common Hirelings
   27. Overland Travel
   28. Concentration Check rules
   29. Mercenaries
   30. Specialists

Hope that helps!

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

That is a great starting point, maderschramm, and welcome to the forum. So, what we have here is a grea representation of the concept that I am looking to explore in this thread. The above list could function as a baseline for others to offer input. For example, Rhialto mentioned names and height/weight/appearance. What would you add to maderschramm's list? What would you remove?

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

I forgot that I also had the saving throw table (146)

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

I think splitting it into 2 separate sheets/guides would be a good idea.  One for character creation and one for playing..  I have a big whiteboard (4x8 feet) on the wall of my basement where we play and have written out all the stuff we found ourselves looking up.  Just the basic info and a page number so if we need more info it is easier to find.  Lots of stuff on it has already been mentioned but we also have all the healing listed with how much it heals.

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

After using this for a bit I think the only thing I would really like to add is the encounter distances for dungeon and wilderness and surprize and non-surprize events.

Of course, I don't see any room on the page where it would make sense to put this. So...no solution to offer. I just pencil it in.

As an aside, I do use the grenade-like missile miss chart from AD&D 1e DMG. I also use the different die for each range for distance.

That's never been in ASS&SH so...it wasn't something that was gonna be in something like this.

Regardless, it's very nice to have all of that info in one, smallish (hah!) booklet. Well, booklet for me since I have a large format (11x17) printer and a long arm stapler at my disposal.

Thanks for making this y'all.

What? Me worry?

Re: HYPERBOREA 3E Ready Reference Sheets

Might be good to include illumination distances for various light sources, as well as how long they last before burning out.
