What if it were being used as tactic? Maybe as a means of surprise or getting a shot at the soft underbelly of a beast? Possibly something like this:

Bestiary » Shake Damage for Canines » 3/10/2023 2:49 am |
Dogs and wolves have been straight ahead biters for pretty much all of D&Ds and it's descendants history but I started thinking about the way a dog finishes off it's prey (at least the smaller prey) with a vicious shake. So to give wolves, hell hounds, war dogs etc. a special bit of damage in line with the hug of a bear, rending of the carnivorous ape, or the back claw rake of a big cat how about if on a 18 or better the dog shakes for an additional bit of damage equal to or even double it's normal bite damage? This would only apply to creatures smaller than the dog or wolf. Since Hyperborea doesn't host a great deal of gnomes or halflings most PCs would be pretty safe from this attack from normal dogs and wolves but it would give dire wolves, hell hounds and winter wolves one more reason to be feared.
Bestiary » Other monsters that can be used as PC's » 3/06/2023 10:45 pm |
The giant wolverine comes to mind they are intelligent and can speak. They’re pure evil of course but that’s fine for an NPC (and PCS depending on campaign). A little low on manual dexterity, lacking thumbs, but maybe they can’t intimidate some lackeys into doing the heavy lifting.

It'll be great to have you guys back! I'm going to try for your Sunday game - I should have slept off Saturday night by the start time!
Campaign » Nightfall » 8/04/2022 6:32 pm |
Thanks guys! Luckily I write the recaps for my weekly scheduling emails so all I had to do was go thru and harvest them out of my sent box - I jogged my own memory doing that. Played session 100 but summer has slowed down the schedule significantly as usual.

I like the 3E rule - seems like a workable system to me. I missed that AC penalty - that adds a bit more bite to encumbrance discussions!

Ah, yes. Mr. Murder, Death, Kill (or something like that) was unable to make the trek so far south this season. I did hear murmurings of a possible trip to Texas one of these years, though. So, you never know.
It was great to chat with you a few times again sir! We rarely get to play in your GC games, but hopefully we can manage to sneak into another at a different venue again someday.
Always great to hang out with all our Hyperborea brothers and sisters at these events! Can’t wait for the next one!
I missed seeing that guy too! A lot of people I look forward to seeing didn't make it this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for next year. Great seeing all of you who were there!

Rules Discussion » Firearms Rules » 9/24/2021 12:23 pm |
Well cannons have been in play! In the next to last session one of the players rode up to a fortress to draw the enemies fire while the rest of the party executed the rest of their plan (causing some discussion of the first scene of Dances with Wolves and then the rest of Kevin Costner's oeuvre). Unfortunately for him they had a small cannon and got a shot at him as he was riding away. I've decided to go with the 10x10 area of impact from Hyperborea combined with the HR4 save vs parylyzation (I used a straight avoidance save in this case) or take big damage. Well it hit and he failed his saved but survived! His horse wasn't so lucky. He ended up sending out this clip to the group after the game(thanks wind!):
I've attached my rules, they're basically a mash up of the DMG, HR4 and Hyperborea. I really liked the area of effect concept but I didn't want to have to roll to hit everyone within it. I also wanted a resolution that would work ok with a TotM sort of setup. I added some mishaps to discourage the casual use of these powerful weapons (who am I kidding we're talking about PCs!). My wild shots table is a first cut. I'd love to hear if anyone has any thoughts.
Rules Discussion » Firearms Rules » 9/01/2021 12:04 pm |
Well I ended up using the HR4 rules - only hand weapons so far. I'm thinking I'll mash up the Catapult rules from Hyperborea if cannons ever get used. The party set up a pretty great ambush and managed to get a surprise round in on the 20 or so musketeers they faced and took out most of them with magic and missile weapons. Since not many left to shoot the damage inflicted by the firearms was minimal except for one errant round that hit the exploding dice number 3x in a row (Roll 20 - sometimes I'm not sure about your randomization algorithm)! The charging fighter it hit survived though, much to the chagrin of his opponents.

So my campaign is entering a land where there are some early modern type fire arms. I'm thinking of using the rules from the 2E sourcebook HR 4: A Mighty Fortress (I've used these rules before and thought they worked fine) but just wondering if any one else had any rules recommendations that would mesh well with Hyperborea.

Posting another batch of capsule recaps. All zoom/Roll 20 up until last session. It turns out zoom games when people are housebound are easier to schedule but looking forward to the next in person game! The players and characters have been:
terry – Sparky, Keltic Pyromancer
tellion - Rogue Wolf, Keltic Barbarian
wind – Snake Eyes, Neshfal Abomination (human combined with snake) Fighter/ Njal Viking Runecaster
joel - Kerryan, Kimmeri-Kelt Ledgerdemainist
rob – Garr, Kimmerian Necromancer/ Iphinessa, Half-Amazon Fighter
josh – Zarathia, Common Fighter
Session XLV: On Top of the World
Wherein the Party: took stock of a disorganized museum, were surprised by an unlooked for reappearance, viewed a pocket world, searched a string of deserted cottages, recovered armor and ancient idols, took a well needed rest, befriended an iridescent maiden, rode an elevator, received telepathy, bargained with an ancient alien, agreed to assist in a succession, agitated a pyramid, battled children, anointed an heir, made an escape, froze a pair of sentries, fled across snow covered hills, set an ambush, killed a horse, nearly lost a priestess, and defeated a band of vikings.
Session XLVI - Back in the High Life
Wherein the party: escaped Vikland, fought a sea monster, gave a hitchhiking wizard and his pet golem a lift (and received a potential lead), returned to Khromarium, moved back in to a ruin, asked a wizard about Kerryans condition, ventured to a skeleton strewn vale, freed an ancient sorceress, fought (and won) a big battle against followers of Mordezzan, and were given items of power by the Bonewoman .
Session XLVII - Monkey Business
Wherein the party: Met with a wizard, discovered some explosive news about Kerryan, discussed possible endeavors, made plans to visit an alchemist, hired a pair of mammoth drawn sleighs, headed out across the frozen swam
Comic Books and Graphic Novels » Arak » 7/06/2021 10:32 pm |
Big fan myself. When I was in high school I found the entire run at the local comic store for like .25 or .50 an issue - it was great an awesome mix of history and S&S. It really felt like a labor of love by Roy and Dani Thomas.
I actually was inspired by the first (I think) Arak comic for an early adventure in my Hyperborea campaign. This was the one where the two bands of Vikings fought over the corpse of a whale. It turned into a pretty great battle as my players fought Viking raiders and their thralls to gain needed sustenance in the midst of Nightfall and emerged victorious (unlike Arak they also found the still living Krakens' Daughter in the whales stomach).
I could see bringing in the man himself as he looks for a lost friend or enemy who disappeared on a western voyage and being sent to Hyperborea through his father's magic. There finding the trail long cold but still traceable on Vikland. The question would be long hair or mohawk Arak? And has he gained his full shamanic powers?
Bestiary » Refactoring Spell Resistance » 5/28/2021 1:36 pm |
So I'm a big fan of the Target 20 method for determining hits ( in AS&SH the equation is: FA/HD + Modifiers + AC = 20 or higher = Hit) so I took a look at the spell resistance ratings and tried to see if I could do a similar thing with the casters CA and make the math easier for me in running combat.
I started with the common 7 in 20 chance of spell resistance vs a CA 12 caster. Since for every CA level less than 12 the chance-in-twenty increases by a one a caster with CA 1 would face an 18 in 20 chance of resistance. To reverse this number the CA1 has a 2 in 20 chance of affecting the creature (and the CA 12 a 13 in 20 chance). Therefore for a 7 in 20 spell resistance you can use the equation of: 1 + CA level = chance of spell affecting in 20. I think this formulation makes for easier math and you can have the player roll if you like so they feel like they've defeated the spell resistance. Thoughts? Is my math correct?

That's an interesting point. Ghul are you thinking of a flat distribution for the spell % charts or will some spells be more common than other?

Nice use of a reaction roll! I've been trying to do more of that these days in negotiations. Also kudo's to your party for planning for the worst. I'm always so proud when they suss out those sorts of possibilities and plan for them. Even if - don't read any further if you're one of my players - they sometimes help me by pointing out obvious possibilities that I've overlooked!
Rules Discussion » Slow spell on flying griffin » 3/30/2021 12:53 am |
I had definitely never seen it before! A good use of a spell and totally foiled the swoop, grab, and drop from great height tactics (the party was standing atop a structure halfway up a steep mountain) the griffons had been planning on.

Scroll down for another take on Lemurians (though I think based on movie Atlanteans) from one of my favorite mini companies - they seem like they wouldn't be out of place in Hyperborea:
