Thanks all.  I checked the Spectre too.  Jeff’s point 1 is exactly how I feel.  It stopped the game dead (no pun intended), and compiled accounting atop very grumpy players!  As a consequence in game, it was always too ‘mechanical’, tied to a rule concept (experience points and levels), not a game character concept.

Hello all, I am curious as to the reasons behind the design decision in 3E to move away from energy drain for certain undead, and add a constitution drain effect instead?

Personally, I found level drains just too complex to administer, and really disheartening as a player to be on the receiving end!  It is quite a change from the original rules nonetheless.

Their true colours are revealed however.  Making your business dependent on a corporately owned entity, that holds a dominant position, is not wise.

I fully support Jeff and Hyperborea, and whatever his decision for the future of this superb game… but just don’t rely on the magnanimous spirit of Hasbro.

As of 27 October, my physical copy of the rules and map has been received, via Leisure Games in the UK. Given global shipping disruption, strikes at UK ports and, this week, strikes by postal workers, the books have been on an epic journey!  I went for the basic versions: the cover art is so very good.

I am in a dilemma now: I like 2nd ed a lot too, there is nothing ‘wrong’ with it, but 3rd ed is a little sweeter in many small ways.  First world problems!

Hi, did you order from Leisure Games?

Jeff, I did.  That’s good news; hopefully with me by October.

I ordered via my FLGS (who joined the KS), and I’d like to know when physical books may be available?

Thank you both, that has made it crystal clear.  I don’t think the wording ambiguous in 3rd ed., perhaps more so in 2nd., hence my confusion and question.

I am still enjoying 2nd ed, and intend to use it for sometime to come.  Once the 3rd ed. books arrive (pre ordered from my FLGS), I will save them for ‘pure’ Hyperborea games.  Otherwise, I’m planning to use 2nd ed as the basis for my Midderlands game (Glynn Seal’s beautiful setting).

First, to comment how impressive 3rd ed is, and what surprised me most was the layout improvements: I thought 2nd ed very well laid out, but 3rd drops information just where you need it but never realised!

My question: is it now the case that actions in a combat round occur in a set sequence, from melee to movement? I ask because, for 2nd ed, there was no sequenced actions per se, with character’s taking whatever type of action desired (albeit many ran it with a specific sequence it seems), beyond the 2 phases.

Further, ties of initiative revert to a run down of any type of action in DX order (e.g., DX 18 choosing to move 1/2 and attack, followed by next DX character who may shoot an arrow)?

Thanks.

Thank you all, that is now clear.

Hello all,

I would really appreciate some clarification on something bugging me badly: XP for magic items.  To quote the section (pg 434) “Each magic item is assigned suggested experience point (XP) and gold piece (gp) values. An item's XP value is intended for characters who retain the magic item earned or discovered. If the PC party elect to sell an item, the GP value is the typical sum derived from the sale. No additional XP is awarded for the sale of magic items.”

So, does this mean: 1) xp is awarded only if keeping an item, and 2) if selling the item, then no XP is earned even though it can be sold for a large cash value?

It is the term “typical sum” that throws me: sum of what? Gold, or XP?  Is the final sentence meaning that the XP value is not also added to any XP earned from selling a magic item?  Or, that selling items earns no XP?

CONFUSED!!

In the 2nd rules, page 270, is the distance covered in Movement per Day (Miles) for a 24 hour period, or just 8 hours (like foot movement)?

cheers.

I think it coincidental drafting, without any rules intent.  Any of your 3 options are entirely possible.

Hello, is there a formula to calculating the Undead Type from AD&D or other OSR sources?

What about if using magic items? Table 92 seems to allow movement after discharging a magic item; albeit it isclear that casting a spell then prevents further action that round.

If clerics successfully Turn, do they affect 2d6 undead of each affected Type of undead?  Example, 3 Shadow (Type 4)  and 3 groups of 8 Skeletons of Types 3, 2 and 1 respectively face a Cleric of TA 4 who attempts to Turn; rolling a 8 on 1d12.  Results are: none of the Shadows are affected; 2d6 Type 3 are Turned, 2d6 of Type 2 and finally 2d6 Type 1 are Turned.  Is this correct?

=17.41pxThe magic and movement section of rules (pg 254) are fairly clear that movement should not be allowed once discharging magic items or using special abilities.  But, table 92 appears to contradict this.  Is this an error?
