Convention and Game Day » Gary Con 2024 » 2/26/2024 5:06 pm

Me and my cohorts are attending, only got into one Hyperborea event though, "Carnal Creatures of the Ythaqquan Plateau', but it sounds like a banger! ... We're not loading our schedule as much as past years this time, want more free time to mingle and meet (and off grid game) ... Beside the Hyperborea event, we're in the AD&D tourney again this year, "Nexus of Elder Evil" (I spied DMPrata got a seat at that as well), a Top Secret:NWO event (ran by TS:NWO/Solarian main dude himself, Jayson Elliot), a Pirate Borg Game, and we finish off Saturday night with a 6 hour Gamma World ... We're super stoked ... Would love to meet up at some point with like-minded Hyperborea enthusiasts.

General Discussion » RIP Russ Nicholson » 5/17/2023 2:51 pm

Really sad news Jeff ... Have loved Russ's work, as you, since the Fiend Folio and the work he did for Games Workshop in the early days for White Dwarf, Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Roleplay ... He had a very unique style that was immediately identifiable as Russ Nicholson ... I started a tribute to him over on the Hyperborea Discord.

Convention and Game Day » GaryCon 2023 » 2/03/2023 10:24 am

Added your events to my planner Handy, looks to be pretty cool ... though, I notice you and Del Teigler have competing ASSH events at noon on Thursday .... Hmmmmm ... Decisions, decisions ...   So many good ASSH games/events this year ... Jeff's 'The Auroral Odyssey' sounds so awesome, but his games go fast.

I wonder if Jeff dropping the OGL 1.0a for the soon to be released Paizo authored Open RPG Content (ORC) license is a viable option for him/NorthWind? ... Many heavy hitters have already expressed solidarity with Paizo on it (Kobold Press, Troll Lord, and even Chaosium, to name a few), Goodman Games announced today that they too are hopeful to sign onto it (pending the final language).

I've backed every NWA Kickstarter (save the 1st Edition boxed set). You only receive complimentary pdf's with physical product if you are a Kickstarter backer. If you purchase physical copies post Kickstarter campaign you do not receive complimentary pdf's. It's a bonus to the Kickstarter backers. There are often good sales or bundles deal's to get pdf's very inexpensively though, keep your eyes peeled. Also, sign up for Jeff's NWA email list to be notified (https://www.hyperborea.tv/).

A little late to the game for the print version, but could be corrected in pdf form ... I just noticed that the Disintegration Pistol (description p.178) is not included in Table 230: Special Missile Weapons (p.160) in the Referee Manual, therefore there is no GP or XP value listed for it.

HYPERBOREA 3E » AS&SH Screen for 3E Hyperborea » 8/26/2022 11:07 am

It's 88% (give or take) compatible ... On the screen, only 4 out of 33 tables are not compliant with HYPE3 ...Table 79: Calculated Encumbrance is no longer needed, as encumbrance rules are greatly simplified in HYPE3 (but you could use if you like the granularity) ... Table 89: Basic Combat Sequence is changed for HYPE3, simplified ... Table 97: Two-weapon fighting is changed for HYPE3, simplified ... and Table 47: Shields is changed in HYPE3, there are only 2 types of shield now.

Very cool! ... Thanks Caveman.

I also very much enjoyed your ASSH conversion of Corey Waldens 'The Black Ruins' ... Top notch work, all around.

Hey Ben ... A Ghulish little birdy made it known over on the Discord server that the HYPE3 version of this may be impending ... Can't wait to see it/use it! ... Thanks man!

So ... Who's all going to Gary Con XIV?!? ... I know @Ghul and @mavfire are going, any other of you fine fellows and gals going? ... Perhaps we need an ASSH/HYPE3 meetup at the Con at some point, any ideas? I personally left my Saturday night free and clear for socializing/open gaming. Could maybe use the #lfg channel at the NWA Discord to coordinate?

So Stoked! ... I actually finally got into one of @ghul's events at GC! ... Can't wait to sit at Mr. Talanian's table, been a long time coming ... I also noticed I get to play in a second Hyperborea event with @mavfire, also a pretty cool proposition ... Very happy that I was actually able to get into every event I hoped for ... also stoked to get into two of Jim Wampler's MCC events. Hope to see some of you fine fellows/gals at the Con.

Going ... Not running any games officially, may look to run some pick-up games (or play in some) ... Will of course endeavor to sneak into one of the coveted slots in Ghuls few games, no luck in years prior, but I'll keep trying!

Rules Discussion » 3rd ed. combat sequence » 1/25/2022 1:27 pm

Antalon wrote:

First, to comment how impressive 3rd ed is, and what surprised me most was the layout improvements: I thought 2nd ed very well laid out, but 3rd drops information just where you need it but never realised!

My question: is it now the case that actions in a combat round occur in a set sequence, from melee to movement? I ask because, for 2nd ed, there was no sequenced actions per se, with character’s taking whatever type of action desired (albeit many ran it with a specific sequence it seems), beyond the 2 phases.

Further, ties of initiative revert to a run down of any type of action in DX order (e.g., DX 18 choosing to move 1/2 and attack, followed by next DX character who may shoot an arrow)?

Thanks.

Hi Antalon ... Per this thread (https://hyperborea.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=1245) it appears 2nd Edition (and 1st) was ran as you state, that's also how I've run it for my group as well (though I'd be interested to hear Ghul thought's on this as well) ... I certainly anticipate running the new 3rd Edition Combat sequence as such when my group finally reconvenes. I don't see it as game breaking running the combat steps as you (and I) see it, or as firm sequenced steps as others seem to run it (and perhaps as Ghul intends).

How have I never heard of these guys?!? ... Just "discovered" the recent remaster of their first album 'Frost and Fire' and have gone down a rabbit hole finding their other releases .... They're reformed and just put out a new album a year or so ago ... Check 'em out!

Hey BA23 ... So, with all the additional Race/Culture options in 3rd Edition, will 'Waifs of the Boreas 3' be on your list of things to do eventually? ... The prior versions have been an indispensable resource, and many thanks to you for those.

Hey Jeff @Ghul  ... Not a typo per se ... But, could the Centerfold Map in the Atlas pdf be made a single image as opposed to two halves on separate pages? ... Love what I'm seeing so far overall, I'll be sure to send any found typos to your email as requested. Thanks!

This sounds awesome Gizmo ... I've had a plan for this type of eventuality for my players for a long time, but they've never taken the bait ... I plan to plunk them into Carcosa via the Geoffrey McKinney material for LotFP and his general OSR Carcosa hexcrawl modules. The Carcosa material isn't for everybody (it can be pretty disturbing and takes Otherworldy Horror to it's extreme ... pretty sure I read Ghul isn't a fan), but it definitely has the feel of a place out of time and space.

Super stoked for this announcement Jeff! ... a few bullet points regarding the announcement:

- Mixed feelings for a return to a two volume edition. I love the convenience of having it all in one place/volume, but can certainly understand reasons for splitting it up again ala 1st Edition. A slipcase option must be made available though, please. (stretch goal?)
- As @BlackKnight said ... indexes! I recall this was already planned when it was only going to be a 2nd Edition reprint, so I assume this is still planned.
- Very mixed feelings on the official name change. It will always be 'Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerer's of Hyperborea' to me. I know it's a mouthful, but its a glorious mouthful. Once again, I can see the logic and reasoning behind the decision, but it saddens me a bit.

Other than the above few items, I relish the notion of more glorious art, perhaps a few needed rules clarifications/tweaks, and perhaps some other, yet to be revealed, surprises (fingers crossed). Bring on the Kickstarter Jeff!

I had a very similar idea, but I went one step further, the PC's would start in another game system altogether. Given the Weird Tales connection of AS&SH, and obviously that same dynamic in Call of Cthulhu, my plan was to start my group playing Call of Cthulhu, PC's generated for the CoC system and everything, actually play a few sessions of CoC with those characters, then by virtue of a Gate spell (or the like) they would be transported to Hyperborea. At which point we'd do some sort of conversion to AS&SH stats/class/etc. and away we go ... I had also toyed with the idea of this with just one of my players being transported alone, from modern age/CoC setting into an existing group of AS&SH PC's, fish out of water concept. Very cool idea though.

First off, my apologies for "necro-ing" this thread.

@Ghul ... I was wondering if anything further has happened on the continuation/development of this incredibly useful tool? It seems like a few years ago you'd taken the reigns from @Maezar and seemed to have plans to update the sheet to 2nd Edition specifications, then ... nothing further. Obviously this wouldn't/shouldn't necessarily be high on your priority list in the grand scheme of things, and that's okay, but I'm just curious if this is still a probability, or DOA?

Thanks!

It's just not something I have the time or resources to invest in right now, so it remains in limbo, I'm afraid.

Thought as much, oh well ... maybe I'll have to step up my Excel skills and see what I can do, for my personal use only of course ... Thanks for the speedy reply (as always) Jeff/@Ghul!
