General Discussion » Castle Zagyg vol 1. Back in print » 11/14/2023 11:02 pm

Yggsburg is back in print. Apparently some arm twisting is in progress to attempt restart the Castle Zygag line.

I watched a couple interviews with the TLG team and they mentioned Gary had named Ghul the head honcho on the project back in the day-- they also said they'd likely try to reach out to him for advice should the legal arm twisting prove successful.

It went very well; they loved it. My players are quite clever, very strategic and they brought a stable of hirelings to die on their behalf. I could see a less well prepared group having some difficulty though.

Ive run "sailors on a starless sea" for a level 1 party.
The chaos lords are discribed as hyperboreans-- dungeon contains a shrine that is a clear reference to the shrine of xathoqqua from "tale of satampra zeiros". Some ideas are pilfered from the greyhawk "moat house" and the "temple of tharazdun". just swap the monsters & treasures for their near equivalent in Hyperborea.

A dungeon crawl inspired by "the seven geases" would be pretty interesting, no?

Where are the other 980 eyes though!? 😡

Damn, I just got Immolated! XD
Another unsuspecting victim of the Dread Necromancer!

HYPERBOREA 3E » Ogl? » 1/10/2023 10:18 pm

But they were, all of them, deceived, for another OGL was made. In the land of Seattle, in the fires of WotC, the Dark Lord Williams forged in secret a master OGL, to control all others. And into this OGL she poured her greed, her malice and her will to dominate all TTRPGs.

ONE D&D

Hyperborea is by far my preferred  system for fantasy roleplaying-- even when I run AD&D Waterdeep/Undermountain. Now I use Hyperborea as the core game & hack in a homebrew "race as class" system for Elves, Dwarves & Halflings. also converted to ascending AC.  can't be the only one right?

General Discussion » Using Reincarnated from Goodman » 1/09/2023 3:39 am

When I ran Goodman's "Into the borderlands" I used the AD&D 2e monstrous manual to fill in the gaps for monsters I did not choose to replace.

This hits the sweet spot!
100% using this.
Brilliant Imagination.

Sorcery » Shield of the Ram » 3/12/2022 4:33 pm

Thanks for the insight!

Sorcery » Shield of the Ram » 3/12/2022 2:14 pm

The ranger certainly isn't wrong! It should perhaps be something more like 1d2+2 base damage to closer represent a small shield set at a charge; but it's hard to say, since I've never seen a ram's charge stat-ed for an Osric compatible system.

The shield is an homage to "the ring of the ram" from AD&D 2e.

Awesome monster! I may use this tonight.

Rules Discussion » attack rate & sapping hands » 2/08/2022 6:47 pm

Some great points being made-- I appreciate the feedback!

Rules Discussion » attack rate & sapping hands » 2/07/2022 10:08 pm

To be fair, relegating the sapping hands ability to "pretending" to lay on hands every time, renders it arguably ineffectual and certainly monodimensional in the scheme of a larger campaign.

Trickery of that sort is hardly lawful evil-- which seeks to crush its foes forthrightly & with a perverse sense of honor rather than play such games.

if a fell paladin has to trick somebody every time he uses it, rather than making a touch attack that makes it a significantly worse ability than the versatile lay on hands in this ones opinion.

and given that evil foes are more common than good ones in most campaigns the fell paladin is down 2 for 2 with its righteous wrath equivalent ability.

Swordsmen & Sorcerers » worship by fell paladins » 2/06/2022 1:35 am

Beyond Thaumagorga, which other gods are appropriate for the worship of a fell paladin?
I am tempted to allow a pictish fell paladin to venerate TLAKK-NAKKA because of the creatures association with witchcraft, death, & fate; however I feel that the use of poison would violate the paladin's honor code.
