Hi folks!

Rob from Wisconsin (U.S.) here.

I started playing first edition AD&D around 1983 with some guys in high school and have been hooked on all manner of gritty fantasy genre games ever since. I currently run an old school monthly 1E campaign that has been going on for several years now. I also play in a detailed AS&SH campaign run by a fellow member of this board.

My wife and I attend several gaming conventions throughout the year where we have met a lot of the talented people here. (and hope to meet a few more) We play in as many old school style games as we can together and I usually run a few sessions of this or that as well.

I’ve only been playing AS&SH for a few years now, but I really dig the system a lot. I have started running home brewed sessions at the conventions as well, and it always seems to go over big with the attendees.

I hope to start checking in here more often and maybe become a bigger part of this great Hyperborean community!

Oh ya, in real life......I’m a Runegraver. (I wish)

You sound like a real hidden gem...

Unfortunately, our campaign is on hiatus, since our FLGS has suspended open gaming until at least April 1st. We look forward to resuming, and whenever that day comes, i'll continue posting updates here.

I'm sure it was a tough decision to come to, but good on you for making it. Like Handy said, we'll miss seeing you. Maybe you should head to Game Hole instead!

I'm running a Hyperborea campaign at The Source Comics and Games in St. Paul, MN. I'll post session overviews here, and talk freely about it, as I'm fairly certain my players don't read this message board.

The core group is 5 players, with expansions possible as there are part time players who may take the leap to regulars. We play every two weeks, on Sunday afternoons at our FLGS, so if you're reading this, and in the Mpls/St. Paul area, hit me up.

I'm starting out by throwing in a lot of stuff that I've run at Cons, and developed over time, as I get the feel for how the group dynamic is. If you've played in my games at Gary Con and/or Gamehole, you might recognize some of the stuff I post.
Speaking strictly as a GM, I've never gamed with most of the players, beyond a learning scenario I ran for them two weeks ago, and I want to see how they respond and interact. I don't want to try shoving certain techniques or adventure types down their throats, so I'm probably going to throw different things at them and see where they want to take them.

Session 1 Overview:
My games tend to have a high mortality rate, and considering the number of part time players, I figured a DCC-esque funnel type opening would probably work nice, so each of the 5 players rolled up 3 characters.
They eagerly made their 3 PC's, writing down the essentials on note cards. I opened the campaign with my Chains of Minotaurios game that I've run at Cons.
The players all find themselves awakening, chained to opposite walls from each other. Their ankles fettered, manacles about their wrists, and heads bound in iron. None are aware of how they got there, nor have any memory of what they were last doing. They are hungry, barely clothed, and frankly, a little jittery. The sounds of violence emanate from an unknown distance beyond the wooden door at the head of the room. At the rear of the room, lies shelv

Also a reason I dont put alignment on pregens. Too stifling.

At the end of the day, we have a short window of a few hours to sink the hook of AS&SH into a con players mouth, run and complete a somewhat decent adventure, and make sure the players are having a fun time (or at least glad they chose to spend their time playing with you).
Focusing on anything else than these 3 is folly. Too many GM's lose sight of the fact a player is at your table at their leisure, not the GM's.

I've never done it, and probably would pass on running something that dictated me doing so. I find most of my convention players are either playing Hyperborea for the first time, or have played with me before, but haven't done so since my game at the previous convention. Meaning they are focused on either trying to learn the game on the fly, or trying to recall the game while not dying.
Because of this, I want them to focus on learning how to enjoy the game, rather than their characters backstory.
Plus, frankly, I already take enough time explaining the system/setting/mechanics as it is, and devoting more time to explain character backstory isn't something I'm interested in. Not to mention putting further strain on a voice that's probably already hoarse as it is, in an environment that is likely loud
Frank is coming from the standpoint of where he's always running a game in board room, or room with maybe 1-2 more tables and can talk at a normal conversational level. There's zero issues with players hearing him, not to mention the luxury of not having to explain how the game works to a considerable amount of the table.

Which ones are you partial to?

I think the layout and organization of Blue Medusa is awe inspiring, but Alice in Wonderland stuff just leaves me cold. Stonehell is evocative and interesting, but I got tired of the one page dungeon format after a while. Dwimmermount was soured by all of the travails getting the thing published. The Castle of the Mad Archmage is huge and evokes the spirit of Greyhawk, but it ended up leaving me cold.

Barrowmaze remains my favorite. I love having dungeons filled with the undead. I am also partial to the various follow up Megadungeons that Mr. Gillespie has published.

What megadungeons have you all used?

You might want to consider looking at StoneHell. Michael Curtis did a nice job writing it, and there's lots of undead (it's a former prison).

I've got the 1e and 2e versions of Undermountain, Tegel Manor (1e), Citadel of Fire, Caverns of Thracia, Badabaskar, 2e Ruins of Greyhawk, Stonehell, and at one time or another had Rappan Athuk, Barrowmaze, Dwimmermount, World's Largest Dungeon, and seemingly a zillion others.

If I were to write one, or run one again, I'd simply pull what I like, thematically, along with things I consider to be the best parts, with my own spin of course, and create something out of that. I don't know there's anything that's out there that aligns with everything I'd want to do, that I can just pull out and go with, as written.
Except for whatever Ghul writes, of course.

Any Hyperborea Seekers in the Twin Cities? I've been convinced to start running a campaign at FFG in Roseville, and am wondering if anyone on the board is from the area?

If so, let me know and maybe we can cross paths!

I'll be back also. This time running some Hyperboria too as I did AD&D this past Gamehole. Also, for those who know me, I was incognito from my usual Manowar apparel on Halloween although some astute folk did see past my disguise. See some of you at Gary Con and some of you at Gamehole!

Good to see you last week bro. Loved the Halloween costume! See you at Gary Con!

For those interested, the dates of next years GameHole are November 5th - 8th, at the Alliant Energy Center.
www.gameholecon.com

If you haven't attended, it's a really, really well run convention, and a lot of fun. There's a great presence for AS&SH there, along with some other like minded OSR type RPG's.

I'll be there, again, running 4+ games of Hyperborea, and I'll post my schedule when it's time for event submission.

Here's mine:

Hyperborea: A Heist in Khromarium

His demise comes with a once in a lifetime opportunity, to pilfer his treasury. =11ptBut, you must be careful of watchful eyes, and the potential for his own gang to come after you.No experience necessary. Level 3 characters will be provided.
 Thurs: 8AM - Noon

Hyperborea: Zorozin's Bargain

Zorozin, the powerful Khromarium sorcerer/sage you've allied with in the past, has summoned you to his tower. But something seems off about his tower, and the very air around it..No experience with AS&SH necessary.
Level 5-7 characters will be provided.

Thurs: Noon - 4pm

A Respite from a Blizzard

Your party is caught in a sudden, violent blizzard, while trekking through the Spiral Array. Desperate for shelter, you hole up in a cave that has odd carvings on the walls. Eventually, your campfire causes an odd, thick mist that fills the cave, drowning out all sound and sight. When the mists recede, you are no longer in the cave..=11ptNo experience with AS&SH necessary. Level 4-6 pregens will be provided.

Thursday 6pm - 10pm

I don't care about Star Wars at this point.  It's best days are long gone.  I don't care about any of the lineages, nor do I care about the return of probably the worst supervillain and key-stone-cop keepers of law and order, in cinema history.
