Ya, I fell victim to that same thing. Weird and pretty unnecessary.

Say Handy.... If the wife and I try to get into one of your games and fail, is there any chance that you might have an extra ghost seat or two figured into your games for walk-ups? I know some people only like to run for 6 players, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask here, just in case.

I don't mind running for 8, provided there are chairs ad enough space at the table. I'd def. give priority to someone on the waitlist. I find that there's a pretty good chance of people not showing up for the Sunday afternoon game, too. I have run for as few as two people on Sunday. Though I think two of the people signed up for my Sunday game this year are friends of mine, so they *better* show!

So, short answer: yes! But do put yourself on the waitlist so it's fair to others.

I hope for the best, but the track record for GC registration day is........not good.

There were some minor lags during the gold reg last week, so I hope they boost the servers up to eleven for this one.

Back of the envelope:

For AS&SH events, of 46 tickets, 10 are sold
For AS&SH 2e events, of 189 tickets, 60 are sold

Removing the 16 and 3 for observing Ghul run the game, we have

219 total tickets, with 67 sold so still 152 open seats.

Sure, folx here will want games other than AS&SH, but that's not too shabby going into general registrations.

Also, can I mention how annoying I find it that there are two categories for AS&SH with GC? I registered my games as AS&SH because I don't find the edition distinction worth dwelling on. The game's the game!

Two deviations.
 * Monks can do two-weapons fighting with a DX below 13, but only empty handed.
 * Monks with a DX below 13 suffer a -3 penalty with their Secondary Weapon instead of a -2

I erred on the side of being complete about the change which includes much of the BtB text. Mostly to avoid pedants looking for holes to wiggle through.

Pedant's Wiggle was one of Rhialto the Marvellous's favorite spells, right?

Convention and Game Day » Gary Con XII (2020) » 2/19/2020 8:16 am

I was kind of shocked by how many seats are still open in games that I (and, presumably, many folx here) would be interested in. I grabbed a seat in a couple of games just to give to Silver friends on Sat., thinking those might be in hot demand -- and found that there were still seats left even of what had been released last Sat.

So ... dunno. But I'm already in several games with friends, who also are also in several games with friends ... so, I dunno, I have hope. As long as you're not trying to get into Ghul's game, it seems doable.

General Discussion » Hyperborean races based on real world races? » 2/13/2020 8:22 am

There's no reason to assume the Hyperboreans and Atlanteans are sexually incompatible for any biological reason. There's also no reason not to. I'm just saying there's no default position here.

Viz. https://hyperborea.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=519

If they are biologically sexually incompatible, the word we're looking for is "speciation" -- in Myperborea, Atlanteans have ovipositors and cloacas. Certain bargains had to be made with science and the gods of the sea. Which makes them a different but related *species*.

Hyperboreans are clearly just moody jerks.

Wolf Packs is a superb looking game.  The rulebook is rich with great ideas and pulp vibe.  A terrific take on the mesolithic world.

Re POD, it is possible to get a print on demand version via Drivethru.  The POD version is not listed with the PDF version, but appears to have a separate entry (so I can see how it might be easy to miss there being two formats).

Thanks, Doctor! Probably I hadn't checked in a while to see if the POD was available. Good to know. I loved what I had read in the PDF, but it's just not a format I can use terribly well for longer works.

Handy Haversack, that's pretty much exactly what I needed to know, thanks!

I have run Ynn many times, I usually have it sitting just off camera waiting for a PC to stumble upon a journal describing it and how to enter it in a journal picked up among loot. Anyone/anything describing Ynn always uses the most exultant and flowery praise, more than enough to get PCs to enter, quickly get lost, and run for their lives. Even in a convention setting, it never fails to freak players out.

I wish Emmy Allen would do a POD version of her ice age RPG! I feel like it could have definite AS&SH applications -- made me think especially of when BA23's players ended up rather far back in the past. But, yes, Ynn is an excellent product from a sharp-as-a-magic-spear-that-cuts-through-anything gaming mind.

Like I said in your other thread, BA718, I throw adventures from all over the damn place at AS&SH and never find that it's the systems that create friction but the level of skill with information presentation and understanding that the adventure writer brings to the table, vis-a-vis my prep time and smoothness in running it.

General Discussion » Hyperborean races based on real world races? » 2/12/2020 8:44 am

There are no real-world races, let's not forget. Only cultures. That's what I'd use on my AS&SH char. sheet were I ever to design one.

But AS&SH cultures best align with those found in the writings of Howard, Smith, and Lovecraft rather than anything from regular boring old earth.

General Discussion » Running GARDENS OF YNN with AS&SH - discussing atmospheric gaming » 2/12/2020 8:40 am

Hi again, BenA718.

I ran Ynn in my AS&SH game not long after it came out (the PCs had tried to assassinate their patron in Brigands Bay and cocked it up SPECTACULARLY and had to get lost in a HURRY; so: Ynn).

I found that very little was needed from me to creep them out -- they were lost and confused and oddly obsessed with the materials of the various strange portals trying to figure out patterns -- and it was the lack of a pattern that really started creeping them out. All I had to do was present them with what's in front of them.

Importantly, in Ynn, there are a lot of INTELLIGENT creatures who have been dealing with that environment for a very long time. So there's lots of room for faction play and RPing, which is good because the few times they tried going toe-to-toe with something they got their asses handed to them. Plus, terrible bad luck with surprise dice and a giant preying mantis. But reaction rolls and charisma adjustments become IMPORTANT.

In my half-assed Hyperborean lore, the clan of Hyperboreans that developed Ynn when theirs was a multiverse-spanning empire of eldritch power degenerated along with the rest of the culture but rather than falling into Xathoqqua worship and terrestrial squabbles went strange and fey and and feral in their garden realm -- and that's the Sidhe and the Idea of Thorns.

Rules-wise, I think the most friction between setting and system in Ynn comes in resting. They might end up harried and desperate until they figure out to retreat "upward" before resting.

Seven of us, generally. Maybe meet for a happy hour or something near Brooklyn Strat some time?

Awesome, thanks for your insights! My group is similar -- we range from Gerritsen Beach to Washington Heights, but game @ Brooklyn Strategist (which is great, btw).

Cool! One of my players ran a 5e public game there for a while. I'm closer to the Twenty-Sided Store so know it a little better than BS -- and then often will just head for the Compleat Strategist if I need a fix!

We should bring the groups together some time!

Nice -- we play in Greenpoint but come from Midwood, Bay Ridge, Washington Heights, Woodside, Carroll Gardens, all over the place.

We haven't. I can't think of one from 1e I'd need that isn't represented. We do take classes from a few other places -- mostly blogs. Plus the mystic as written up on this board.

Aerial monsters should 100 percent be noticing the thing. Ancient war machines abandoned in sinks of spoiled magic should be suddenly reactivated when it flies by, corrupted programming sending them off stalking it, leaking eldritch mutagens as they go. Literally every person who sees it should be selling that info to anyone they can until some real badasses shoo everyone else away and come to take it!

That is: mo' money, mo' problem. The airship is cool, but it should always and only be an adventure attractor, I feel.

You are an evil genius! Love it.

I concur. If you ever seek to squash the hopes and dreams of your players, just ask for advice from Handy Haversack! LOL

Quick and dirty list of adventures we've used in our game in the past year and their system:

Praise the Fallen: OSR/system neutral
The Monastery of Inexorable Truth: S&W
Hybrid Bone Effigy Crucible of the Urgent Chimera: Homebrew AS&SH
The Barbarian King: OD&D
The Charmed Grotto: S&W
House of Flowers: Five Cataclysms
Barrow Mound of the Gravemoor: OSRIC
Brazen Bull: AS&SH
Kellerin's Rumble: S&W?

I barely even glance at system for adventures. It all works fine.

Also: good to see a New Yorker around these parts. You in 718?

The Tavern » Curiosity: How DO you put your gaming group(s) together? » 2/07/2020 8:23 am

We're pretty catch as catch can. I just make no secret of gaming in any of the various social worlds I move through, so those who are interested end up asking about it. Usually that's already enough screening to strain out the a-holes, but basically if any one player in the group is uncomfortable with someone, then they don't get to join in.

But most of the crew has been in the game FOrever now!

So I guess my only technique is to have lots of different social worlds: canoeing, music, work, local bars, beer-league softball. It's a funnel!

Hi, kids. When running Xambaala, do most of you handle the outer city/ruins area as a modified hex crawl, as per the map in the module? Each hex is 1/4 mile, so not quite wilderness scale, right?

My first session is a week away... super psyched.

Thanks for any advice!

The scale is pretty small for a hex crawl. Any party with a ranger or other tracker is probably going to be able to go right along the trail from town to oasis to camp to Palace. Otherwise, I'd have the oasis, mausoleum and ridge to the SE be the obvious features when they leave town and let what they choose decide what happens next. But unless you actively want to obscure the trail, it should be pretty trivial to get to a place that the anthropophagi travel to with some frequency.

Gizmo, if you search for the "Character Sheet of Wondrous Automation" thread, I added a lot of one-line spell descriptions there.
