Hey folks. I've noticed a few Greyhawk fans are also Hyperborea fans. Has anyone done the work to attempt to place Hyperborea as Oerth's North Pole? Does doing that detract from the setting do you think? Has anyone done the mapping work? Does it fit?

I'm going to resurrect this thread to say I'd love to be a player in a pbp game. If anyone wants to start one let me know.

'Adventure Actions and Procedures' start on pg 253 (254 of the pdf). They're further detailed under 'Time' and 'Movement' on pg 256 (257 of the pdf).
They aren't formalized into steps, though.

Yeah. That's exactly what I mean. In the B/X, BECMI, AD&D, OSRIC, and OSE rules those steps are laid out. I think it would be helpful if they were included in a future edition of Hyperborea.

For example:

OSRIC on page 145 notes the following steps for Dungeon Crawls... (Which is virtually the same as OSE).

1. Wandering Monster Check
2. Statement of Actions
3. Encounters
4. Book-Keeping

And on page 150, OSRIC notes the steps for Wilderness Hex-Crawls (see page X23 in Cook-Marsh):

1. Weather
2. Navigation
3. Wandering Monster Check
4. Move and Act
5. Encounter
6. Camp
7. Wandering Monster Check & Encounter

And OSE, (from the SRD), has steps for an Encounter (page B23 in Moldvay) which has not yet turned into combat:

1. Surprise
2. Encounter distance
3. Initiative
4. Actions and response
5. Conclusion

Now, I know these steps and so will most of players familiar with either the Basic or Advanced lines of D&D. But I think that newish players coming from 3e-5e and looking into Hyperborea for the first time could use these actually in the Hyperborea books.

Greetings fellow Hyperboreans!

I thought it might be good to have a short list of works to read that would introduce the uninitiated to the Weird Pulp Fantasy / Sword and Sorcery genre.  The purpose is to give a good sense of what the Hyperborea setting is like and the fiction it’s  based on.

Of course the authors are mentioned in the core books, but what works of theirs would you single out? What’s your short list?

Unlike the Combat Steps and Sequence on pages 265 & 267 of the Player’s Manual, I do not see similar sequences for Dungeons, Wilderness Exploration, or Encounters. I’m assuming I can just use the B/X (OSE) ones?

For example there are steps and sequences for Encounters, for Dungeon Crawling, and Wilderness Exploration. I could simply use the B/X procedures but if there are some in the Hyperborea books I missed I’d like to know.

I'm not sure what's changed in 2nd or 3rd editions, but as 1E defined WISDOM  "an evaluation of common sense, insight, judiciousness, perception, prudence, and understanding...representing one's emotional, intellectual, psychological, and spiritual willpower."  seems to cover fear.   I just have players perform test or feat against that attribute.

I really like this option. It uses the existing resolution system. Thanks!

Are there any rules for fright or horror? Often in pulp stories, especially CAS and Lovecraft horror at otherworldly monstrosities is a thing. Any rules to reflect that?

Hey. I'm Matteus. I have always loved Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. My love for Sword and Sorcery fiction eventually led me to D&D. I was introduced to the game during the 4e period with Pathfinder 1e. I played a lot of 5e until I found out about B/X and OSE (which I think are far superior). I had also developed an interest in the Greyhawk setting because it was the most "Sword and Sorcery" of the standard TSR settings.

When I heard about Hyperborea, I thought it might be something I'd enjoy based on my fondness for Howard Sword and Sorcery fiction. I'm glad I did check it out. What I love about this setting, (beyond it's pulpy goodness), is that it is just detailed enough. There is lots of room to expand, explore, develop, and "make it your own". There isn't a "expanded universe" of lore you might run afoul of. There are whole sections of the map which are yours to do with as you will. That's awesome.

I wish I'd heard about it during the kickstarter! But, at least I've put in the order for the 3e bundle. In the meantime, the PDFs will do! Great to be here.
