Indeed, perfect example!

Yes, or fishing around in a pouch for the right rune. All the more reason for it to take their action.

I did as well initially. Now I imagine Runegravers brandishing their runes in the same way a cleric brandishes their holy symbol.

Yes, the cutting of the palm and dripping blood on the rune is done when "enchanting" the rune, not during the "invoking" of the rune. The 1HP/spell level "pain" takes effect upon invoking. The analog to other spell casters is "enchanting" = "memorization" and "invoking" = "casting".

The poem is recited during the rune creation process (p.87 of the Player's Manual), not upon casting. It does take a cast ("invoke") action, and since the Runegraver is a cleric subclass I'd rule that they can maintain their weapons and shield in hand while invoking, but no other action (aside from moving beforehand, like any spell caster).

Any treasure: the "e.g., gold, gems" is the giveaway, since those are just examples, not an exhaustive list.

Very interesting items specific to Hyperborea. Cheers!
Sorcery » Q: Continuous Light: » 9/24/2024 5:31 am |
Obviously it's your game, and if I were a player I'd just want to know how it worked (not necessarily why: it's your Hyperborea, after all ). I'd also want to know about consistency, e.g. does continuous darkness work similar to or different from continuous light? Again, I don't necessarily need to know why, just need to know, so I can plan accordingly as a player. Cheers!
Sorcery » Q: Continuous Light: » 9/23/2024 5:56 am |
I always interpreted it as light centered on a point, filling an unobstructed area: walls and such would obstruct/block the light. I'd also rule that it extends out to the limits of the area only, and beyond the area there would be darkness, no shadow.

Very cool, I'll endeavor to read/reread as time permits, and look forward to the podcast!
Rules Discussion » Casting in melee? » 7/25/2024 11:10 am |
Under most circumstances, I wouldn't permit a spell and a single attack combination. One spell, never combined with any attack, or multiple attacks: casting and attacking are two exclusive options, and can't be combined, in my opinion.
However, the case of something like Shocking Grasp is interesting: would it allow for an attack which misses, then a second attack? I'm not sure where I come down there, but still inclined to rule: melee or magic, pick one per round.

Well, it sounds like you're well enough that the shirt saved you from Xathoqqua's Woe...cheers!

Looks like a good conversion. "Modifiers" is misspelled...

Hmmm, anything older than this past March is gone, but the couple I have from March are still there. Dang, now I'm sure to forget to whom and about what I sent over the years...
Rules Discussion » Combat actions » 4/20/2024 4:58 am |
I'd probably give the player the option of cautiously retrieving their weapon (i.e., use their action to pick it up, and no AC penalty) or quickly retrieving it (Test of Dexterity, no AC penalty) in order to attack in that round. Fail the test, it's still on the ground and they can try again the next round. I suppose they could also decide to pick it up nonchalantly, in which case they'd be treated as stunned (+4 to-hit) or at best fleeing (+2 to-hit).
Rules Discussion » Combat actions » 4/14/2024 6:50 pm |
It's an action for me too: it's Xathoqqua's Woe for a reason...allowing a move to pick it up and then attack just doesn't seem woeful enough to me.
