It's kinda cheesy, but just make up for it somehow.

I've always gone with "what is rolled is Rolled" when it comes to magic items, but in some cases, the Magic far outweighs the levels and needs to be accounted for. A Zirconium suit would be news, and many Much Higher level people would probably want to track it down, and so would the original owner.

That's good. I'll hang on to that thought.
I was thinking about the party in the middle of a battle with whatever and in the middle of it, the PC wearing the suit magically disappears. Seems that a shaman from a small village up in the north has been scrying for a village champion to save them from some powerful foe or foes attacking them. A lot of the menfolk have been slaughtered and they need a hero so the shaman "summoned" the mighty warrior in the magical suit of armor (I had all the players make a 2nd character "just in case" so they'd be none the wiser - this way, the player whose PC disappeared would have a character to play). I'd also take him aside before the game to let him know what's going on and offer some kind of compensation at the end of the adventure.

Well, time to send my intrepid adventuers off on another journey. They're all about 3rd level so I can start throwing tougher things at them. Got something special: one of the players came into possession of a Zirconium Suit (my bad) And I've been trying to figure out how to get it away from him without it being meta-gamey, so it's time to build the adventure around him using giants.
Now, I just gotta figure out what type, where they'd be, the story, etc. I'm thinking a small war between fir and frost giants with hill giants stuck in the middle or something like that. A shaman "summons" said character with suit and the rest have to go find him. Now I just gotta figure out where this all take place. I'd rather not do Underborea as that's a bit too much for me. Possibly using some of the AD&D Giants series, modified. Just gotta get the location ironed out.

Well, been playing and GMing since 1st Edition and I just got my 3E books, so I'm thinking of making the jump and Hyperborea-izing my regular D&D campaigns. My world is generic in the sense that I've used several systems (D&D Rules Cyclopedia, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, Fantastic Heroes and Witchery, etc.) and I'd like to keep the tropes but kind of overlay Hyperborea on to it. In other words, I want to keep the demihumans, humanoids, monsters, etc. but use the  Hyperborea rules and most of the Pup Fantasy stuff.
Let's see what happens, shall we?

I figure if there's something lacking I can always go "back to the source" AKA 1E AD&D.

YouTube sensation "captcorajus" has posted a great new video in which he discusses several traditional RPGs, including Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea! He talked about some great games (I knew them all well, except one called Dark Dungeons), and then he picked a favorite. It was a nice to see HYPERBOREA included in such great company! I have watched several of his other videos, and I made sure to subscribe a while ago. If you like what you see, you should subscribe as well!

Good review. Dark Dungeons is a retroclone of the D&D Rules Cyclopedia and an excellent book. I highly recommend it.

I like the sheet but I use LibreOffice. The Excel one looks a lot prettier, any way to just get a blank PDF of it to roll my own?

For the PDF that I am cobbling together, the "Ready Reference Sheets" for AS&SH, I'm now zeroing in on the following tables, which is overkill for a Ref Screen, but it gives you an idea of what I have nailed down as helpful and essential info for referees to have at their disposal.

READY REFERENCE SHEETS

  • Table 43: Unskilled Weapon Attack Penalty
  • Table 44: Attack Rate / Rate of Fire
  • Table 45: Monetary Exchange
  • Table 62: Armoured Sorcery
  • Table 77: Light Sources
  • Table 78: d6 Task Resolution
  • Table 80: Overland Travel
  • Table 81: Terrain Effects on Movement

  • Table 83: Course Deviation (Overland)
  • Table 85: Reaction
  • Table 86: Combat Matrix
  • Table 87: Attack Roll Modifiers

Thanks Jeffery.  I'll be doing this for a 4x6" 6-panel screen but this gives me a good place to start.

Hey guys, I just ordered me a Hammerdog 6-panel mini screen.  I want to put in pertinent ASSH tables so I thought I'd ask folks here: which tables would you use for a GM screen, no matter what size or how many panels?

Smokestack, did you pull the Hyperborea font from one of the PDF's? I have to imagine that's a custom font. I'd love to be able to put it on the front of mine.

Actually, that font/header I pulled from this very forum.  I found Jeff's thread where he shows the new header and used that.  I want to do a color version now.  I'll post pics when I do.

General Discussion » First AS&SH Game Saturday - Highlight » 2/19/2017 11:17 pm

One small highlight from our very first AS&SH game last Saturday - playing Rats in The Walls, the PCs were in the basement of the tavern and discovered the secret trap door. They looked at it, Eric's barbarian grabbed the edge and with a loud roar did our first Extraordinary Feat of Strength LIKE A BOSS! Flipped that heavy flagstone like a tiddly-wink! Applause all around.

Rules Discussion » Ascending AC » 1/22/2017 11:28 am

My two coppers,

I've recently threw off my rose-colored glasses and made my peace with Ascending AC, as it IS faster.  BUT, I still complain about it out of laziness.  All this 30+ years of classic modules and I have to go through them and convert the AC on all the NPCs and critters?  Too much work.

I'll second this.  The screenshots look gorgeous but, as the person above, I run OpenOffice.  Any chance on a version for that?  I know Oo has an issue with MS Office macros...
