I thought we might have fun with a Hyperborea trivia thread. Everyone's probably seen this concept on other forums, but the basic procedure is that I'll ask the initial question, then whoever answers correctly gets to ask the next question and so on. Anything pertaining to AS&SH, including rules, setting, art, modules or even influences, is fair game, but if it's a module question, be sure to use the spoiler tag.

First question: Of the 22 Hyperborean deities lised in the Referees Manual, only three are deities of Law - who are they?

I don't even have to look that one up: Apollo, Artemis, and (the odd one) Yig.

Ha! No need to stump anyone out of the gate. You're up!

It's also interesting to note that there are no good deities and only one evil deity. They're all pretty much chaotic or neutral.

Apollo - Law
Artemis - Law
Aurorus - Chaos
Azathoth - Chaos
Boreas - Chaos
Helios - Neutrality
Kraken - Chaos
Krimmr - Chaos
Kthulhu - Chaos
Lunaqqua - Neutrality
Mordezzan - Neutrality
Rel - Neutrality
Thaumagorga - Evil
Tlak-Nakka - Neutrality
Ullr - Chaos
Xathoqqua - Chaos
Yig - Law
Yikkorth - Neutrality
Ymir - Chaos
Yoon'Deh - Neutrality
Ythaqqa - Neutrality
Yug - Chaos

Hyperborean hydras all exhibit a particular oddity when compared to their AD&D brethren.  What is that oddity?

They have an odd number of heads (5, 7, or 9).  Also, the heads simply regenerate, they don't grow 2 more from the stump.

Invariably odd number of heads was indeed the "oddity" I was talking about.
Your turn!

12, right? The matrix only goes up to 12 I think.

Right.  12 is the MAX FA, period.

You're up.

I'm only a first level character, but in combat, many animals fear me, and every round I have a good chance of bringing down any human who opposes me. What's my deal?

You are a Huntsman, and all animals should fear you. With your lasso and net you are quite skilled at bringing down your foes.

Well, maybe . . . but I haven't read the Huntsman yet (hint, Jeff). So, no I'm looking for something from the Players Manual itself.

You are wielding a two-handed sword/scimitar with an 18 strength and inflict a minimum of 6 points per hit - enough to kill most small animals and 0-level humans.

Nope! I didn't say "kill." Killing is for those with something to prove. I said "take down"--that's a hint. Also, there's nothing necessarily extraordinary about my ability scores. That's a hint. I'm a reasonable guy (Hyperboreanly). Nothing extraordinary is going on.

Exactly! I'm a first-level fighter with weapon mastery in the whip. Animals fear me! Men want to be me! Or at least make an STR roll to escape me!

("Mostly ineffective versus armoured opponents, but its report can cause certain animals to flee (see VOL. III, COMBAT, morale). A skilled wielder can use this weapon to entangle a Medium or smaller opponent, if such an attempt is declared in advance. The “to hit” roll must exceed the required score by 5 or more; a whip master, however (see WEAPON SKILL, weapon mastery), need only beat the opponent’s AC by 2. An entangled foe is prone.)"

Nice triumphant return, Ynas Midgard! Your turn to create a question.

Loving the thread. I was stumped by the whip, and I wrote this dumb game! ;)

Everyone has something to prove in Hyperborea, my friend.
Nice question!  I was actually going to guess "sleep spell" next.
