I saw that the other day and hadn't gotten around to listening to it.

Guess I'll bump it up.

What? Me worry?

The new Metallica album is sounding pretty good so far ... as part of their return to form, I present to you 'Dream No More' ... video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqIQvE5R1tU ... lyrics below... That's right, they're singing about Cthulhu again! Right On Fellas!

DREAM NO MORE Written by Hetfield/Ulrich

He sleeps under black seas waiting
Lies dreaming in death
He sleeps under cosmos shaking
Stars granting his breath

He wakes as the world dies screaming
All horrors arrive
He wakes giving earth its bleeding
Pure madness alive

And He haunts you
And He binds your soul
And He loathes you
And reclaims it all

You turn to stone
Can’t look away
You turn to stone
Madness, they say

Cthulhu, awaken

He sways in abyss returning
Inhaling black skies
He shakes with a torture burning
All lost in his eyes

And He haunts you
And He binds your soul
And He loathes you
And reclaims it all

You turn to stone
Can’t look away
You turn to stone
Madness, they say

Cthulhu, awaken

You turn to stone
Can’t look away
You turn to stone
Madness, they say

Sanity taken
Seething damnation
Cthulhu, awaken
(Wake) Winged salvation
Death by creation
Cthulhu, awaken
(Wake) Dreaming no more

Cthulhu, awaken
(Wake) Dreaming no more
Cthulhu, awaken
(Wake) Dreaming no more

OK, that just sold me. I'm heading to Bull Moose tomorrow, if not tonight. Glorious.

I always loved these guys from New Jersey, Ripping Corpse. Their music was definitely fantasy/horror inspired. This one, Anti-God is all about Cthulu as you can see from the lyrics:

Deeper, deeper in the woods they're found
Chanting, chanting Cthulu cometh now
Sacrifice, sacrifice, give it flesh they sing
Calling, calling the lord blasphemy

The old one, great old one
It is nightmare itself
Waiting in slumber
Deep in the earth it dwells
Steaming, oozing stench of one thousand graves
Sleeping, dreaming in the corpse city of Ry'leh

Cthulu, dread Cthulu
It darkens the sun
The ancient, the anti god
Lord of the unholy ones

Howling, baying like animals in heat
Living dying by the master's decree
Teaching it's vulgarities even as they sleep
Awaiting the chaos when the master leaves the deep

Deeper, deeper in the woods they're found
Chanting, chanting Cthulu cometh now
Sacrifice, sacrifice, give it flesh they sing
Calling, calling the lordly blasphemy
Hear them calling blasphemy

This one is not exactly gaming related but it is a inspirational nod to the movie Hell Raiser:

Skeletal hand of a desperate man
Lays a bludgeon upside your head
He wants your flesh and he wants it fresh
That's why he will wait you till you're dead
He wants your essence, it gives him presence
Puts meat on his bones
No more languishing, forever in anguish
Frank is coming come

Hellraiser
Hellraiser

In search of the threshold of pleasure
Obtained by sadistic measure
Lament configuration
Bliss through disfiguration
Malevolent priests inflicting agony
Ecstasy through misery

Mauled, ripped and torn
Pleasure and pain come as one
Mauled, ripped and torn
Pleasure and pain come as one

Severe mutilation brings joy
Using bleeding torturous toys
First they will dissect you
Innocent blood then resurrect you
Vicious circle never end
Finding pleasure though pain again, again

If you like that album, a couple of the members of that band (including the singer) went on to form another band called Dim Mak which had very eastern-martial arts-themed music. Pretty good stuff. Intercepting Fist was their first album and one of the best.

I can't get enough of this album!

Ripping Corpse - Glorious Depravity

There's a house on a bleak New England lane
Standing in contempt of our disdain
Hidden beneath its aged floors
Lies a best forgotten door
That leads to

Decrepit steps, wretched depths
Deep horrors left unquestioned
Perverted forms in gleeful scorn
Of things human and reverential
Reptilian skins writhe in sin
Forsake humanity for bestiality
Sickening shapes, aberrations
Intensified by generations

Tongues flagellating, bodies undulating
In an orgy of glorious depravity
Perversions slithering, morals withering
In an orgy of glorious depravity

There's a house on a bleak New England lane
Standing in contempt of our disdain
Hidden beneath its aged floors
Lies a best well forgotten door

Ripping Corpse - Beyond Humanity

Are you sane Crawford Tillingast?
Bow you've seen it, how long can your sanity last?
Don't go back in the house on Benevolent Street
Defy the urge no mater how it entreats
Deny the lust and greed to see
It's usurping your will and humanity
The pineal is no means to sanctity
Just a catalyst for the corrupting entity

Omnivorous, it feeds on minds deceased
Great knowledge, yet such perversity
The evil that lurks in all men's minds
You must defy it, strike it blind

Uncovering latent vision
Pretorious sounght to find nirvana
Absorbed in gratification, climaxed in decapitation
Festering withing the maw, digested by the hungry obscenity
United and debased with the voracious mutated amalgamation

Awash in a sick sensation, ravaged, debauched, not emancipated
Sapient abomination, sucking in the covetous myrmidon
Swollen, satiated, glutted from metempsychosis
Devouring without prejudice, engulfing, consuming, incorporating
Because humans are such easy prey

Defy it, save yourself
Survive
Defy it, save yourself
Survive

Beyond humanity

ok, my turn.
old school, traditional heavy metal fan here - new to the forums (I'll take time to introduce myself elsewhere later) - but well versed in the style of inspirational music being presented in this thread. I'll start with the quintessential theme song written by gamers for gamers. This band is from Salt Lake City, signed to Metal Blade Records, and are the real deal. I present to you VISIGOTH and their track 'Dungeon Master'. Be sure to check the lyrics for Easter eggs.

https://visigoth.bandcamp.com/

enjoy. \m/

next is a traditional metal band from Austin, TX named ETERNAL CHAMPION.

Just press PLAY... https://eternalchampion.bandcamp.com/

and if this isn't HYPERBOREAN themed music, I don't know what is.

more traditional metal from Massachusetts with OLYPHANT. The album title alone of course drew me in on this one...

can't get much more old school than S3. \m/

and from Pennsylvania we have SUMERLANDS with a similar 70's/80's guitar driven heavy metal and haunting melodies as the above bands.

I'll leave you to digest these bands, then I'll return soon with more inspirational metal. \m/

do you like heavy metal? do you like Thundarr the Barbarian? The Secret of NIMH? World War Z (the book, not the stupid movie)? DUNE? Game of Thrones? the works of Fritz Leiber? ...

then you should like MEGA COLOSSUS!! http://www.meltedfaces.com/

go to their music section and their latest album 'HYPERGLAIVE', click 'Sunsword', and enjoy a return to Saturday Morning Cartoons. \m/ Bowl of cereal not included.

note: their current background image at the top of the page was taken when I hosted them at a venue in Marietta, GA in 2015. HUZZAH!!

Wow, thanks for all of the suggestions, Hoyt! Can't wait to check some of these out.

BURNING SHADOWS, traditional heavy metal with a power metal flair based out of Maryland (but you'd swear they were from Europe). Swords, Sorcery, historical adventures on the high seas, Skyrim, cosmic horror... it's all right here...

https://burningshadows.bandcamp.com/album/truth-in-legend

Truth In Legend = Dragonborn/Skyrim
From the Stars = Lovecraft

But the entire album is great! And check out their previous release 'Gather, Darkness!', which tells the story of a dark dystopian future. \m/

SCYTHIA, progressive power metal from the great white north. I've had the pleasure of working with this band twice already, and look forward to many more great shows and releases from them. This is the song that they had just released when I discovered them. Such good gaming music:

and here's their Bandcamp, because I know once you experience the 'Bear Claw Tavern' (from the "...Of Conquest" album), you'll want to invest in this amazing band: https://scythia.bandcamp.com/

You are speaking my language, blackmote! This is epic, and I'd never heard of them before. Looks like it's their second record. Nice find!

Guitar player reminds me a lot of Vivian Campbell. Good stuff.
