Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Let's restart trivia after taking a break over the summer. Who wants to go first?

Blackadder23: Insanely long villain soliloquy, then "Your action?"

Which standard weapons ignore AC bonuses from shields?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Off the top of my head:  Members of the flail familiy and the hooked throwing knife (including the king of all weapons the Glaive)?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Well, I think you get it, Eli. It's the flails and the HTK. Sadly, rather than a glaive, AS&SH has the following bone-chilling warning:

"For gaming purposes, the halberd as a weapon category subsumes other pole-arms and pole-axes, including bills, fauchards, glaives, and guisarmes. If the campaign calls for an alternative pole-arm type, simply use halberd statistics; however, some pole-arms are more pike- or spear-like, so referee discretion is advised."

Emphasis added. Emphasis added FOREVER!!!!

You're up!

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

I think he's referring to "The Glaive" as a type of "hooked throwing knife" (a la the movie Krull).

Unacceptable! Don't make me add more emphasis, people.

Exactly! (see page 87 of volume 1 and definitely see "Krull")

Ok here's my question:  There are 4 types of non-human hominids resident in Hyperborea and all of them seem to collect shiny rocks.  If you were to rob their lairs of all treasure which one would potentially yield the most gems?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

I could only quickly come up with 3: Bird-man, Crab-men, and Fish-men. Of those Crab-men have Qx10 so I say steal their shiny rock collection.

Edit: How could I forget snake-men? But they suck at collecting rocks (6d6, 40%).

Also, to add some math into this answer.

Q : 1d4+1 (50%) -> 2.5+1 (50%) -> 3.5 (50%) -> 1.75 gems on average
A: 6d6 (40%) -> 6*3.5 (40%) -> 21 (40%) -> 10.5 gems on average

The x10 multiplier for crabmen gives them 17.5 gems on average. Assuming you go along with my crappy assumptions and such.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Are those hominids? I would think ape-men, vhurrmis, and . . . ape-men superior? carnivorous apes? oon? orcs? would be the hominids. If an effin' bird-man tries to claim coevolution with me, it gets the Glaive!

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Gizomomathboy you are on the right track (also love the fact you showed your work!) but Handy is correct I'm thinking of members of the primate family who's petrified skulls one might concievably find on the shelf of a Natural History museum here on earth and could fit into the famous evolution of man lineup.   By my count this would be Cavemen, Vhurmiss, Mountain Apes and Ape-men.

Not sure how I misread that...now that I look back at it...slow day at work I guess.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Ok, now that I have the correct creature types...Cavemen, Vhurmiss, Mountain Apes and Ape-men

Now, looking at the gems generating portion of the treasure haul...

mountain ape Q 1d4+1(50%), R 4d8 (60%) -> 1.75+18*.6 -> 10.8 -> 12.55
Ape-men C 1d6(30%), Q 1d4+1(50%) (×2) -> 3.5*.3+3.5 = 4.55
cave man C 1d6(30%), Q 1d4+1(50%) (×10) = 1.05 + 17.5 = 18.55
Vuurmis B 2d4(30%) = 5*.3 = 1.5

So, raid the cave men to get 18.55 gems on average.

However, let's see what happens when you throw in the other types that can tag along

Mountain Ape - no leaders types so no extra calculations

Ape-Men - they have an alpha type which is kinda loaded with gems. 1.75 alphas are likely to be encounted. Now they are Qx5 in the lair so that's an extra 5*1.75 = 8.75 gems * 1.75 =  15.3125

cave man - Well, their leader types don't seem to believe in purty rocks

Vuurmis - Well, they don't have leader types as well

However, one last bit of math to attend to, the number of creatures encounted. How does that affect the haul?

Mountain Ape - 1d6 -> 3.5 * 12.55 -> 43.925
Ape Men - 6d6 -> 21 *4.55 + 15.3125 -> 110.8625
Cave Man - 6d6 -> 21 * 18.55 -> 389.55 0_o
Vuurmis - 5d6 -> 17.5 * 1.5 -> 26.25

Holy f***. I guess if you hang out in cave all day or something you have nothing better to do than bang on the walls and collect whatever the f*** falls out. Damn...I wonder what the total worth is on average?

The average value of a gem is: .35×10+.25×50+.25×100+.1×500+.04×1000+.01×5000 = 181gp

So, on average you will get the following values of gems:

Mountain Ape -> 7,950.425gp
Ape Men -> 20,066.1125gp
Cave Man -> 70,508.55gp
Vuurmis -> 4,751.25gp

Some one please tell me my math is wrong...because WOW. Let's go kill us some cave men in their lairs.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Whoa!

I don't know that it's your math that's wrong so much as your reason for doing it. I think you'd need to encounter 21 tribes of cave-men in order to get 21X the number of gems, no? Treasure classes are per lair and assume the full complement of monsters based on the No. Encountered. It's only for those treasure classes that say "individual" that you'd need to multiply by the actual number of monsters.

Now, none of this is to say that I wouldn't happily go into a cave-man lair with you and let the war pick do the talking!

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Totally cool. Late October, veils between the worlds thinning, Mets down 2-0, Lou Grant still canceled--it's a rough time for us all.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

However, that does make me revisit the math.

mountain ape - 12.55 gems [value of 2,271.55gp]
Ape-men 4.55 + 8.75 = 13.3 ( or 19.8625) gems [value of 2,407.3 (or 3,595.1125)gp]
cave man 18.55 gems [value of 3,357.55gp]
Vurrmis 1.5 gems [value of 271.5gp]

So, more reasonable. However, would the alpha ape men's treasure be shared amongst them or for each?

If the alpha treasure is per alpha then the ape men have more gems per encounter, on average. I haven't run the numbers for total hoard value for each type however...although that would be an excuse to make a program...

Although, given how my reading skills are today...maybe doing any coding is a bad idea.

I blame lack of beer...it's been like days since I've had a beer.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Excellent!  I thought at first it was the cavemen but I think you are right about the apemen.  Apparently their leaders sleep in gemstones like Scrooge McDuck.  I am curious about whether lair treasure applies to each Apeman Alpha.  You're up!
