The Game Laboratory - an idea

This would be sort of like a pbp and be done in that forum section here - but with alternating  relatively obscure game systems being run by alternating DMs and it would be even shorter - just rolling up characters and doing one encounter with them

ie. I start and name the game system. I choose M.E.R.P. - everyone generates a character - and then I run an encounter such as the party getting attacked by Hill Trolls in the forest. Everyone rolls their own dice in the encounter using invisible castle http://invisiblecastle.com/ and posting the result link.
When that encounter concludes the next DM is up, he chooses another game system, lets say Sabres & Witchery and everyone creates characters and he runs the next short encounter...

The purpose - a way to try out some game systems you have been meaning to try. If not everyone that wanted to play owned the ruleset named then the person running the game gives them a pre gen

Anyone interested in trying this?

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

I'm totally interested, but I worry that not having the rule set and so getting a pregen would be more common than not. Which is a shame because rolling up a character is a great way to get a feel for a game. E.g., I don't have any MERP stuff, but I'd love to be guided through rolling up a character for it so I can get a sense of how the game is structured.

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

i'm down with it, but we will obviously need either a link to a pdf or a what you need to know explanation of the system.

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

To start this off I could start as 'Lab Tech' running an encounter with Sabres & Witchery.

Available as a free download here http://beyondbeliefgames.webs.com/freestuff.htm

Think Solomon Kane.

It'd be cool to have 3 or 4 players if anyone else is up for this little experiment<?>

Invisible Castle wasn't working, so I used random.org. Not sure what "DC" refers to.

Boris is your typical Russian serf wood chopper who has seen some messed-up stuff and decided that being chained to *that* particular piece of land was not a long-term survival strategy. Hello, world.

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

I have only skimmed the rules but heres my attempt at char gen.

INT * 10 * 1 Lang. (Eng.)
WIS * 13* +1
CON * 7 * -1
DEX * 8 * -1
CHA * 10 *
Class: Hunter
Level: 1
XP: 0
ST: 14
DC:
AC: 11
HP: 4
ENC:
MV: 12
$: 7
Class abilities; Information gathering CHA detect rumours in an Inn), +2 save vs death,Magic, Fear. Smite Evil (one per day) Wis bonus added to attack/+1 dmg. Turn Monster (Wis) similar to clerk ability.

Dupont was disowned by his noble family after attempts to cure his 'insanity' in the asylum failed. He now wanders the lands aimlessly seeking to kill those unseen monsters of the night and gambling away his meagre earnings.

I just rolled dice on my desk. If this is an issue i can start using an electronic system. Also i just picked stuff from the suggested starting list. I have not paid for any of it.

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

Also, I just realized that we should make sure it's cool to roll up chars. for another system on the *Hyperborea* forum. Moderators? Ghul? Xathoqqua?

I'd be surprised (but i would respect it) if Gul takes issue. We can always move it to another forum.

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

I have done some work on my ideas for this game, and have turned into more of a setting/short adventure I am calling
Forêt de vers

It should still be brief, but is more than an individual encounter now. Hopefully we can get the green light soon to proceed here. And if anyone else wants to roll up a character that would be good also. I think you will enjoy it

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

Good news, as I PMed Jeff/Ghul and he green lighted us hosting this game here.

I will open a thread shortly in the pbp area and xfr the characters there. I may bump them up a level or 2 depending on if any more players join.

Weird fantasy/horror adventuring in the style of Solomon Kane - join in

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

Greetings

The 1st game of this has completed. Is anyone else up for running the next micro-adventure pbp in the forums below?
Could be AS&SH, could be Top Secret, could be Stormbringer, could be Humanspace Empires  - could be anything, preferably something that offers a free rules version pdf or rules-lite or no-art version or that everyone interested owned the rules for . Dealer's choice! Just try and make it brief to fit with the theme of this here she-bang.

Handy H, or the Great Lestrade - either of you in my opinion would have first dibs on running since you were players in the 1st go round, or if neither is up for it is anyone else?

I would like to be a player in said game

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

I don't think I have the bandwidth to do so until after GaryCon, at least. I have a few projects going right now and don't want to disappoint! Great Lestrade, you want to grab the reins?

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

New Salem Massachusetts 2417

Terra has been devastated by a Nuclear war started in 2370 primarily between the United Territories of Greater Texas and the Euro-Slavick Metals Corporation. Fallout has caused hideous mutations and a society of warped realities and survival techniques.

Recently the walled City of New Salem from which you hail has been plagued by assault and theft (of odd mettalurgucal components and compounds) coming in from the great sprawling trackless mires to the west.

This would be 'In the Moon Bog' (written by joseph) played using 3rd level Mutant Future characters. Tasked with investigating the mystery into the swamp and saving their town.

Just gauging interest in running this as a slow paced pbp game here. Anyone have the time or interest? I know summer can be a busy time, thanks

Scaly, summer is definitely busy, but I'm interested if this gets going!

Re: The Game Laboratory - an idea

Ha, yes busy time. This realistically wouldn't get going until Fall, but it would be cool to get some players lined up and roll up characters to have a game ready for later.

My initial thought was to to run this with Mutant Future, but I have run that system quite a few times, and the point of this would be to try out new systems, or systems new to us to actually play. On second thought I would propose to run it using Tombs & Terrors rule system http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/84759/Tombs--Terrors-Fantasy-Role-Playing  (free download). I just picked up a hard copy of it and would like to give it a go
