The wood is old but in far better shape than the first box discovered. Votin eventually climbs inside the box.
[Does he sit in the fore or aft "seat"? Does he put down the torch or the axe to grab the lever?]
[OOC: What I want to say is that he keeps the torch and battleaxe and uses his teeth to move the lever...however]
Votin sits in the 'fore' seat and puts down the battleaxe[right hand] to maneuver the lever...ever so slowly and gently.

Votin sits on the fore seat and moves the lever.
The wheels squeak loudly beneath the cart as it ever so slowly begins to roll into the darkness behind him.
Votin watches several flashes of lightning illuminate outside the cave entrance in front of him...

Votin suddenly realizes he's facing the wrong way!
He slowly pulls the lever hoping to stop the cart and either turns and faces the other way or switches seats, whatever is appropriate.

Pulling the lever stops the motion of the cart. Votin easily moves to the opposite seat.
[And again moves the lever causing the cart to roll again.]
Slowly the cart moves. The slope is very shallow and the cart doesn't pick up much speed. The torchlight flickers against the walls revealing huge timber supports at regular intervals. There is a noticeable cooling of the air as he goes deeper into the cave. After a turn the cave opens into chamber larger than his light illuminates. The cart continues to slowly inch forward.

Votin stops the cart and steps out to examine the area (not moving far from the cart), he makes marks in several places so that he can find his way back.

Votin steps out of the cart with his torch and battleaxe. His footfalls on the stone floor ring out, piercing the enveloping silence. The floor is bare, all he has to mark the stone with is his battleaxe. Before he does this- if he does at all - he circles the cart at a comfortable distance, finding nothing of interest.

Votin uses his dagger to make a passable mark in the stone(maybe?) and satisfied in his search of the immediate area, boards the cart and resumes his journey.
Offline
Votin thinks to make his marks on the stone floor with his dagger.
[In order to pull it though, he'll need to free up a hand. So what and where exactly does he pause his grip on?]
Offline
Votin hangs his battleaxe on his belt and draws his dagger out of its sheath.
Offline
Votin digs the dagger blade into the stone floor.
[Votin roll d12]

As the blade scratches the stone, Votin can clearly make out an earlier cut mere inches away, made much the same way, in the shape of an arrow pointing into the darkness beyond his torchlight's reach.

The hair on Votin's neck stands up, he silently puts his dagger away and grasps his battleaxe.
He stays quiet for a minute listening intently, eyes trying to pierce the darkness.
If nothing happens, he will re-enter the cart and continue his journey ever more cautiously.
Offline
Votin hears some rustling in the darkness in the direction of the arrow, maybe 30 feet ahead.
Offline
Votin freezes in place...he can't see in the dark and with the torch his presence is obvious...
"Show yourself...I can hear you."

There is no response and the noise continues. It's almost rhythmic.

With great trepidation and torch held high Votin slowly advances trying to illuminate the noise before he gets to close. Votion tightens his grasp on his battleaxe.

Votin's torch slowly illuminates the cave wall as he approaches. There is a pile of backpacks next to a burned out fire pit. A rock is holding down a flapping piece of parchment in front of a tunnel leading further to darkness.
Offline
Carefully Votin examines the contents of the backpacks and the piece of parchment.

There are three backpacks. Votin rustles through them with his free hand, quickly identifying the contents.
Bag 1: 2 empty pouches. Well worn tinderbox, nearly empty.
Bag 2: 10' rope, frayed ends.
Bag 3: Prayer book. 4 empty glass vials. blanket with dried blood.
The paper has writing on it, etched with ash: Assume they caught you. others gone deeper for water too long. going to find. It flutters in a cool draft coming from within the tunnel.
