Well, if Kondor is going to try climbing, so will Gundrabu. He will try to affix the crampons to his feet and then carefully begin to ascend the wall.

Although the very tallest of his Esquimeaux tribe at 5'11", Gundrabu alternates between treading dung and clinging to the stone face with his crampons. [ I assumed when he grabbed them from his pack on the slide down, that they remain in his hands.] Getting them onto his feet in this predicament will be tough.

You assumed right. I, too, thought I would use them on my hands. But, since they’re designed for feet (for walking on ice, I assume), I decided it would make more sense *if* I could get them on my feet.
Anyway, Gundrabu failed both tests. 4 for Str, 84 for Dex.

d12: 4!
d20: 15! It's under my strength, so we're good?

4:12 is good for Armored Climb!
Kondor slowly rises out of the muck, searching blindly and desperately for finger and foot holds. But it is like finding needles in haystacks. Up 3 ft. 4ft.... Clinging in the dark...
[the STR test is a d6 roll...please reroll.]

Meanwhile, Gundrabu struggles to get the first crampon attached to his foot, but cannot hang on to the stonewall.
He falls back into the deep dungpit!
[Does he manage to hang onto his crampons during the backsplash?!?! Dex test! ]

d6: 2? Does he get bonuses for high STR or being a barbarian?

If you check the table on pg 10 1e, the bonus is built into the attribute score, Kondor,s 17 Str gives him a str rest of 4:6.
So his 2 is successful.
Kondor climbs the remaining 6 feet and reaches the top of the the vertical climb. The slide beyond feels extremely slick.

Is there any more light here, perhaps coming from the upper area?

There is only darkness.
The only light has been your lantern for a long time.
Even the stars this time of year are dim. And these outside the cave were even blotted out.

“Kondor! Can you lend an Esquimaux a little help down here? Toss me a rope!”

The answer comes as a very distant bone horn bellow!

"Gundrabu! The top here is slick. Too slick to climb. Create some light or something so we can see! I don't think we can get up this way."

“Create light,” mumbles Gundrabu. Then, deciding he is on his own, the Esquimaux paddles on, continuing his search for a way out.

The Kraken chuckles at the vain prayer... and Gundrabu swims away, then hits his left knee hard on something under the muck.
[Gundrabu roll d12.]

A second very distant bone horn blast bellows. Closer.

There is a huge solid object under the surface which seems to have a flat surface.
