There's no metal in the whip, is there? I just picture leather whips knotted as the handle, like Indiana Jones. Do whips in Hyperborea have studs or something?

Gorgon's Lash is wound of Hyperborea's stiffest leathers, and has been wielded by many of its finest tamers to flex with deadly consequence. Its fall is fitted with 3 metal barbs.

Kondor shrugs. “We’ll find the answer below.”
He heads down as described before.

Kondor steps into the stairwell, motioning for Sol and the Ixian to follow behind him, holding the lantern over his head. His sword is tip first, pointed into the stairwell in a way so that anything attacking him will be stabbed easily.

Tetranna hands the lantern back to the barbarian after lighting her own slim taper from under her bearskin and motions to the thief. "Go ahead. I'll take the rear."
The narrow steps are slick under the barbarian's feet. A lichen grows on the chiseled stone. The walls are littered with carved hollows, just enough to force 3 fingers into... The lantern light falls away to darkness below.

Kondor looks into a few of the carved hollows with the lantern light.
"Sol, maybe you should go first, and check for traps?"
Offline
"Affirmative. Hand me the light"

Sol holds the Ixian's slim candle close to one of the chiseled out holes in the stone wall.
Roll d12.

There is something wedged down in the hole.
Offline
It looks like a piece of cork.
Offline
How wide is the whole, does it taper down to an opening with the cork as a plug?
Offline
Sol can easily fit 3 fingers or several thieves tools into the hole. The hole is hand chiseled so not uniform, but not tapered either, however the candle isn't casting the best of light to see inside. The cork looks like it's in about 3 inches or so and doesn't quite fill the hole.

“Hah! I was right!” Kondor whispers.

Tetranna blows out her candle as its wax drips to the stair under her. "If it's going to take a while..." she shrugs.
Offline
“So what do we do? I’m ready to go down, if you can stop the corks and whatever they’re holding in place.”
Offline
The Ixian nods at the thief, "He looks like he's contemplating doing something in that hole, but look..." She motions to the wall. "Holes are everywhere."
The barbarian's lantern indeed shines across a wall pocked with scores of chiseled holes.
"Must mean something. Let's give him a few more minutes to figure something out."
She pokes Sol with the hilt of her hand axe. "What's the deal here, magic thief?
Offline
"Maybe there's something behind it"
Sol will try to wiggle the cork with one of his thieves' tools, making sure to keep his body and head clear of the opening.
ooc: how high up on the wall do these holes go? Could this be some sort of spike trap?

The stairwell within the wall is around 2 and a half feet wide, about 5 feet high and very steep.
The lantern light doesn't reach the bottom.
The holes are on the west wall in a band from waist to chest high, spaced about 10 inches apart and continue down the stairs.
Sol extracts 2 of his precious picks and plucks at the cork wedged within the hole; and upon careful contact with the cork
a sharp tink of glass sounds and Sol pulls out a small clear glass vial containing a clear liquid, stopped with the cork.
