The door ignites, the black smoke wafts into the dark sky.
Malak shivers inside his winter wolf skin waiting.
After a turn, the door burns away leaving 2 metal bars blocking the way inside.

Emral peers through the door, sword ready for anything.

What does the room look like beyond?

The metal bars block your entrance but looking inside:
The room is stone walled as the rest of the church 10 x 20.
Books are stacked on the floor along the walls. There's a mattress on the floor on your right hand side.
There are 2 dead bodies suspended by a thick rope through the broken out hole in the ceiling, one hanging at around 6 ft. and the other above at 12 ft.
The room smells of flowers.

Can I tell how long the bodies have been dead from this distance?i

The bodies are too well covered with heavy furs. The faces too heavily bearded.

How are the bars blocking our way? Like are they an x, a +, or a =?
And what grid space are the bodies and the bed?
And can we reach the nearest books by the door?
Offline
=,
the bodies are hanging five ft directly inside the doorway,
the now burned mattress is to the immediate right of the doorway.
any books that were within reach of the doorway are ash.

Can we squeeze under the bars or do we need to remove them?

The bars are 4 inches wide at chest and knee level.

Easily to bypass

I suggest we poke the bodies to make sure they are dead.
Do we step in?

Emral peeks in, looking this way and that, looking for foes.
If it's clear: "Yes. Cover me with your bow."
If not: Leaps back, sword ready to strike. (etc etc)

Emral pokes his head through the doorway and scans the room.
Nothing stirs.

Emral goes in and looks around.

I will cover him

The bodies are indeed dead, rigid to the touch. Blood has collected in extremities.
They look of foreign complexion and Emral does not recognize their features, but guesses a Pict lineage.
The bodies are tied together by the waists, and covered in heavy pelts.
A sword, a bow and spilled arrows on the floor underneath them.

Emral looks along the length of the room, accounting for the books, doorways, trap doors. Are there rugs or chests? What kind of room was it before the current horrific scene?
“They were Picts, I think. And frozen solid by now. I don’t understand what they are doing here. They aren’t dressed like slaves, but in the furs of free tribesmen. Captured for a sacrifice? Maybe it’s their blood on the stones outside?”

Just to be clear:
"There are 2 dead bodies suspended by a thick rope through the broken out hole in the ceiling, one hanging at around 6 ft. and the other above at 12 ft. "
and
"The bodies are tied together by the waists, and covered in heavy pelts.
A sword, a bow and spilled arrows on the floor underneath them. "

What does “tied together by the waists” mean? Like one is linked to the other by rope? Ceiling then waist then the next waist, all the same rope?
And does that mean that they are horizontal, frozen murdered bodies in a horrific sort of plank? Like a rope ladder with two steps along the ladder, but instead of wood logs they used frozen corpses? That’s kind of like my plan to use the body as a weight to climb up, but next level. I’m guessing an engineer was off his meds but really needed to get to the roof. Unless they were meant to be decorative? Like a gruesome crib mobile or very ugly wind chimes?
I just assumed that they were hanged from the ceiling by two ropes.
I’m going to stop typing and get some sleep, because giggling after a long overnight shift; but I’m very interested in this situation, so please over describe to your hearts content, please, and I will check it very shortly. 👍
