Off the top of my head i would suggest using his environment. If they attack him inside the Inn, perhaps he has secret doors and hallways he can use. In 'Man-eaters of Zamboula', the inn was covered in thick rugs which that innkeeper used to sneak around at night, locking people inside their rooms.
I like giving special characters one or two cool abilities. Maybe Aramis can use an assassination attack. Surely he has body guards, perhaps even some anthropophagi hidden in some basement like compartment he can unleash at the worst possible time (or best depending on your perspective)
Haven't read his stats or anything in a while so maybe some of this is mentioned in the book.
Good luck on the fight! I've yet to get a game going in Xambaala.

Has anyone visited or used this place of myth?
Currently wanting to run a high-level one shot and these islands are intriguing for sure. Two of the people playing are entirely new to ttrpgs, so i want to do an introduction to mechanics with some legendary challenges and monsters.

Electric Wizard is definitely one of my favorites to write to. Or just in general lol. Glad to see them in the very first post!

Awesome! Can't wait to see them. I think I trust your judgement haha.

This is excellent news! One of my friends totally called the name change. I liked to jokingly blurt out the whole name but we all collectively called it Hyperborea anyway.
I see the class art is getting updated, will any of the awesome charcoal art be staying? The Bard in particular might be some of my favorite RPG art.

I ended up getting Eldritch Tales and Silent Legions, both have great stuff inside. Can't wait to use them.
Now I'm thinking I might use this same scenario to lead into a Maze of the Blue Medusa series. Been really wanting to run a proper mega-dungeon.

Nice ideas, guys. I checked out those books and picked up a Silent Legions pdf. It has some real good stuff!
False start is cool too, because instead of simply having them start on a plane which crashes and they play the survivors, I could instead have their group be investigating a a mystery before herding them aboard the doomed plane. In fact, it might be interesting if they start with only one character while investigating, but once they crash I hand them a bunch of random civilians and begin the funnel.
Never ran or played a Call of Cthulhu ttrpg though. Silent Legions seemed almost directly compatible with AS&SH which is nice. I've just got this image of the characters seeing a impossibly massive volcano, surrounded by equally impressive mountains but still ones which pale in comparison to Mount Vhuurmithadon. Definitely like At the Mountains of Madness. Hope to have a Centaur eyeing them from a bluff too, barely visible in the building blizzard.

Hello people. I had an idea for a starting scenario today and have a question or two and some thoughts I'd like to share.
Has anyone tried beginning PCs as modern people? If so, how did you handle this?
I'm considering a 0-level funnel for my group, though none of us have done anything like that before.
My real idea is having all the characters be on a plane heading to Norway or something and get caught in the North Wind, eventually crashing somewhere in the Spiral Mountain Array. Possibly near some ancient Hyperborean ruins. Kinda like the movie ALIVE. But they fight some Vhuurmis.
Anyway, if anyone has done this, I'd love to hear how other people have handled it. Not been entirely sure on the best way to handle a transition to classes, especially magicians, from a modern human perspective.

Got that bundle of holding yesterday and caught a small typo in Forgotten Fane pdf.
Pg. 4 right under the table of contents in the first paragraph on the right side, second line.:
"of Lemurian splendour and tthe wealth"

Gotta talk to somebody about this stuff! Can't discuss too much with the players.
I like the idea of an Unholy paladin. I've been wanting to build a villain around that idea too. Part of his order is actually becoming corrupted, but him being a lowly Apprentice Paladin, he has no idea.
And I would totally allow someone to play an Unholy Avenger. Sounds awesome.

Thread necromancy but oh well
I've approached Paladins a little differently, as I've only had one person interested in playing one and he picked Artemis for worship.
So, for now, there are a few keeps scattered here and there, training Clerics, Priests, and Paladins. For Paladins, I liked the idea of Artemis using them as "hunters". So, inspired by that first Paladin art, Artemis' ideals, and a little bit of Witcher, his character can only gain prominence in the organization by slaying "Monsters". We did a small backstory session, wherein he fought a few ghouls, consecrated a shrine to Apollo, and killed a werewolf with the help of his NPC trainer (RIP Roderick)
He seems very much into it. And at level 2 his current quest is to find a Manticore in the Lug Wasteland. But I'm trying to lure him into all kinds of deadly areas currently. The missing grandson for The Brazen Bull, a poor knave who lost his brothers in the Charnel Crypt... It is both fun and easy to pull him around with morality...

Hello all. They call me shankspeare.
I've quite enjoyed digging through this forum and forums past for helpful tips and tricks so I figured I might as well sign up, lest I send Ghul another rambling e-mail at some point.
Man, I love this ruleset. Can't say it enough. After buying the player's manual in September, I finally got to run some real games this year and my friends had a blast.
My favorite moment thus far was during 'Rats in the Walls' when one party attacked the Gnagana in her nest, cornering her. My paladin acted last, missing her swing and due to the excellent initiative system, I was able to describe the Gnagana swiping away the sword and counter-attacking. I loved it, the players loved it, the Gnagana loved it!
Now I'm setting up seeds for these awesome adventures you guys have produced. I especially love how you're breathing new life into those old, but still awesome pulp stories. Beneath the Comet is going to be very fun.
Best Regards
