From the Players' Manual:

Trauma Survival: The likelihood of surviving a system transformation of shocking degree, such as paralysis or petrifaction. It also represents the chance one has of being resurrected from death.

So, what else can cause a Trauma Check?

Aging?
Polymorph?
Level Drain?
Eating gas station sushi?

Polymorph other, yes, but not polymorph self. Gas station sushi? Anyone ever watch the program, "Monsters Inside Me"? Frightening. Reality trumps fiction every time.

The text mentions "paralysis" in both 1E and 2E of Hyperborea. Does that mean that after the fiendishly long-lasting paralysis of a ghoul's touch ends, the poor victim also has to roll a trauma survival check to go on with their miserable adventurer life?

(I just realised it still hasn't been clarified - not for me at least. So far I haven't asked for Trauma Survival rolls for ghoul paralysis, but that's because I didn't want to be extra harsh.)

This is one of the slight tweaks we made in the Second Edition Players’ Manual:

Trauma Survival: The likelihood of surviving a system transformation of shocking degree, such as petrifaction or polymorph. It also represents the chance one has to be successfully resurrected from death.

Requiring a trauma survival check for paralysis was an early development idea that never was properly articulated. (As usual, blame the editor.) Whilst reviewing the PM manuscript, we took the opportunity to clarify exactly which effects require a trauma survival check:
• deliberate ageing
• resurrection (including brink of death and delay poison)
gelatinize bones
• reversing petrifaction, polymorph other, or transfer youthfulness
• curing russet mould infection
• impalement by backbiter spear
boots of speed
