There's so much good metal that can support the genre that I'm not sure where to start, but these immediately sprang to mind. When I'm preparing for a game, I almost always listen to music and it's almost always metal.

Metallica's creepy instrumental, Call of Ktulu.

Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be, inspired by The Shadow Over Innsmouth

Electric Wizard's Dunwich. No explanation necessary here, heh.

Electric Wizard's Barbarian, clearly referencing REH.

Electric Wizard's Funeralopolis always makes me think of the Zothique stories, especially The Empire of the Necromancers, even though it's really about nuclear war.

You know, Electric Wizard keeps popping up on my youtube sidebar, them telling me if you are listening to x, you are probable going to enjoy y. Sometimes they have me pegged; other times they don't understand me at all. ;) Now I'm going to have to give this a good listening!

Cool. I would recommend starting with Dopethrone. I think it's probably Electric Wizard's best known album, but I could be wrong.

High on Fire's Frost Hammer is also a good one - mentions Plateau of Leng.

This isn't Metal, but it reflects a lot of the kind of weirdness I like to see in my campaign.

Heavy Metal's metal in my book.

Thought of another good one: The Sword's The Frost-Giant's Daughter

One that "You may also like" brought to me was "Huntress"

I am mostly into folk metal bands, so I naturally listen to those bands - with lyrics in non-English Germanic languages - to get in the right mood. I especially recommend the following:

[broken link removed]

Okay, the last one's not Germanic, but you get the idea. Also, when I want to emphasise weirdness and surreality, my goto band is UneXpecT. Here's two of my favourites by them:

Here is a band that's been inspiring me of late. It's like Sabbath and Tull combined, including an enchanting young woman who looks like the Devil's Daughter. She sings, plays keyboards, and flute:

I'm too lazy to post a link. Judas Priest - Nostradamus. Its basically a heavy metal opera.

Dude... DUDE.  THIS song.  It's by a band you might not have heard of, unless you played an older video game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky.

It's... moody, exotic, and swings from a haunting 'Get You Ready For It' melodic lull to a 'Metal-Thrashing-Mad' mosh-inspiring speed.  Seriously, check this song out; but please don't send me the doctor bill if you injure yourself in your fevered gyrations!

When I listen to this and think of AS&SH, I think of a party cresting a savanna-covered hill overlooking a small Ixian town or city in the distance; thereby encountering those people in they're strangely exotic home environment for the first time.

Nice! I am a huge Misfits fan, much to no one's surprise.

Whoa, whoa. Wait. Are there people who *aren't* huge Misfits fans? Are these "people" somehow already dead. No, that makes no sense. Zombies love the Misfits. (Thus it is written.)

I'm glad your digging it, bro... It's got a pretty awesome groove in my opinion for metal.

I know it's probably a mild turn-off to hear that it's from a video game, but those firelake dudes (well, some of them in the band), actually helped produce the game.  Can't remember the name of their company offhand, but I thought that was cool that they coded or did graphical work or something.  And, the fricken music rocks socks, bro!  Might do a search for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Firelake on youtube for more of their music.  Some of the lyrics are in the Russian language I believe (or some slavic language... I forget which country they are from).  Good stuff!

Zak over at Playing D&D with Pornstars has done something fun with metal and Demogorgon:

The only NSFW part is the title of the blog.
