Yesterday marked the 78th anniversary of the death of Robert E. Howard. Tonight I plan to hoist a beer or two in honor of the man.

In his suicide note, he wrote the following:

"All fled, all done, so lift me on the pyre;
The feast is over and the lamps expire."

"He was a man," said Conan. "I drink to his shade..."

“Do you try to write like the guys who write for the magazines you write for?” Clyde asked. “Hell, no,” Bob was emphatic about that. “I let them try to write like me.” —Novalyne Price Ellis, One Who Walked Alone

It's amazing to me how much cool stuff he wrote in so few years. He died in his 30's.

Aside from Conan, I am particularly fond of Bran Mak Morn (and Howard ' s other Pict tales) and Solomon Kane. His historical fiction is really well thought out and provides some interesting reading as well.

My favorite non-Conan REH has got to be El Borak.

As far as non-Conan goes, I like a lot of it. SOLOMON KANE is a pretty kickass dark paladin type, EL BORAK is an adventurer in "modern" (e.g. 1930's) day. THere are some detective stories featuring Steve Harrison and some weird west stories that are pretty good. I'm not into boxing stories much, but anything else by REH tends to be fantastic.

Had some Xmas coin so just ordered this http://www.amazon.com/El-Borak-Other-Desert-Adventures/dp/034550545X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1419652944&sr=1-1&keywords=el+borak+howard

Looking forward to checking it out. This publisher/series does a fine job as I have read others. Very faithful to original works and quality printing/binding

Sort of a cool little story. The other day I get an email inquiry from a guy regarding AFS magazine. The guy had recently purchased AS&SH and was interested in AFS zine. Turns out he lives in the same Seattle suburb I do.
We emailed back and forth a few x and I invited him over for a chat and a game. We hung out this eve and played a game of Roma http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16496/roma which I taught to him and he promptly beat me at
He bought AFS 6 from me and turns out he is a huge REH fan and has attended the festival down in Cross Plains TX a few times, He also wrote some Conan stuff for Mongoose which he gave me a copy of and signed. Cool guy and we may hit a wargame or something again in the future. Small world ha ha

Here is a pic of the book he gave me which he contributed to:

This week I'm acutally reading through Howard for the first time. I bought this volume as it has some of the classics like Beyond the Black River, The Man-Eaters of Zamboula, and Red Nails. I have a feeling I'll be trying to find some more in the not-distant future :D

Wow, are you in for a treat, RB. My favorite author of all time! I've been reading his works over and over again for 33 years now. Cheers!
