While Malak takes a turn out in the dark, Emral moves inside the small dome.
Beside the body are 6 empty green bottles.
A spilled inkwell.
A quill.
There is a parchment clutched in the clawed hand.

I am searching the rest of the room outside where I left off

“Nothing personal, I’m just going to make sure you don’t animate and kill me before I read your message. I’m here to end the curse that caused your death, so I’m not expecting you to be upset, but anyway...”
Emral aims the point of his sword at the corpse’s neck and thrusts it in, hopefully not decapitating the body. Then, reaching in to grab the foot with the other hand, pulls the body and his sword closer. He gets a closer look, for pouches, a holy symbol, anything.
“The sword stays in until I finish, but I will lay your body to rest. Think of this as a preparation for your rest; morticians do much worse!”
Emral reads the note after he is certain the writer didn’t put a curse or explosive runes on it!
Ooc: can I get some definite measurements for the room sometime soon, so I can map it accurately? I’m assuming that it’s essentially the same as the kitchen. The secret door is on the east wall or the south? This is fun, btw.

Unfortunately, you cannot see your hand in front of you face - Emral has the lantern inside the dome.

Emral's sword easily slides inside the man's neck's hide. The body crumples forward as he pulls it nearer. Pulling aside the frock reveals nothing.
Emral's repositions the body back upright so as to get the note. The frayed parchment is crushed inside the frozen claw.
While thinking of how to extract it, Emral glances about, the space is an 8ft diameter circle with a domed stone ceiling at 3ft rising only to 4ft at its center.

Are the walls smooth or bricks? And are there any doorways inside (that may likewise have skeletons blocking someone inside from going to another area)? Any writing on the walls or the dome?
Is there a writing kit somewhere? Emral grabs that and anything else.
Then, setting the lamp so Malak and he can see, Emral sets about getting the note from the grasp of the dead man. If it won't come easily, he puts it against the ground and with his heel he rolls the hand to break the hand - without covering the note in goo - so he can pull the note free.

The stone is the same as the rest of the stone of the church, somewhat coarse.
no other doorways or writing.
As mentioned there is a spilled inkwell and a quill.
Malak is not in the room, he is standing out in the cellar in the dark.

Emral pries open the fingers to get the parchment.
There is a golden ring on the dead man's withered finger.

Whats going on down there?
Offline
Looking at the ring after reading the note. Emral would be happy if it was magical... but clearly not a ring of sustenance.

Emral unfolds the crinkled parchment near the lamp revealing the lines in dark ink by shaky hand.
It was so fast she gathered the children and they fell to her breast...We fled in all directions. Their fates I know not...
But here I hide.
Something is come.
I know not which foul beast from below comes but Oh! the wails of the daemon are chaos in mine ears! And though with fingers plugged, it peels out my mind. Oh! curse this Nightfall!
The children scream. They sense me here. I can feel them pushing against the stone. My heart breaks but fear overwhelms me. I am damned. I am disgrace.
This silence is worse than their screams...
I worry to come out.
My candle is faint...soon darkness.

Emral looks at the ring.

The golden ring is set with a fire opal.

Emral looks for any signs of a curse, then puts the ring on.

The inside of the band is etched with a tiny rune.
Offline
Emral inspects the rune before putting on the ring. He is, as we've established, familiar with runes of all kinds - alchemical symbols being part of his sphere of knowledge.
Offline
Emral is quite gifted, but as he is only a 3rd level warlock, he does not know runes of all kinds.
However, the symbol on this ring he is familiar with.

Fire? He puts on the ring!
