Are the boards coated in wax?

Are they laid horizontally or vertically? Are there visible nails or are they fitted together?

Essentially: can we shoulder through a few two-by-fours, or is this better construction?

None of the boards of the floor or walls are waxed. Nor are the ceiling's, so maybe only the topsides of the boards that make up the pool above have had wax applied.

There are strong oaken boards mainly laid as the corners and ash toward the middle where most of the inward bowing is occurring. All boards are to length at 10 ft, each 12-18 inches wide. All nails are crude iron and are inserted into the very edges at an angle as to pierce the neighboring slat.
