Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

This is a Spoiler for Rats in the Wall:
I not have much time for new games, but this game brought back such old memories and is very well done, I could not resist. The Character Classes as more alive than just basic Fighter, Magic-User and Thief roles and the setting is just alive with possibilities.

I actually am a Conan fan, and have my own site which I very busy at with D20 Conan RPG.

I wanted to play-test rules and have some fun in process, so I created half a dozen adventurers, 3d6 place as rolled, no changes bar the 2 for 1 rule and rolled hit points, whew, that was a laugh, still it adds to the game when one of the Characters has 1 hp and is very cautious of how he advances!

Then before I knew it I starting cautious reading the Rats in the Wall scenario, going no further than needed to role-play the Characters. Example, if they in front of a door, I mentally arranged what they would do and stayed with that plan, no matter what I read (attempting to keep it real, of course!).

So, again SPOILER ALERT; Players go no further!

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

I thought it be amusing to add the Characters, before I added the story..

In seeing what they look like, I think you will appreciate their caution! The brackets for their attribute was the original roll and how it was raise or lowered is noted.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

Khromarium:

The adventurers arrive in the City-State of Khromarium in small groups and singularly from their homelands around the world called Hyperborea in the year 578 C Æ (High Summer Waxing), 2nd month on the 2nd week; day of week called 'Earth,' the both moons where half-moons in the sky and the red sun blazed between them. It is the time of High Summer, a time where no darks falls. It is the time of perpetual light.

Three lads from the lands to the north, a forest-hill tribe in the East of Kimmeria had entered the City-State of Khromarium a few days past and had slowly moved their way through the dark towered streets of the north-side to the harbour front where at least there was more light and the air seemed fresher. One was called Bâjûir Mâcc Aodhán a warrior and bold fighter of Krimmr, a Kimmeri-Kelt and clansman to his two friends. Broad of shoulders, average of height and heavy of built. His hair was dark, though his face was freckled and only a stubbled growth covered his chin as he had only seen seventeen years, yet he stood ready to die in glorious battle. His wonder for civilization and the need to enter such a place, confused him, and but for his friend and fellow tribesman Hálumán the Magician who had 'wished to see this place of greatness,' as he called it,  he would not be here, he would still be guarding the cattle in the fir cover hills with his clan. But he could not allow Hálumán to wander here alone and so he set to accompanying him and to keep him safe.

Hálumán was indeed a Magician, and as typical of any Kimmerian of the Steppes should be, this giving him blue-black hair which hung straight beyond his shoulders, a bronzed skin, tall and broad shoulders, though more lean and more inclined to giving less thought to more physical actives and more to concerns with his esoterica workings. His face was shaven, though only a year older than Bâjûir, it was more stubble that he cut off and by no means capable of being compared to the thick beards of his elder folks to the north. Upon his shoulder was a black raven, whom he called 'Hyginos,' and it was his familiar and his friend who he kept very close to him. Hálumán's tribe was more southern and to the east, close to the Keltic lands. His tribe had mixed with the Kelts through the many centuries and created a mixed culture which thrived by herding cattle, tamed aurochs and some small amount of farming. They hide behind solid palisade walls and stabled their horses and created a permanent settlement in which they grew and prospered. The only danger was from Brigand's Bay region, but after harsh fighting through the centuries those from that region chose to stay away. Still Hálumán was not a strong person, he refused to do manual chores and conversed with Men of learning in his village, apart from the magic they taught him, they also taught to navigate by the stars.

Bálârón had guided his two friends through the wilderness, avoiding hunting group or dangerous predators, he also was also capable of creating magic, illusions. Illusion of frightening beasts that scare off potential threats if they had been seen and allowed them to reach Swampgate and join a caravan south to Khromarium. The civilised Men feared them at first, perceiving them as spies from the savages of the north, but Hálumán had convinced them otherwise and explained that they were pilgrim trekking south to marvel in the splendour of their mighty city. Which in truth as actually the truth, but it convinced those merchants and they were allowed to join the caravan south. As for Bálârón, he had distinct weathered bronzed skin which was much like Hálumán, and much like Bâjûir, he was dark of hair, broad shoulder and heavy weighted, though slightly taller than the Kimmeri-Kelt, but much shorter than Hálumán who was near a head taller than he.

Bálârón was surprisingly nimble and keen witted, unlike Bâjûir who was not. He was the same age as Bâjûir and they had been friend since he could remember, even Hálumán was a close friend and comrade, their tribal oaths keeping them loyal to each other, till death.
Bâjûir and Bálârón protected themselves with thick armour riveted in bone and horn and carried wooden shields though Bálârón was of a smaller design. Their weapons varied, Bâjûir carried his battle axe and slung over his back with his pack was a great hammer. Bálârón carried a broad straight dirk and falcata sheathed in shagreen leather. Hálumán carried a staff and a dagger encased in leather hanging from his belt, he also had four darts hidden in a empty brass scrollcase. They stood on the harbour front in awe, for none had ever seen the sea before!

Shárâ the Amazonian arrives by sea from New Amazonia, her long auburn hair pleated in many strands and pulled back into a bun and tied with a dark piece of stripped cloth, helpful when keeping her hair out of her eyes so she could see. The sea voyage had been wild and the wind had blow fierce giving her plenty of time for her thoughts, and though she had yet to see a score years, her thoughts were plentiful and at present her concerns were of her homeland and she more an exile than a true Amazon. Her chaotic beliefs and her worship of a strange god from the mainland that had captured her attention so many years ago 'Krimmr,' they had branded her a heretic in her People's opinion! She and some of her fellows had caused resentment with their beliefs and were forced to worship his worth in secrecy so she had then decided to leave and possibly see this great god ride through the open plains on his way to a fateful battle, she planned never to return to her homeland.  She walks down the boarding plank and took her first step on the main continent of Hyperborea, her donned ringmail jingles as her foot slams down on the solid brick, she quickly balance herself with her spear. Many days at sea had unbalanced her and her legs would need time to adjust. With her pack and large shield slung and her longsword hanging at her hip, she strolls into the busy throng.

Assiminik had worked as a dock worker with his Father, securing the canoes and kayaks as hunters returned from their fishing trips. Later when he had joined a merchant ships crew from Zangerios, he had worked Port Zangerios for a short while before arriving at Erikssgard and watched the ships come in and aiding in the unloading of the varied ships of many nations to make port safely. The Zangeriosans seem to feast and revel with any who wished, though they did have a strange custom with mask donning. But the Vikings were a dower lot, keeping to themselves and refusing to interacted with strangers unless to drink themselves to the floor or trade. Strict laws caused many an execution of a foolish sailors that could not control their own passions. He quickly left the place after three weeks and took a ship to Khromarium. Assiminik was a Esquimaux and a hunter of the cold norths ice wastes and tundra, he was skilled as a ranger and could track and scout the land with some ease. He stood six foot tall and of heavy weight, but was nimble and strong, but he had one flaw, a lack of spirit, his god Kthulhu and induced a sense of self-worthlessness and feeling of inadequacy in his life, but he had broken away from it, though he could not break away from his god, whether through fear or knowing nothing more than what he had been taught by his forefathers. Assiminik's hair was black and short with a fringe that covered his forehead and some facial hair was formed into a moustache and weak beard. His eyes dark brown and his skin a dark swarthy tone. Upon him was furs and leathers of his tribe and in his hand an unstrung long bone bow and in his belt a footman's flail which he had purchased in Port Zangerios. He carries little but his rolled winter blanket, a steel buckler, a roll of cord and his drinking horn and a quiver of twelve steel-tipped arrows. Another harbour, maybe he could get a job unloading ships; once more!

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

The Hyperborean was of average height for his species, six foot; nine inches at last count and he was of a guant and lean built. A youth in his seventh year, his shoulder lengthen golden hair held to his head by a broad bandanna, his pale smooth skin was without a blemish and his bluish-purple eyes dark and keenly observant. He was a Warlock by trade and was from the City-State of Castle Blackmarsh along the eastern coast some three hundred or more miles north-east as the crows fly. The Hyperborean was called Ploikil Graax and his family was noble by caste, they also had holdings in Khromarium, but he had no wish to stay at this place, his reason being that they mostly were concerned with trade and business with far Blackmarsh, he was concerned with other matters.  He had stepped off the Hyperborean merchant ship and disappeared into the crowd with his gear, explaining to the captain that he would take a later ship if needs must back to Blackmarsh. He was clothed in brigandine armour and carried his pack and large shield over his shoulder. At his hip swung a longsword in a shagreen scabbard and also slung was a unstrung shortbow and two quivers of arrows.

Shárâ saw the three lads of the north standing watching the sea, she was curious by the look of their cloth and that they did not belong to the city. She approaches them cautiously and introduces herself as a Cleric of Krimmr. The three were aghast for in truth their god was not worshipped as such and none of their tribe had priests or shamans in his honour, though it was not unheard of. “So, has Krimmr accepted you as his voice upon this land,” asks Hálumán. “He has granted me power, if that is what you ask and in his name,” replies Shárâ. “Indeed a great honour,” said the Magician, “come join us so we may speak further, this indeed is a great thing, perhaps we were meant to meet and join forces?” The four adventurers move along the old stone pier while Hálumán and Shárâ discuss these strange events, the other two listen with Bálârón wondering if fate was intervening as it was only Hálumán that was interested in the wonders of the world, he was more interest in avoiding being part of it. Later while they sauntering through the harbour they met Assiminik. The Esquimaux had been staring at them as they walk by and Bâjûir could not help but ask.. “Is there something I could assist you with friend?” Assiminik just stares back, then said, “ it is such a fine day, yet I find myself alone; may I join your small group in your meanderings?” Taken aback, then with a roaring laugh, Bâjûir said “for sure, if you wish, come join us in our wanderings!”
The tall Hyperborean Ploikil Graax found them, they in their youth and craving adventure was a good sign to him that he had found the right group of spirited folk to plan their future together. As they talk he suggests a tavern and a place to discuss in private from the busy comings and going of the harbour-life, they quickly agree and found a dock-side tavern called the “Silvery Eel,” and stroll in. The place is empty much to their surprise and quickly they find themselves a seat, for they have much to talk about.

Things were not right in this tavern, ill-kept and in much dishevel...
A brief talk to the barkeep Xill Vuntos seals the deal, and the group quickly rouse to explore the tavern. Talks of rats infesting this building was not such a great job for adventurers but the pay was reasonable, a pearled necklace of great worth and a magical shield that radiates a faint glow of light.

Assiminik questions Xill's remaining daughter, this wife and his other daughter had died because from this infestation, Xill's wife going mad and killing herself at the lost of their youngest daughter who had been tore to death in her room. Xill also mentions a Hyperborean who boosted he knew the reason for this disturbance, he said this half looking at Ploikil and then embarrassingly looked away.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

Ploikil, Assiminik and Shárâ went to the harbour where this Hyperborean was, one called Kiloplo Vheez; a first mate of the 'Berg Breaker,' who was overseeing the placement of cargo in ship's hull. Ploikil asks him of the tavern and Kiloplo happily explains his reasons for what he had said to a fellow Hyperborean, and also a fellow Warlock.  So, it was that the tavern was possibly built on the foundation of an auld sorcerer's tower and they should look for a sandstone foundation. Ploikil nods and thanks his kinsman and prepares to walk off. “Be careful in there, who knows what foul magic remains untouched for the last millennia since the Green Death!” States Kiloplo Vheez. Ploikil nods again and thanks the fellow Hyperborean.

The three of Kimmeria explore the tavern, it's kitchen and then move outside to take a quick look at Xill's private residence, which is up a rickety set of stairs on the outside of building. Bâjûir Mâcc Aodhán goes first with Bálârón, and Hálumán last and his raven familiar, 'Hyginos' perches on his shoulder. They enter a long wooden panelled corridor with two doors off it to the left and a window on the right, lighting the area with bright light from the blazing Helios. They did not expect to find any rats, but were not surprised as five blood red coloured giant rat scampered over a stack of crates at the hallway far end. Bâjûir readies his battle axe and large shield to guard himself, but Bálârón, not expecting to much trouble had not readied his crossbow and quickly pulled out his falcata, his wooden buckler strapped to his forearm was ready for use. Hálumán stood at the back his staff ready and casts a magic bolt of searing dark red light, but though it impacted with one of the rats it does not stop the creature from approaching, the Magician curses to himself his knuckles white as he clenches his only weapon  left to him. The giant rats race toward Bâjûir and Bálârón who react with professional astuteness, but their blades fall short as the rats though large are small enough and agile to be difficult to hit. Two of the giant rats attack Bâjûir, one tearing into his extended arm. Bâjûir curses, but luckily the wound is not deep. The other bites at Bálârón, but the nimble mountebank steps out of the way. Bâjûir manages to do a sweeping backhand and smashes one of the rats into the wall, bones crack as the lifeless form falls to the floor.
Hálumán attempts to strike a rat between the others with his staff, but misses drastically, but Bâjûir attacks again and hits, and one more rats dies! The rats squeal at their loses but stays and fights. Bálârón attacks  and kills another rat slashing down with his falcata. The rats ponder their actions, but a savage need to kill controls their instincts and they pounce at their tormentors. The one attacking Bâjûir misses, the other hits Bálârón, and does a horrific wound to the youth's thigh, Bálârón staggers as his leg buckles under him, but he keeps his guard up. Bâjûir tries to protect his friend but his attack misses again.
Wild swings erupt to fend off the two remaining rats while Hálumán manages to strike with his staff between his two comrades  and smash the butt of the weapon into the face of the rat he had struck with his magic, it keels over and dies. Bâjûir quickly finishes the other giant rat and growls in quick heavy breaths at their victory.
Five rats are dead and the three youths retreat outside to contemplate their next act and bind their wounds. The others return for the docks notice the Kimmerians and Hálumán calls them over and explains what had just happened. Assiminik shudders at the tale, he is uncertain of these creatures, most rats just run from Humans and these were as big as dogs and this strange blood hue colour of fur was unnatural. “We go in, and finish the top floor,” grunts Ploikil, and the rest agree, though this time, Bálârón sets his crossbow and Assiminik has his mastered composite bone longbow ready with notched arrow. They search Xill's room and find nothing, but while in Xill's daughters room, Annesta, Assiminik finds a secret compartment under a loose floorboard. The writing disturbs Assiminik even more as he listens to Hálumán read from the passages. “Dæmons!” Hisses the Esquimaux. “We will be careful,” Said Ploikil, “even if some guardian still haunts this ruin, it's minions are only rats, so we should prevail.”

They block the holes in Annesta's room and return to the tavern main, collecting the five rats and after showing Xill their kill, hurl them into the sea. “My spells are useless against rats, I cannot charm them,” hisses Hálumán, “I need to rest and study the correct spells.” “Hmm, yet, do we have the time,” ponders Ploikil. “Lets at least try the cellar,” insists Assiminik, “they are obviously through and inside the walls boring through from somewhere, but by Kthulhu's tentacles, if we can block their rise from below, at least we may enjoy a restful night within this tavern, using the top floor as our base and keeping a guard through our time of rest, and keeping these two safe.” He said gesturing to Xill and his daughter with a wave of his hand. “Good plan,” said Ploikil. They agree and set to the kitchen and forming around the stairwell, the group readied with missiles, with axe, with sword and spear.

The Hyperborean goes down first with Bâjûir following and Bálârón next with his crossbow ready, which he kept secure with a leather strap that he had rapped across his chest and over his shoulder, so that when he let go of it to draw his falcata, it would not drop to the ground and be damaged. The Esquimaux lets Shárâ go by as he uses the top steps to rest on and train his arrow around the chamber while Xill lowered a lit lamp on a length of twine to illuminate the cellar below. Ploikil stops and points with his longsword, “there, something hides.” Behind the debris in south-west wall something moves.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

Shárâ grips her spear ready to cast, Ploikil and Bâjûir move to the side, so not to be in the way of the barrage of missiles and ready, holding their ground. Hálumán, now not able to see much upstairs, draws forth a long dart and readies to move by the Esquimaux once he has shot his arrows.

The giant rats appear from their hiding place and scurry out in splayed fan-like assault, the adventurers cast, but to their dismay fail to hit even one of the rats. One rat goes for Bâjûir and two for Ploikil, while one goes for Bálârón and the last one at Shárâ. Bâjûir strikes first with his battle axe, and successfully kills this rat. Again Ploikil strike first before one of the rats but misses and growls in his shame. One of the rats darts through the Hyperborean's guard and tears into his flesh, the other one misses, but the Warlock is groaning inside at his folly. Shárâ evades the assault upon her person while Bálârón is wounded again and is wavering on his feet. Assiminik cannot get a good shot at the rats, though the one near Shárâ is more exposed. He must take the chance. The arrow rattles of the flagstones inches from the rat, but the shaft shatters and splinters in twain. Hálumán trudges by the Esquimaux and dropping the dart then reaches Shárâ's side and strikes with his staff at the rat, but in futilely he misses! Bâjûir attempts to assist Ploikil, but misses his attack on one of the rat who returns it's attention back to the tall Ploikil with it's fellow rodent. One of the bites hits and the large Hyperborean roaring in rage, near to collapsing.

Shárâ blocks another set of fangs as she draws her longsword, but misses as Bálârón falls from yet another wound from the rat fighting him. Bâjûir and Ploikil swing wildly missing the scuttling rodents who block their way from reaching the rest of the adventurers. Again Hálumán's staff strikes cobble stones. Assiminik rises, drawing his flail as he moves and attempts to assist Shárâ, his attack is still a miss. Hyginos the raven fearing for his master's life swoops down on the rat that was turning on Hálumán from the fallen Bálârón and pecks at it, drawing blood. Bâjûir curses as yet another one of his attacks misses. Ploikil at last has some respite and both rats miss him and luck be with them as his longsword pierces and kills one of the rats followed by Bâjûir who cut his in twain. The tall Hyperborean stomps to aid the others. Only two rats remain and both Shárâ and Hálumán evade the vile fangs of their small foes.

The Amazonian cuts air above the rats head, she unable to call on her god's aid, least he think she be weak, cursing her lack of skill she hunches down to guard her legs with her shield. Hálumán again gets a lucky hit with the butt of his staff, and kills the wounded rat, his raven had peaked at! Assiminik the Esquimaux swings his flail but strikes only flagstone with spark flying. Bâjûir moves in and attacks the sole remaining rat from the rear, but still manages to miss. The giant rat is in a frenzy and keeps fighting, striking at Shárâ, but misses with a frantic screech. Bâjûir attacks quickly and kills the rat from the back.

Shárâ moves quickly to help Bálârón, casting one of her healing spell available on the fallen Kimmerian. Bálârón sits quickly, but seeing the rest close by he relaxes, “I guess we won?”
“Yes,” hisses Assiminik, “but it was a bad win, we were lucky, Kthulhu smiled upon us this day,” speaking as he retrieves his arrow which was not broken.
“I not sure he was smiling Assiminik,” grunts Bâjûir and starts to help Bálârón to his feet.
“I am grievously wounded, I need to rest to regain my vitality!” growls Ploikil.
"I have one more spell left,” said Shárâ, “but even so we are poorly equip for this venture and should rest to recuperate our powers.” She cast her remaining healing spell on the Hyperborean.
Ploikil stretches, “ah, that feels better!” But something inside him stirs and he felt it, he felt quizzy and a slightly nauseas, a feeling that things were not well.
Hálumán spoke, “let us at least attempt to seal this place and block these holes!”

They could hear the rats scurrying behind the sandstone walls that surrounds the chamber. The Esquimaux kept watch from the stairs as the rest set to work, it was then Assiminik notices the central floor's flagstone with a faint reddy-brown stains covering it in places. He moves to it and gave it a solid stamp with his heel of his boot. “This is hollow!” He points at the flagstone and then returns to his place on the stairs. Bálârón moves close and examines the area, watched by some of the others before they turn quickly and continue blocking the gaps. “Look,” says Shárâ who was using the wood the rats were hidden behind to block a gap. It was gold and silver coins in a small pile, glittering in the lamp light Xill had lowered down as they had entered the cellar. Hyginos squawks as it saw the gold glisten...

“Hmm, at last something for our efforts,” sneers Ploikil as Shárâ counts them.
“Fifty-seven gold coins and hundred and two silver coins,” snorts Shárâ.
“We're rich,” scoffs Assiminik as he scans the room, making sure he could move around to train his composite longbow in any direction.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

After they solved the problem of any rat entering the chamber, at least for a few days till they could gnaw their way through again, they take pause to think.
“I do need to prepare for this delve,” insists Hálumán, tucking his fallen dart into his empty scrollcase with the other three he had.
“I agree,” said Shárâ, “ and I think that we do agree it is the best tactic!”
The rest nod assuredly, but there was just one thing the secret door in the floor, Bálârón had attempted to find any traps, but he could not be sure till they attempt to lift the flagstone.
“We should be careful and open it slowly, to be sure there are no wires or old traps still attached to it!” He said sternly.
Assiminik had also watches Hálumán and notices him watching Ploikil and Bálârón keenly, even giving some note to Bâjûir. The Esquimaux as a Man of nature, a Ranger of the wilds, knew what was concerning the Magician.
“We also have another problem,” he speaks cautiously, “I have worked in many docks on my way south along the coastal isles and learned of many of the fears of the creatures we fight!”
Hálumán nods and interject, “indeed Assiminik and I also fear that we maybe in danger, if it has not already occurred and we are succumbing to it menaces!”
Ploikil curses, he had tried to ignore it, “it maybe I am plagued by these creatures, I feel some slight discomfort and disorientation!” The tall golden-haired Hyperborean wavers and slightly staggers, his mind inside his head swirling.
“We must search the city for aid,” said Hálumán urgently, “perhaps we can find a cure,” he looks at his close friends Bâjûir and Bálârón, and though they look concerned, they shock their heads as if acknowledging some unheard question, but Ploikil just shudders and splutters. The disease was starting to irritate him. He growled as they help him upstairs.
Ploikil rests in Xill's room on the floor rapped in his winter blanket.
“We must find an antidote, Assiminik, you are the only one fit,” said Hálumán, “Shárâ and I must rest and relearn lost spells. Bálârón is needing to rest and we need Bâjûir to keep watch. Go find a temple or alchemist shop to see how much it will cost us for any remedy!”
The Esquimaux just nods and as he turns to walk out the door, he says “I will return!” He disappears out the door and down the rickety stairs to the harbour and proceeds to ask a passing sailor the way.

Assiminik curses, back in his home tribe, the local Shaman could cure most things, but this city was infested in greed and selfishness, how could he find another that would help. There was the great Kiloplo Vheez still at large at the harbour, his ship was loaded and he stood silently staring out to sea.
He moves to the dock and hails the Hyperborean and spoke, “we have delved into the depths and for sure the structure is placed upon sandstone blocks, but in our search Ploikil Graax has been biting by rats of immense size and of a strange red hue, more like blood!”
Kiloplo was aghast at the Esquimaux's statement... “I did warm you...!” He replies...
“That you did and I assure you, that Ploikil Graax was grateful for your concern, I only ask a little more of your time on his behalf...,” Assiminik pauses.
“Continue...!” “Do you know of a healer or shaman perhaps within these great city walls who could aid us with curing our ailing comrade?” said the Esquimaux.
“I know this place well, but whether you will find one who cares to help or who you can afford is..!” The Hyperborean pauses and ponders, “there is one,” he thinks, “but owing him might be worse than that letting Ploikil Graax die, come!” He strolls off, shouting at one of the sailor to take charge while he was away and that he would be back in a few hours.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

They rest in the room of Xill, convincing him to shut shop and with his daughter remain with them this night, though the night would never come as Helios the sun never sunk below the horizon and the day was lit in perpetual light.  As they have succoured the holes at present and barracked themselves in Xill's room, which seems to not have suffered any invasion, they believed that though the rats might try to get in, their efforts will be wasted and any damage done will either be replaced by more scrap wood or a spear tip will be trust into a rat's face through the spaces and it be skewered, so the group relaxed a little and set about their business! Hálumán sat reading through the thick volume that was his spell book, aye thick volume, but only 10 pages of a book, ten times it's size was full of written spells. 'Charm person,' he thought, 'but what good was that against rats. sorcerous armour, he had that already cast on him, and it would remain until dispelled, now the only spell he had left to use was magic missile. 'That would do fine!'

Bâjûir patrols the room every now and then listening at the walls, the scratching was loud, but by judging where the rat would be, he give the wall a thud with his fist, causing the beast to scurry off in fright and leaving a smirking Bâjûir to his patrol.

A few hours later Assiminik returns knocking on the outside door and it was opened by Bâjûir. In strolls the Esquimaux with the tall Kiloplo.
“Your in luck,” growls the Hyperborean, “ I took your messenger to one I knew and we have made a deal.” The tall Man looks out of place amongst the youthful group as he strolls to the sleeping form of Ploikil and knelt beside him. The youthful Hyperborean was sweating and shaking violently, “lads and lasses, will they ever learn,” he near whispers, but a short grin appears on the Hyperborean's face and quickly disappears, becoming stern again. “The deal is this he,” he spoke again returning to the important issue, “the one who offers aid demands any arcane or sorcerous lore that maybe found below in the depth beyond the cellar, with some minor consideration to any who also seek such thing,” he glances at Hálumán who had been about to speak his opinion and discreetly remain silent, listening intently, “but the majority is to go with him. Your friend here has kindly inform us that you have found a secret door, this is true of most of these old places, so you many have found something important. So, I if this deal is acceptable will assist in some small manner as the one I speak of will pay me compensation and you only need to accept his terms to gain his help. As I am to speak on his behalf, I am sworn to offer some aid in the matter and to aid my fellow Hyperborean as soon as we come to an agreement and I will stay with you till this matter is resolved and he whom I speak will know if I not return that the deal is set and we can continue on or way as soon as possible. My ship does not leave for a few days as we are still waiting for more cargo to arrive from inland, so what do you say?”
They could not but agree...
“Good, first,” he knelt beside  Ploikil and rough grabs him by the shoulder, shaking him awake while pulling out a small flask, “drink this Ploikil Graax,” he said, “you will feel better in a short while.”

Assiminik found a corner to sit in and starts unrolling his winter blanket so lie upon. The others watches Kiloplo as he rouse, uncertain of his actions.
“I go and explain to my Captain of my absence, he knows me and has no fears of me not returning. And of returning, I go to a better tavern, I will return at morn, I will be watching.” With that he stomps out the room and was gone.
When he left, those awake crowd around the Esquimaux.
“What happened,” asks Hálumán, a question that the others were desperate to ask!
Assiminik stare into no-where, his dark eyes wide, stern and fearful, “we travelled north into the north-side of the city where those twisted towers still stretch high into the sky,” he pauses discerning the right words to say, “thankful we did not walk far into that place, though we passed may living on the streets in tents and make-shift shacks.” The rest silently urges him to speak... “We entered the gates of one of these towers, I was for going back, but Kiloplo just laughed and walked on, I just followed through those dark halls. We enter a great hall reaching upward, near roofless, though I could eventually see far above me, I could also see a great winding staircase rising upward around me, broader that a merchantman's ship in width. Kiloplo called out and his voice echoed through the darkness. I looked around me and I swear I saw many dæmons staring at me from out of the shadows.”
They sat silent, each unsure who to speak first, it was Assiminik that spoke first, “ a voice came echoing back down the tower, bidding us to ascend the stairs, we did and after climbing for what seem forever we arrived at a balcony that held a great black stone door of such a smooth surface, it almost looked like water. Runes I could see on it and around it, some fading and reappearing upon it surface. The Esquimaux shut his eyes tightly, “Kthulhu save us,” he hisses and he continues his story, “the door was slightly ajar and we went in, a place of smoke and lights, glass jars of various different things I could not possible describe or want to. I kept my eyes fixed on Kiloplo and then on another, it was another Hyperborean, but this one was ancient and had a long white beard, it is him that Kiloplo bargained with, though I did not know what they said to one another and they treated me as a dog that was underfoot. “that is that,” hisses Assiminik in contempt, “we have their help and they have saved Ploikil with their cure. I believe Kiloplo carries more on his person, but how many I do not know; I need to sleep!” The Esquimaux settles down and the others slowly step away from him to give him peace.
“Troubling news indeed,” whispers Hálumán... Shárâ nods and Bâjûir slightly grunts, he and Bálârón had been bite by these beasts and had seemingly survived, but he was not sure. “Let tomorrow morn show us what we need to know,” he spoke softly, much to the surprise of the other two.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

The next morning arrives. Bâjûir had woken Assiminik to take next watch then the Ranger had woken Bálârón who was much better and felt fit and good enough for a new day. The light of day had not left Hyperborea, but thick curtain were drawn back to allow the light of the morn to beams through Xill's shuttered window just as the door was knocked on by a heavily fist. “It is time,” spoke Kiloplo as he strolls into the room. Ploikil quickly rouse to greet him. “Welcome Kiloplo Vheez, I am honoured again to met you, though I feared I only imagined dreaming you last night!” “Aye, have no fear, it was not a dream,” he growls, “still let us make haste, I am as keen to see what is on the other side of that door as the rest of you are!” He turns and gave them each an intense stare. They march downstairs leaving Xill and a more cheerful, yet ashen Annesta to secure the room above.

In the lighted cellar, Bâjûir and Bálârón pries the flagstone off the central floor area, it colouration had give away is location, staining the slab above from what was below which was a rusted iron trapdoor with a sturdy pull ring. Bálârón the Legerdemainist and Mountebank examines it... “It is firmly jammed,” he said moving out the way as Kiloplo moves forward, “aid me Ploikil,” and he also gives a nod to Bâjûir to assist. Using Bâjûir's iron pry bar and his rope they set to work, they tied the rope to the bar and looped it through the pull ring, then wedging the bar against the pull ring and making secure the rope, the three could then pull it in a feat of extraordinary strength. They grunt and pull at the rope, the trapdoor seem to hold, refusing to open, then with a loud crack, the trapdoor began to move...

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

The Temple of Aurorus “The Shining One!”

A spiral staircase was revealed, covered in old dusty cobwebs and descended into the darkness below. They stare into the entranceway for awhile, then Bâjûir takes one of the torches and proceeds downwards followed by Ploikil and then Kiloplo... Assiminik follows, an arrow ready, then Shárâ spear in hand, Hálumán and his raven, then Bálârón holding his slung bolted crossbow and another torch, wondering why he did not go first. The stairs twist and spiral down for fifty feet, Bâjûir burning away the cobwebs as he went... They enter into a dark chamber through an archway. Before them, across about twenty feet of paved floor was another set of stairs going downwards. They had arrived in the centre of a large chamber, with four pillars supporting the forty foot high ceiling that the light of their torches did not touch and the chamber's walls dimly illuminated as they slowly circled the central stairwell... “Aurorus 'The Shinning one',” part whispers Ploikil to himself, this was a temple to his god and it was in a pitiful state! “Beware,” hisses Kiloplo. The floor was covered in excrement, obviously from the giant rats.. “They go this way,” retorted Assiminik to Kiloplo warning, pointing towards the set of stairs leading downwards where even more excrement was abundant, a feeling of revulsion at the stench wafting from the dark depths caused Assiminik to step back. On a dais on the opposite side of the chamber to the stairs, Ploikil stare blankly at a twelve foot tall statue of Aurorus carved of greenstone, it's head, that of a three-faced Woman. The dais looked remarkable clean and untouched apart from a thick layer of dust. In the south-west and south-east section of this hundred foot square chamber, dozens of crates not fitting of these surrounding lay strewn. “Careful Ploikil, lets move as a group,” hisses Kiloplo, “no drifting off, lets explore this place one corner at a time.” The group bunch together and slowly move into the south-east corner! Scones are seen riveted into the walls, and Bâjûir places his torch into one of them, Bálârón finds one attached to the stairwell wall, lighting the south-east part of the chamber in bright yellow light sending eerie flicking pattern across the walls. Boxes, crates and casks which Kiloplo recognised as containers for wine from the port of Greely, he gave a brief thought for the place that had become isolate of the last few years.

The group have experience enough to know that the rats could be hiding in the area and tap the boxes to irradiate the creatures which bust forth with frustrated screeches. There are four giant rats which scurry around the feet of the warriors closest to their hidden lair. The adventurers react quickly and flay around them in fervour, but seem to hit fresh air more than the spitting rodents. Bálârón shoots his crossbow with deadly precision and one rat is  hurled against a crate and pinned to what was left of the rotten wooden panelling. Hálumán held himself back, scanning the chamber as Shárâ rushes in and stabs with her spear, thrusting it through the chest of a rearing rat, she hisses through her teeth at her first kill in ferocious joy. Assiminik cannot get a shot at the rats and not willing to shoot an arrow into a crowded fight and as the din of battle echoes through the hall, the cautious Esquimaux scans the temple for more danger. The giant rats fight back though only two remained, but their attacks are in vain as both miss, giving the adventurers time to exhale in some slight contentment that they had not been bitten again. Bâjûir and Kiloplo having evaded the rats attack manoeuvre to swarm the foe, surrounding them, their unrestrained roars joining the rats screeches in echoing through the high-ceiling temple, even Kiloplo joined in the barrage of howls and curses.  Bâjûir attacks and slices through one of the rat, then with a quick sidestep cuts the head of the remaining rat! Bálârón quickly loads his light crossbow as the group waits tense and ready. Ploikil hissed, “listen.” In the quiet eerie darkness of the temple of Aurorus 'The Shinning one', from the other side of the chamber came the sound of scurrying feet. The rats cautiously approach, but eventually they burst from the darkness into the light of their torches. Hálumán casts at magic missile at the first to enter his vision and kill one of the rats Instantly. Assiminik looses his arrow and impales another rodent, who screeches to a halt. Bálârón shots his crossbow, but misses, his bolt ricochets off the stone slab inches from the rat and disappears into the dark. Shárâ lobs her spear, but it only scathed and creature keeps coming. Bâjûir, Ploikil and Kiloplo step forward in front of the missile-users and wait as the remaining four rats keep coming, but the warrior hack upon them. Ploikil slashing downward, kills one... Kiloplo instant kill another, his battle axe making a mess of the rat. The rats hesitate and decide to flee, but not quick enough. Bâjûir attack kills as does Kiloplo's. Silence reins again as the adventurers wait patiently in the torchlight!

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

“Lets keep focused!” Hisses Kiloplo, the rest agree with stern nods. Bálârón his crossbow now reloaded, and Assiminik notches another arrow scan the chamber. The Magician lights another torch from one on the wall closest to him, and they leave the other torches to burn where they are. Even Kiloplo lit a torch gripping his battle axe in one hand, these creatures did not need two hands to be destroyed, but he readied to drop his torch and axe quickly to cast one of his spells, if he had to! They ignored searching the crates for any interesting objects and move to the stairs which go further down into the foul darkness. The stench was almost near nauseas, but they held where they where at the top of the stairs. “A dozen flasks of oil would do the job,” hissed Assiminik... “But, we do not know what treasure we may destroy,” said Hálumán wisely. Assiminik grunts in agreement, “pity!” Bâjûir and the Hyperboreans stood at the top of the steps, Bálârón watching the rear with Shárâ. Bâjûir starts his descend, getting the feeling that the Hyperborean Kiloplo was not willing to take to many chances, even Ploikil who followed a step behind him, then Kiloplo.

Hálumán also joined them, those upstairs had torch light. Shárâ picks up her spear with a feeling of disgust, still scanning the dark. The floor was a mess with the rat's foulness! The stairs go deep and those at the top are forced to follow as Bálârón lights another torch and the three carefully descend. “Prison cells,” hissed Hálumán. “And bones of the dead,” states Ploikil. The floor was littered with skulls and skeletons and many different humanoid species. The central corridor was ten foot wide, so the warriors spread out and moved forward carefully. They check the cells closest to them; their doors corroded and fallen apart through the many centuries, shattered and hanging from their hinges. Inside piles of bones of many creatures lay scattered and in huge piles, but before they could think of a plan, the sound of a mad hysterical Woman laughing came from the far end of the corridor...
“Oh, how divine. Never do my children bring enough blood to keep me sated. Presently, I will drink of your sanguine riches, mortal pigs.” What spoke was a huge, bloated dæmon rat which stepped slowly from the darkness, it's swollen nipples under it's abdomen and from hung hung a ruddy-pink pups, each of onefoot in length.
Kiloplo did not hesitate, he casts a 'Web,' spell down the corridor to entwine the dæmon rat and four of it's rat spawn rushing out the cells to side of it. The dæmon was entwined with in the thick strains, as was three of it's minion, one darting back into the cell it came from, unable to get at the adventurers through the web spun corridor!
“Destroy it,” shouts Kiloplo.
Hálumán cast his magic missile at the dæmon rat doing goodly damage!
Horrified as they were, the youthful adventurers tried to end the larger bloated creature, but how. They could not reach it and their missiles maybe slowed by the web strands.
Assiminik still on the steps could see over his comrades heads, “keep low,” he said to them and those in front crouched down as he aimed an arrow at the stricken beast, hoping it would penetrate the web. The arrow thudded home, sinking deep into it's flesh, giving the other hope, that mundane weapons could harm it!
Bálârón shoots his crossbow and the bolt is near lost in it grotesque body as the thing squeal in frustrated pain and rage!
“Save your spear,” hisses Kiloplo the the Cleric, “ I plan to set fire to this whole corridor in a short while.
Shárâ steps back and does as the Hyperborean told her, this kill would have no mercy and none was expected. Some wondered what would have happened if Kiloplo had not been here to assist them.
The dæmon rat is stuck, bloody and frantically tearing at it bindings attempting to break free, but as it does not do so, it starts pulling more webbing down upon it! On each side of where the adventurers stood, at the two open cells appear a single giant rat. Bâjûir lashes out with his battle axe at one of the blood-red giant rat appearing beside him from a darkened cell, but is swing hit the side of the rotten door frame.
Ploikil at the other side of the corridor beside the other cell door hacked down with his longsword, the blade came down on the another giant rat, the blade splitting it's skull, killing it quickly.
Bâjûir succeeds in blocking the remaining rat as it's fangs were deflect by his shield.
Bâjûir strikes at the giant rat, killing it...; and now with the corridor cleared of the foe, bar the large dæmonic rat and three of it's minions who were still trapped in the web, the adventurers could slight relax, a slight tension leaving their shoulders, though their brows showed tension and Shárâ lower lip quivered.
The adventurers start to sense that this bloated creature would not last another breath.
“Fire many not be necessary, but I will prepare,” states Kiloplo, “finish it!”
Assiminik aims again and released two arrows; both arrows speed into the beast and it squeals in horrified pain and confusion!
For a heartbeat there is a stillness, then suddenly without warning the dæmon rat explodes outwards, blood and entrails cover the webbing and walls and a huge ear-piercing screech could be heard echoing throughout the temple of Auroras, coming as if from in the walls and without. Also the trapped rats died also, not so violently, but they seem to stiffen, then expire with a slow release of air!
The adventurers stand unmoving for short while, as if waiting for the next engulfing horror to appear, but none seem to come!

“Is that it,” asked the Esquimaux.
“If I knew that,” spat Kiloplo, “I would be a better Warlock, but for the now, it does look dead. We should retreat, we can come back here with a cleaning crew to clear this mess, if necessary.”
The rest had to agree with such a reasonable plan...
Back up the stairs there still was the north side of the temple to explore and none relaxed their guard....
Huge worn velvet curtains, rotten and mouldy covered the walls. They seem to be pulled off the railing they hung from it's ceiling securing bolts.
It does not take them long to cut a path through one to the left of the alter, but only a wall was revealed and the main chamber filled with a layer of thick dust, cause many to cough.
Kiloplo ponders “this is a temple, they will be for sure hidden chambers to find, keep looking until you find something.”
“Here is something,” calls Bálârón after a short while...
Indeed it was a secret door, but to where, they made ready, missile-users standing twenty foot from the door and warriors on each side, ready to rush in.
The door open on a pivot in it's centre, Bálârón released the catch and it swivelled open. Each held their breath. What monstrosity was about to be release and leave the chamber towards them, but nothing came!
Again Bâjûir felt he should take the lead, or they would stand here for eternity, he moves forward and looks in. A perfectly clean bedchamber with velvet curtains dyed a maroon colour hung on the east and west walls.
“Looks safe,” said Bâjûir....
Slowly the rest of the group moved forward and peered within...
“Such beauty,” said Hálumán is sincere surprise.
“Yes, beauty and mass destruction can go hand in hand with vileness and cruelty,” hissed Kiloplo, “just be careful!”

They entered slowly, unsure of what they would find...

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

They saw a bookshelves with leather bound prayer books and a cedar box upon it.

“There maybe more secret doors,” encouraged Hálumán...

“Aye,” said Assiminik, “true, we seemed to have found a room fit for our sponsor, but what is in that box?”
Bálârón moves closer to the bookshelves, but before he got there, the curtains threw apart and out stepped tall shrouded shapes, donned in helms with red horsehair plumaged flowing. Their weapon were long rusted halberds, though one on the weapons looked remarkable clean and well presented. But, even with this, it was not just the surprise of their appearance, it was that no flesh or muscles hung from their bones, the moving Humanoid shapes were nothing more than skeletons; moving to attack the adventurers a evil red glint glowing in their eye sockets. Bálârón is at the far end of the small room surrounded and trapped! “Beware,” shout Assiminik, starling the group for out of their shocked trance!
Shárâ just in front or the door to the room raises her spear and calls on the power of Krimmr and screams “begone foul creatures!” But, her evocation does nothing but to turn the heads of the closest to her position!
Hálumán standing at the door casts his magic missile at the closet skeleton, but the damage is minimum. Assiminik drops his bow and pulls out his footman's flail and swings at the one hit by the Magician's spell; but the swing misses and goes wide.
Bâjûir roaring his rage and drops his battle axe and shield pulling forth his great hammer and rushes forward to aid Bálârón; he hits the back of a skeleton warrior; his mighty hit shatters the skeleton and it crumbles to the floor with a rattle.
Skeleton turn and strikes first at Ploikil who approaches it, but misses the tall Hyperborean. So, he attacks back, at the damaged skeleton using his longsword; it was a mighty hack and again another skeleton came crashing to the floor.

Bálârón at present surrounded goes into a full guarded stance and he lets go of his crossbow which is carefully tied around his shoulders by twine and does not drop to the floor and draws his falcata, he retreats into the corner attempting to at least put distance between him and the two skeletons on the far side of room.
Kiloplo stomps to the right side, he knew he fights the skeletons of his own People, but he knows they are unknown of his origins and he feels no remorse destroying them! But the Skeleton gets to strike first at Kiloplo, the halberd blade cutting deep through his armour into flesh, a brutal wound! Kiloplo roars as he attacks back and near fumbles his attack, luckily remain on balance “by the gods,” he screams. Three Skeletons remain one attacking Bálârón, and another attacking Bâjûir; the other was still pulling his halberd free of Kiloplo armour.. The both Skeleton miss the fortunate adventurers, but the battle is not finished yet and they knew it. Bâjûir attack his foe, but frantically miss, his desperate need to save his friends life etched into his face! Ploikil moves closer to attack range as Shárâ holding by the door stunned at her own failure. Assiminik; considers he has done his bit in this fight and retrieves his bow...
But again Bâjûir misses his attack! But swings again instantly destroying the animation.
Kiloplo attacks and hits also, his battle axe in two hands and smashes the skeleton to the floor. Ploikil moves attacking the rear of the remaining Skeleton, but misses.
Bálârón tries a back hand attack with his shield, but the forces is weak and the Mountebank grits his teeth and waits.
Assiminik seeing the trouble rushes in; so the skeleton's skull is shattered by the Esquimaux's footman's flail and the skeleton comes crumble to the ground at the feet or a relieved Bálârón, the red light fading for the remains of the skull's sockets!
“My thanks Assiminik!” Said Bálârón.
“Such is the will of the Great Kthulhu,” retorts Assiminik and he stares at the floor and turns and walks away, retrieving his bow again.
“Looks safe?” questions Bálârón of Bâjûir.
“Looked safe at the time,” grinned his friend...

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

The silver halberd was retrieve plus the box, which held flasks on strange liquid, which Hálumán stored safely in his pack.
“He who I speak for does not require any trinkets, the books of course are what he requires,” said Kiloplo, “lets make sure there are no more surprises in this room, search for any more secret doors, then if none, leave his room and seal it, lets us keep it magic secure!”

Kiloplo had his wound bound, “keep your spells Cleric for the others,” growled Kiloplo, “if I need you, I know where you will be!”
Shárâ nodded, it was a good plan, she wondered if Kiloplo was as good as he spoke or just practical!
Hálumán did get a look at the books as they searched, 'religious fervour,' he grins, 'nothing to do with me!' The Magician was just glad he was not losing out on important work.
They found nothing more within the small chamber except purple velvet robes clustered in fine gems, Ploikil asks if they be left untouched and they leave the chamber, closing it door tightly after them.
They then proceed in tearing down the remaining curtains and bundling the remains into a free corner and continued with their search of the north-west walls.
The temple seemed free, no sound apart from their movements occurred, no packs of rats, no scurrying sounds or squeaks, “it seemed in destroying the dæmon rat, they rest have fled or died like those with it in the corridor?” said Kiloplo.
“Aye,” said Hálumán, “but where did it come from?”
The Hyperborean had to agree with the sub-human, but where did it come from, probably the alter of that she-god Aurorus; a entity of evil, he a Man of the balance, nature was repealed by such things, but in this life; even dæmons were part of natural forces!

Assiminik feeling brave rummage through the crates and found a small hoard of coins, but his biggest surprise was beyond his dreams, he lift and held before him a statue of the Great Kthulhu.
“This is why I was summon south, to rescue this sacred idol from this devil-haunted tomb,” he pressed the statue to his chest and hugged it close, “praise be to the Great Kthulhu,” he whispered!
Bâjûir had been close by and could not but hear the the Esquimaux's babbling, but the Man had saved his friend and was reliable in his own way, let him have his dreams!

He mention this to Hálumán and Shárâ as the rest searched the walls tapping the stone listening for hollow sounds.
“I let him have his god's image, if it bring him happiness, so be it,” said Hálumán, Shárâ nodded in agreement.
Assiminik placed the idol on the alter of Aurorus and pored out the coins onto a crate lid from his fur hat he had collected them in. Shárâ set to work and eventually after counting the coins said, “a hundred and twelve gold coins, sixty nine electrum and hundred and nine silver!” It was not much and they started to wonder if they would find any treasure. In this place there held little worth apart from the strange halberd and flask of varied liquids.
They found nothing more in the north-west side of the temple and move to the north-east, knowing if one was going conceal a door it must be at least behind an obstruction, keeping it hidden from view.
They tear down the remaining curtains and halt, a door was indeed there, but still open.

Again it was another secret door, though over time strange things had happen to keep it ajar...., those close by step back, covered in black dust and looking no better than a street tramp, the drew steel and called the others over.
“We were surprised in the other room, expecting this temple's secrets discovered and our lives safe,” spoke Kiloplo, “but this was not true, let us not relax or guard in this chamber either!”

They nod and grunt in agreement and prepare!

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

They approached the door, one like the other which would swivel on a central pivot; inside they could see a rusted iron cage hanging from the centre of the chamber from the twelve foot high ceiling, the cage itself had no sign of a door on any part of it's construction, but within the cage there was a skeleton, the group stiffen, they had enough experiences of skeletons this day to fear what may occur.

For a few heartbeats later nothing had happen and the adventurers in the torch light could
begin to discern the features of the tall skeleton, perhaps it was ten feet tall with ram-like horns on each side of it's skull, and the bone structure of it's back defined what should have held wings. It's fists still gripped the bars of the cage and died many, many years ago...
Beyond, was a pentagram etched into the floor, and within the circle lies a well kept silver knife...
They slowly more around the cage on each side of it in a dazed trance, carefully attempting to avoid it and stealthy more by it unheard...
The silver knife was tempting, each knew it was of worth, yet feared to reach out and take it, even Bâjûir held back, fighting monsters was one thing, strange magic was another.
“This is an unholy place,” hissed Shárâ, “I wish I could sanctify it!”
Ploikil was unsure, “this is a place of the goddess Aurorus, show some concern for her worth,” and with that he stepped into the pentagram and pick up the silver knife.
“Fools! How dare you destroy my host? No matter, my new host will prove even more powerful! I will be free!” Screamed a voice from the skeleton.
"Krimmr!" Hissed Bâjûir....
The group turn in horror, they saw no movement from the skeleton yet needed no prompting as they rushed for the door...
"Get out and seal this dæmon within...!” Cries Kiloplo.
They bundled out of the entranceway and turned pulling the heavy door shut...
"What did it mean, a new host?" Gasped Hálumán.
“Curses,” hissed Bâjûir again, “what kind of horror was that?”
“No time, take what you can and flee,” urged Kiloplo, “I will explain matters to him that I speak for, go!”
Assiminik scoops up his idol of Kthulhu and the halberd is carried by Bálârón, they quickly make haste to the stairs and travel up their twisting constructs...

They reach the cellar and lower the door over the stairway, replacing the slab in hope it was enough...
Kiloplo paused, “it is not our domain or within our power to dabble in such things,” he turned and strolled to the stairs to the kitchen, “I will advise he whom I speak for and return with advice, farewell for the now!”
With the Hyperborean gone, the youthful group felt depleted, the Warlock was of great power and they had so little left...

“Let us retreat upstairs, we shall explain to Xill there is still a few matters to deal with,” said Hálumán.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

They trundled out the tavern and up to Xill's room and got the Man to open the door...
“What has happen,” said Xill, counting those coming in, “where is Master Kiloplo?”
“He is safe for the now good Xill,” said Hálumán, “but our business if still incomplete, though we believe the rats are destroyed and fled and their queen, which was a dæmon was destroyed by magic and missile!”
“Why that is fantastic,” Stuttered a frantic Xill, in part joy and part fear, “what else seems to be the problem?”
Bâjûir walked in and slammed his hand down on Xill's shoulder, “nothing to bother you with, just a little clearance job, to make the place downstairs more secure, come sit down and pore me a mug of ale!”
The Kimmeri-Kelt lead Xill to his bed and the few supplies brought up to his room to keep them feed and nourished was stacked close by.
Assiminik spoke with Hálumán in a whisper, “look Annesta is sullen and grey, we could procure a cure for her from the sorcerer in his tower!”
“Aye,” said the magician, “that is a fine plan.”

Hours passed and though they felt a little safe, things were tense and quiet...
Assiminik found a corner of the room and placed his idol on the floor borrowing a couple of candles from Hálumán and places them on each side of the statue and lit them. The Esquimaux supplicate himself before the make-shift alter and remain quiet.
The Kimmerians sat cross-legged in the middle of the floor in a circle, eating and drinking, pondering the mornings events. Shárâ also knelt beside them, quiet and concerned.
Her failure in the room with the skeletons vexed her, she had never seen their like before, and this had been her first time confronted with such a force! Her training had only describe such events, but never had she ever experienced any undead creature before of any type.
Ploikil paced, but stern stares from the Kimmerians, caused him to sit down, he wished he had gone with Kiloplo, but then there would be less here to protect the occupants of the tavern if something did occur.
More hours passed and the afternoon was becoming evening when Kiloplo returned...
“We must prepare again,” spoke Kiloplo, “it is true as the Cleric spoke, such places will need sanctified, but for now we must make way for he whom I speak for. Do not ask him questions, do not harry him and do not presume he as the at least concern for your existences. Just guard him and allow him to perform is work.
The sound of heavy footfalls were below, “I also hired a troop of mercenaries to assist, no expense to you, they are for his safety alone, what else we find down there that is not lore is yours, rest assured, come!”
“One moment good Kiloplo,” said Hálumán, “can I have a word?”
“Make it quick Magician,” he retorted.
“It is about Annesta,” indicating the daughter of Xill, “she is ill, I was wondering if you could provide a cure as you did Ploikil, we would be very grateful!” Kiloplo looked at the young lass, “this stuff is not cheap,” he growled, “but we were most fortunate that not one of us was bitten by even one rat as we explored below, so yes,” he reached into his pouch and pulled out a stout, small glass bottle, “drink this quick!” he said to her and she did, then the Hyperborean grabbed back the bottle and placed it in his pouch, “she should feel fine in a few minutes, keep her warm and feed her, she will get hungry quickly; and give her plenty of water,” he said firmly to Xill.
Hálumán did not get much time to to thank Kiloplo as he stomped out the door in haste, “come!” He shouted after him.

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

They trekked downstairs to watch a dark carriage pulled by two sturdy black horses come around the corner from the main road on the opposite side of the tavern from the docks.

Twenty rugged swordsmen in mail and donned helms from many nations stood ready, shields on arm and swords in scabbards at their hips.
Kiloplo moved to the back door to the kitchen, ordering half the troops inside and telling them to enter the cellar.
Torches were proved and as the carriage arrived and stopped, it's door was swung open with a slam and out stepped a tall Man in black robes and boots, his cowl flung forward so that his face was in darkness, only a thick white long beard was shown hanging down his chest.
Kiloplo lead the robed Man into the kitchen and down the stairs into the cellar, followed by the adventurers. The flagstone was removed again and the trapdoor open.
Then Bâjûir and Bálârón were indicated to go down first to give the mercenaries some encouragement, which they did and lead the way with torches.
At the bottom the two started setting the torches in scones and lighting more.

“Splay out and guard the area,” ordered Kiloplo of the mercenaries, which they did without question, though they looked a little hesitant.
Being back in the temple generate the eerie feeling the adventurers had before and the dark shadows seem to come alive again; a possessing dæmon spirit inhabited this temple and was near.
They give the Dark Magician time to concentrate as the mercenaries stare around them in amazement, tavern and city wall were more their environment.
The Dark Magician recites an incantation, then indicated that he required the door to be opened, Bálârón locates the hidden mechanism, much like the other door he had found and opened the door, then quickly steps out the way. The cowled Man slowly walks forth into the chamber alone!
The high pitch screech of the enraged voice pierced the ears of those who could hear outside, then instantly the door swivel shut with a slam. The mercenaries and the adventurers gripped there weapons tightly looking around them...
“At ease dogs,” shouted Kiloplo, “it is as it should be, do yer job and ye'll be paid!”
Minutes, pasted, then into hours, the sweat pored from under helmet and fingers fidgeted in leather bond hilts.
Hálumán returned to the other chamber giving Kiloplo a look and who nodded back..., there he spends some time examining the books, though he did find nothing of great interest to him, the language was incomprehensible to him. He later returned to the temple, content he could do no more.
Assiminik was a Ranger, he could sit for hour unmoving, but he did prefer the outdoors to rancid dungeons.
Shárâ approached Kiloplo, “if you may, I could attempt to heal you wound now, she inquired, “ it might not be a great job, but it will improve it!”
Kiloplo looked at her sternly, then nodded. Shárâ concentrates and a faint humming chant came to her lips as she touch the Hyperborean chest, some of his wound was healed, though is was not a great amount!
“Good enough,” he said gruffly.

Eventually, Bálârón, Bâjûir and Assiminik become curious and set to return down into the depths of the dungeon area; they had refused to go further once the dæmon rat had been killed, but it just seemed they had killed the dæmon's host and there was no more danger from them.
The dungeon was in the same mess as before though the web had disappeared as if had never been there, the rupture body of the bloated rat lay as it had, it litter lifeless as they hung from her carcass.
The stench was repulsive, and they covered their noses as the moved around it, then at the end of the corridor was an alcove and in it the nest of the dæmon rat.
As they had suspected as they riffled through the debris with caution that like above the rats had enjoy the shin of anything that glittered, they found coins, gold electrum and silver, a pearl ring, a gold chain and a silver chained periapt with a set aquamarine opal in it.
The three adventurers gave each other a grin and returned back up the stairs cautiously avoiding the mess.
“I going to need a new pair of boots after this delve,” grimly spoke Assiminik.
The other two look at him and grinned.

Hálumán was there watching the three appear from the lower cells and pondered himself, there was other rich down below that they could possible not know of and he himself carefully went down the steps...

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

Another hour of waiting and eventually the door opens with grating sound causing even Kiloplo to reach for his battle axe, but only the black robe Man came out.
Kiloplo hasten to him and the other talked to him in whispers. But any noticing could see Kiloplo relax.
Kiloplo turned to the host around him, “it is done,” as if hiding something from the mercenaries, and that only the adventurers knew his meaning.
“Return outside, we are finished here!” Commanded Kiloplo...
some of the mercenaries hesitated, the black robe Man, the one they had been paid to protect still stood before the door, but as they watched him, he raise his hand and chanted and disappearing without a trace.
“Go, it is finished, stop standing gawking,” he growls at the mercenaries, “you have been sworn to secrecy, make sure your mercenary oaths stay intact or we will have words!”

Outside Kiloplo pays the mercenaries individually and sent them on their way.
“Double month pay for a few hours worth of work, who can complain,” he growled at the youths. He paused a moment, “so it is finished, you fought well and are owed praise, still do not rush into any dæmon haunted temples in the future without the proper tools!”
“I am only a veteran of many battle and even fighting dæmons is rare for me, but I am told to explain to you that he whom I speak for will examine any items you got if you wish, free gratis so it be known, plus he will be purchasing this tavern from Xill and turning it into a mini-fortress, we do not want any stray foolish things happening in future, do we?”
The adventurers had to agree with him, and agreed that he took the items they had found, though Assiminik refused to relinquish his idol to Kthulhu.
“So be it, “ said Kiloplo.
The adventurers make their way back to Xill's room to find a near dancing Annesta, and with joyous smile she seems to thank each adventurers as they came into the room.
“She is cured,” smiles Xill, even he had allowed himself a moments happiness as his daughter regained her health.
He thrust the the pearl necklace and magical shield into Hálumán's hands, “thank you, thank you, thank you,” he chanted.
The adventurers could not but smile at the Man's happiness, but something ailed them.
Kiloplo moved by them and collected the halberd and silver dagger, he also took the magical shield, so they could know what it was.
“You might as well take these,” said Assiminik, the Esquimaux gave the Hyperborean the gold chain, pearl ring and silver chained periapt.
“This pearl necklace might be of interest,” said Hálumán.
“Fine,” said Kiloplo, “he whom I speak for has ask you Hálumán if you wish to accompany me to his tower, perhaps to see his research laboratories and perhaps learn something in the your process of your efforts!”
Hálumán was aghast, but grateful, “yes, I would he honoured, indeed,” he turned to his fellow adventurers, “I will return soon.”
“If not tomorrow, the day after,” Said Kiloplo, “But I will return tomorrow with these items properly catalogued for you.”
The adventurers near bowed in appreciation, and smiled as Kiloplo left...
“I need a bath,” said Bâjûir...

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

A Time to Relax:

A day passed and Kiloplo did return, they sat in the tavern main drinking watered ale. They now use the lower floor to doss in as the tavern was still quiet and free of any patrons. Kiloplo nodded at them and asked for a short moment so he could speak with Xill who he lead into kitchen for a private word with him and his daughter.
The Hyperborean joined them later at their table and began explaining to them the extent of their items, some were magical and some were not.
The pearl necklace was just that a pearl necklace, containing no magical properties, nor was the pearl ring.
The periapt however was a great and powerful item and should be treated with regard, “A Periapt of Health,” said the Hyperborean, “this will grant the owner of such an item immunity to diseases, magical or otherwise, but first it must be placed around one's neck!”
“The shield grants a slight enhancement to protection,” he explains, “plus the obvious faint light, there seems to be no way to turn it off though.”
The weapons are magical precision weapons, enhancing both attack and damage by a small amount,” he continued, “and a silver blade is useful again lycanthropes,” he smiled.
“Oh, and one more thing,” he said, “give Hálumán a few more days. Magicians once they get to talking?”
“Still cannot maligner here,” he said rising from the bench, “my Captain will be missing me and we should be setting sail in a couple of days and I as 1st mate, I believe I should be close to the ship before it's departing!”
He stared at them sternly, “I probably not see most of you again and such is life, but remember this, do not give the enemy a second chance for they will not give it to you!” He grunts, then turned and stomps out the tavern.
They sat pondering the day as Xill came in the tavern main from the kitchen and crossed to
their table. He looked part relieved, part concerned.
“I have been paid by that darked robed fellow to vacate these premises,” he said hesitantly, “he has paid me three times what I bought the place for and I suppose there is a lot of bad memories for me here in this place and I have family in the east-end of the city.
They grunt approvingly at him and got him to join them at their table...
“It is for the best Xill,” said Bâjûir, “this place is cursed and even though it has been made safe, there is no need to take any more risks!”
“Yes I sure you right, and it will be best for my daughter!”
“Indeed!”

Re: Rats in a Trap (SPOILER)

Hálumán New Incantation:

Hálumán spend some days with the Dark Magician, the sorcerer giving him permission to study his spellbook for a useful spell. The Kimmerian queries the Dark Magician about detecting magic and the unnamed sorcerer open the heavy volume at one particular spell.
Hálumán's intelligence  is keen, but the Dark Magician has explains things about the spell that helps the Kimmerian comprehend the intricacies of the spell.  He pens the spell into his spellbook, using the blood of the dæmonic rat they destroyed in the temple.

Days passed and Hálumán returned the “Silvery Eel,” and took Annesta aside, explaining something to her, she looked hesitant, but agreed.
“What was that about,” asked Bálârón.
“Some concern for Annesta, she was the one the dæmon had tried to possess and I was explaining to her the the dark robe gentleman had a wish to speak with her. Truth is he will scry that she is safe and just for precaution remove any curses that might be bestowed on her!”
“Well I guess it does not hurt to be sure,” said Bâjûir.
“Exactly,” said Hálumán.
Later Hálumán lead Annesta to her room, waiting for them in the hallway was the cowled dark Magician.
“Come in, this will be quick Annesta,” said Hálumán talking for the silence one, “we have to be sure that no ill-effects are affect you!”
She nods, concern and with restrained fear...
The cowled one chanted, the air thicken and seem to swirl around her, the air though silent seem to screech, though there was no sound, it was as if hands reached into her chest and pulled out want not ought to be there, she felt cleanse as if the last of the poison, the fear
she felt had been removed. The cowled one nodded once to Hálumán and walked to the door silently and left the room.
“That is it done now Annesta, you are safe now,” said Hálumán, “helping her sit, you will be able to live you life free of this horror for now on!”
This ends this brave adventure, Xill Vuntos and his daughter Annestra moved to the eastside with great wealth. Our adventurers moved to a proper inn where they watched from the harbour as the 'Silver Eel,' was walled on the outside with thick granite blocks, a iron portcullis was the only way in or out and guards patrolled the inside  of the sealed building, day and night.

The End, for now!
