The simplest way would be to split the day evenly on noon. Then decide how to deal with some of the fractions. The daylight increment is 5 minutes so that will be the rough increment as well.

So a day with 5 hours 25 minutes of daylight (Month IV, Week 1, Cycle 2) would have sunrise 2.5 hours before noon and sunset 2.5 hours after noon. Then to deal with that damn 25 minutes, sunrise comes 15 minutes earlier and sunset set 10 minutes later (from the 2.5 hour split) so:

Sunrise: 9:15am
Sunset: 2:40pm

Would that be a reasonable way to handle it?

I think it would be doable. I can fiddle with it and see.

Seems reasonable to me... Of course I have no idea how hard it might be to execute.

Not criticizing at all, but something I would find useful as a referee would be sunrise/sunset times, in lieu of hours of daylight figures.

Hyperborea does indeed have east and west. Wherever you are, if you face Mount Vhuumithadon, then Helios rises behind you to your right, and it sets behind you to your left. Of course it never rises far above the horizon, peaking at only about 25° in mid-summer.

What I would suggest in lieu of official rules is make the PCs make a Test of Constitution for each day the PC goes without water after one day of deprivation. Each failure of a Test of Constitution temporarily reduces the PC's constitution by one point. A similar mechanic is in effect for each day the PC goes without food after three days of deprivation. You make TWO tests per day if you're out of both food and water. Cobstitution returns to its normal level after one day of adequate hydration and nutrition. When Constitution hits zero you're dead.

I like the gist of this idea, but I’d suggest an extraordinary feat of constitution for each day without water (after the first day) or each week without food. The PC is defenceless when CN reaches 2 and dies when CN reaches 0. Lost CN returns at 1 point per day of adequate food and water.

I think the encumbrance penalties would suffice. The referee also might consider layered furs the equivalent of padded armour and impose a 1-in-6 chance of spell failure for sorcerers not permitted light armour.

Have a look at the Rogues Gallery characters in APPENDIX C of the Second Edition hardback for a sense of how much magic PCs of various levels might have.

So, a caster could not cast a spell and try to attack with a dagger in the same combat round.  It would be committing to one of those 2 things each round.

Also, the melee, missiles, magic, movement parts of a phase are not a set order but rather, a list of events that may occur in any given phase of combat.

Just so, in both cases.

From VOL. III, p. 266: EXPERIENCE POINTS (XP), gaining experience points:

XP Distribution: Experience point distribution can be a tricky subject, though only as complicated as the referee chooses.
Even Distribution: In the broadest sense, XP should be divided equally amongst the PCs, even when one character outshines the rest of the party.
Solo Distribution: Sometimes a player character will perform individual activity deserving of solo XP. Example: A thief sneaks ahead to scout the opposition and runs into a pair of orc guards. He fights them by himself and wins by dint of his blade before his allies arrive. In such an instance, the thief may be awarded solo XP.

My feeling is that the 1,000 XP for Dagon’s harness should be divided evenly amongst the party, unless one PC recovered it by himself.

I wouldn’t be inclined to penalize an archer for firing his bow whilst being attacked in melee, but because of the minimum six-foot missile range, in most cases the archer must be firing at a target other than his attacker.

From VOL. IV, p. 293: BEAST AND MONSTER STATISTICShit dice:

HIT DICE (HD): The number of dice rolled to determine the monster’s hit points (hp). Typically a d8 hit die type is used, though exceptions are possible. Some monsters have bonus hit points added to the base HD total; e.g., “4+2” equals the sum of 4d8, plus 2 extra hit points. Other monsters have but ½ or ¼ HD; these are hit point ranges of 1d4 and 1d2, respectively. When a monster’s hit points reach 0, it is dead, but humanoids may be reduced to as low as −3 and remain unconscious; anything lower results in death.

The text mentions "paralysis" in both 1E and 2E of Hyperborea. Does that mean that after the fiendishly long-lasting paralysis of a ghoul's touch ends, the poor victim also has to roll a trauma survival check to go on with their miserable adventurer life?

This is one of the slight tweaks we made in the Second Edition Players’ Manual:

Trauma Survival: The likelihood of surviving a system transformation of shocking degree, such as petrifaction or polymorph. It also represents the chance one has to be successfully resurrected from death.

Requiring a trauma survival check for paralysis was an early development idea that never was properly articulated. (As usual, blame the editor.) Whilst reviewing the PM manuscript, we took the opportunity to clarify exactly which effects require a trauma survival check:
• deliberate ageing
• resurrection (including brink of death and delay poison)
gelatinize bones
• reversing petrifaction, polymorph other, or transfer youthfulness
• curing russet mould infection
• impalement by backbiter spear
boots of speed

A referee certainly can play them that way, but that was not the intent. With rare exception (e.g., shocking grasp), armour class is armour class, whether imparted by armour worn, dexterity, and/or sorcery.

I definitely think that is the intent of the rule, but I think it gets a bit lost in the language.

I love rich language usage but in some cases it gets in the way of clarity. A self bow isn't mentioned anywhere else in the player volumes.

So, not a typo but something that might trip up folks.

This was indeed the intent. Blame the editor for lack of clarity.

In my personal, non-canonical opinion, upon initial treatment the shaman would realize that the symptoms are of no disease he’s seen before.
