The setting is very detailed on what it is it seems but leaves a bit that you can customize but overall it is pretty defined.

There is no particular relationship between the setting and the Hyborian Age, and in fact I would say Howard's overall influence on the setting is the weakest of any of the three Weird Tales authors*. It resembles Smith's Hyperborea (with some elements from Smith's Zothique) much more, but only in a very vague and general way. It's a pastiche, but - as Mr. Savage aptly notes - that just means it belongs to YOU now. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/smile.png

* - I would eyeball the author influences at about 40% Smith, 30% Lovecraft, 15% Howard (at most), and 15% other (Vance, etc.). The people who refer to it as "Conan the RPG" are pretty far off-base, in my opinion, and setting up a burden for the setting it was never intended to meet. For example, in my experience people have an exaggerated view of how rare and weak magic was in the Hyborian Age. But even to the extent that it was rare and weak in Howard's stories, the Hyperborea setting was clearly inspired more by the much more magical Smith settings. So complaining that the magic in AS&SH doesn't work like it does in the Conan stories (even assuming the critic does in fact have much knowledge of the Hyborian Age, which is not necessarily the case in my observation) is rather missing the point.

ETA: These are just my observations as a fan of the game and all three authors. I have no special knowledge of Jeff's intentions with the setting, other than what he's stated publically.

The boldened part is the part that has disturbed me.  I am first and foremost a Howard fan when it comes to sword & sorcery and expected this game to ooze that Howardian feeling but in the few sessions I have ran yet the setting just is not feeling like it to me.  It seems much more weird fantasy than Howardian sword & sorcery.  I am conflicted as to if I should keep pushing on with AS&SH or go back to Barbarians of Lemuria Mythic Edition or Beasts & Barbarians Steel Editio

Then he's thinking of the two phases as separate rounds, not one round. He gets to cast in a round, or fight in a round, he shouldn't get or be allowed to do both. Especially when you factor the concentration required for casting.

I agree completely.

I think it would be helpful, old school or not, to explain what is meant by this in either flavor text or mechanics.  Does binding wounds heal someone a little that has received HPs worth of damage but is still up and fighting? Or is it meant to stabilize someone that is down and in negative HPs and unconscious.  I do not feel it is necessarily against the old school mentality to at least have a base level of clarity on things of this nature.

I am pretty old school myself, btw, being 45 years old and having started with D&D in around 1982 or so.

I do believe I missed that phrase though about binding wounds on pg 261.

The game seems to imply in the section on actions in combat that an ally can bind wounds if he has bandages but I cannot seem to find a rule for how this works anywhere, not even in the section on death and dying.

How does this work and can it stabilize a dying character?

So, a caster could not cast a spell and try to attack with a dagger in the same combat round.  It would be committing to one of those 2 things each round.

Also, the melee, missiles, magic, movement parts of a phase are not a set order but rather, a list of events that may occur in any given phase of combat.

If you are 3/2 for attacks you have to split 3 attacks over 2 rounds.  Do you have to do the first round as 2/1 and then round 2 as 1/1 or could you do it in the opposite if you wanted?

So, tonight we played session 2 of my local AS&SH 2e game playing the intro adventure "The Black Moss Hag" and I am noticing some things with the game.

I noticed that some of my players are really struggling with the chart that shows how actions work with their multiple attacks and other such actions.  Should I jettison the chart and just go with what feels right/is logical? Should I import the action point economy from 5e or something? How have your games faired in this regard?

Players were asking things like "What if I want to attack with my Quarterstaff when the melee portion of the phase comes up and then want to cast Magic Missile once the spell part comes up?" "What if I want to attack with my dagger during the melee part of the phase and then throw a dart once it is missile time?"

I am also noticing that my players are not immersing in the adventure and are often distracted with cell phones and unrelated talk.  I m not sure if it is because it is not catching their imaginations by fault of the system or adventure or my GM'ing or just them being easily distracted.

Have any of you messed with changing initiative? Do you use individual player initiative at all? I am not sure if they are digging initiative or not.  Are you supposed to reroll initiative for each side each phase or each round or just once per combat overall?

Do you guys have a recommended order of adventures?

We just kicked off our campaign last night with the intro adventure in the core rulebook, The Black Moss-Hag of Lug, and I am wondering what I will run next for them.

In the adventure a magical item is looted called Dagon's Harness.  It has an item xp value of 1,000 xp.  Does the person who dons the armor and keeps get this xp only or is it still split with the entire group, please?

Note that each test's description starts with "The chance-in-six to" - that means the test is rolled on a d6 and an equal or lower number is required for a success. For example, the notation 3:6 means a roll of 1, 2, or 3 would succeed on the d6.

Similarly, for extraordinary feat the table notes the chance in %, meaning the roll is made with a d100, an equal or lower roll resulting in success (so if you have 4% to succeed with an extraordinary feat, only a roll of 01, 02, 03, or 04 on the d100 would net a success).

What table are you referring to, please?

The book does not seem to spell out how attribute tests are supposed to work.  It gives several scenarios where these tests are appriopriate but no actual example or explanation of how to actually roll them.  I am assuming you roll a d20 and try to score under or equal to the attribute in question.  If so, how is this different when rolling an extraordinary feat? For extraordinary attribute feats would the referee assign penalties maybe?

Scythium is the country in the Gazetteer with the capital being Fazzuum!  I think this is the largest gathering of Ixians on Hyperborea.

Thank you! This setting is looking pretty awesome.  I am going to start running my campaign soon and cannot wait to explore Hyperborea.

I am still reading through the gazeteer info currently.

Anywhere Ixians hang out in large numbers.  They seem to be the closest to the Stygians.

That is how it seemed to me so far as well.
