I have been greatly influenced in my recent Ref'ing by Classic Traveller's "Situation Throws":  rather than scrupulously building up an abstruse model of circumstances, roll the dice, and that's the difficulty of this situation. Why? Only the dice gods know...

Thoughts on having it take a few more months (say...4-6) to rebuild the temple faithful, or have Zilzoon pull in "reinforcements" from the faithful at other, smaller temples?

As always, I'd let the dice decide. You have two options listed above, so I'd probably go with:
Roll a d6 for the # of months to pull together reinforcements: then you have a 1/3 chance they're already in place, and a 2/3 chance they'll take longer than present. That's how indolent I am: no more thought than that, move along. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

In a sense, we've gone back to a 1st ed concept: One person doing all the character class illustrations. For 2e it was a mix of three artists. Anyway, the 3e class pictures are brilliant, and I can't wait to start sharing them with you folks.

I love the 1e art: I made my own Ref Screen from them back then (10 years? Good God...). I appreciate you sharing the 3e art with us when the stars are right.

With the exception of the Carolingian Franks, every "new" race mentioned has already been a part of the setting if you dig around through the gazetteer, so no retcon of anything is necessary. It's more a matter of all these races mentioned before not being presented as playable options, and now they are.

Excellent, glad to hear this. Though, should there be only 12 Paladins if the Carolingian Franks are "new"? https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png

Beyond the Wall and Through Sunken Lands both introduce Cantrips and Rituals (while preserving Old School Vancian Spells): the former matches your desire above (slight magical effect), and the latter is more powerful (but taking an hour/level to cast). Both are rolled for success, however, with failure causing the loss of all magical ability or an unwanted side-effect (caster choice) and the latter always working, but with an unwanted side-effect on failure. It's an interesting adjunct to standard OSR spells.

Excellent review, and nice to see AS&SH accurately characterized and lauded.

Seconded for a 3e revised character sheet: I also find the 4-page sheet too much, and have toyed on-and-off with my own. While I love the aesthetic of the current official sheet, a simple two-sided sheet is more my preference. But with style!

I read Empire of the East, and enjoyed it somewhat: Saberhagen is not my favorite of the classic authors, as I find his style spare and unassuming. Still, the setting idea was interesting. I couldn't finish his Books of Swords books...

Looking forward to separate books again: while the 2E Compleat is beautiful, I wish I had a GM's-only book for it, to match the Player's book.

And now I see I didn't answer the specific question asked...for hirelings/henchman I'd still stick to the "anything but a PC is dead at 0 HP" rule, because I like my PCs to have that advantage over non-PCs. Just another way to differentiate the adventurers from the hoi polloi.

In AS&SH 2E Compleat, p.293, under Hit Dice:
"When a monster’s hit points reach 0, it is dead, but humanoids may be reduced to as low as −3 and remain
unconscious; anything lower results in death."

I treat all "monsters" (party adversaries) as dead at 0, to simplify things.

Ok, I got the hp thing sorted out. I didn't have the HD data in the sciomancer class. At all. So. yeah. garbage in, garbage out.

Thank you!

As for the "Take the stats and create a pdf" link.

I suppose I could take that choice out.

I think my intent was that you would copy the stats, go to that page, paste them in and add extra stuff. Which might not be what most folks would do.

I don't think that was obvious, but one could always do the "add extra stuff" to the form-fillable PDF, right?

I created one each of a 2nd-level Gloomhaunter and Sciomancer, and one odd thing is the link on the results pages for "Take the stats and create a pdf" takes you back to the initial generation page; the "create pdf with this stat block" link works properly, though (i.e., creates a form-fillable PDF character sheet).

For the Sciomancer, CN = 4, the HD type wasn't filled in, and the character had 0 HP. Oddly, my Gloomhaunter also had a CN = 4, and 5 HP. These were both generated using Method 3, Strictness 3.

Otherwise, everything looked good.

Nice ideas, guys. I checked out those books and picked up a Silent Legions pdf. It has some real good stuff!

I find all of Sine Nomine Pub's stuff great source material (especially since some are free, like Godbound, Stars Without Number, and now Worlds Without Number). His Red Tide setting is highly compatible with AS&SH, too.

Excellent idea...I like the 0-level funnel idea, and think you could simply let folks pick whatever class they qualify for once in Hyperborea. Given Hyperborea's out-of-space, out-of-time "position", anything is possible. So, a couple of ideas:
1. Start as 0-level nobodies with a background (e.g., journalist, soldier, scientist, etc.), pick class if they survive the first session.
2. Use Eldritch Tales or Silent Legions as the "fake start" to a modern horror campaign, then have it get even weirder than they thought when they're cast into Hyperborea...Way Beyond the Mountains of Madness.

As for the magician, or any sorcerous class: I'd not sweat how their powers are granted, and let that develop in play.

I think I might even put in DMPrata's new classes (and mine) just because I can :-)

That would be awesome: I ran a quick-prep session this past weekend, and one of my players wanted to play a Gloomhaunter (which didn't take too long to generate, honestly), but the "go to gizmo's site" would have been even easier. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png
