Indeed...cryodrakon-mounted cataphracts would be a fearsome sight.

Legerdemainist?

Yes, that would be the left-handed version...https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/love.png

The classes are one of the best things about the game from a coolness standpoint and tend to be forgotten behind the world setting.

Yup: this and the solid old-school rules are why I use AS&SH in my own setting.

Thanks for the detailed session report, sounds like you're having fun. I especially like how you went with the player's suggestion about the extraordinary feat of Con: that's the spirit I run with as well, open conversations between Ref and players and roll dice only when needed.

The cave ended up being a lost tomb of some sorts. His keen intellect deduced very little other than it was shelter and now they had food in the wolf meat that he just procured. One of his companions roamed the cave and found a sarcophagus. Hallvardr checked for traps before opening it.

(Now he didn't have that skill so I just gave him a 1:6 chance to find anything. Could this have been done differently or better?)

That's probably how I would have done it, too: the Non-Standard Task Resolution (some chance in 6, based on Ref judgment and circumstances) is a powerful, broad system. I might also have simply said "no chance, infringes on a class ability", unless they specifically stated *how* they were checking for traps.

I'd rule no change: it's less cumbersome (being magical), but not less protective than it's unmagical counterpart.

So my 3 players roll individually and then I roll once for all the monsters?

Sorry it’s like a square peg in a round hole for me.

By the book, one d6 roll per side, PCs and opponents. I suppose you could have more than two sides, though the implied default is two.

Woohoo! Ghul didn't hate the idea!

I've thought about it a bit and I think I'll go with the die progression idea.

I would have to ponder Iron Ranger's experience idea a bit.

First though, I'll try out the base idea and see how it plays out.

Die progression would be my preference, too. I wish I'd thought of it!

I like the die-progression idea, too, especially if you're going to improve with character levels. Much like Attribute Tests can be extrapolated along the lines of Deities & Demigods: 7:8, 9:10, 11:12, etc.

OK, maybe not my best example, because yes, the darn thing has a trigger and a barrel. LOL.

As an example from last week's game, the party were in a library and saw some weird star charts describing the Helios system. One chart indicated that Hyperborea is in fact a moon of Saturn. Another chart had a different orbital suggestion. Player wanted to know if his character knew anything about any of this stuff. I don't want a "test of intelligence" for this sort of thing. Your cataphract may have a greater intelligence score than the druid, who has spent his life studying the skies, but that doesn't mean he should have a better chance to know something about the charts. I prefer to consider the character and the circumstances and then determine a reasonable chance-in-six. That's what I was trying to say, gents!

This is precisely how I run the Non-Standard Task System: Referee's mind + Player's description + circumstances = some chance. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

This boggled my mind. I had a hard time understanding why someone who DIDN'T read those books would even want to play such a narrowly tuned game setting and system that was derived from fiction and games that the younger folks weren't even alive to experience.  Of course, my first thought was "Well, AS&SH is a pretty good game all by itself I guess!"  My second was that I needed to proselytize more about reading the contents of Appendix N.  My third was that would just annoy people even more.  Not only would I be accusing them of playing the game wrong, I'm telling them that only with some education they could be playing it the right way.

Nope, gonna keep my mouth shut.  Anyways, read the article.

At 55 I'm the second oldest in my group. I was raised on the LotRs, Conan, and a smattering of ERB, Heinlein, and others. One of my youngest was raised on Harry Potter, Twilight, and other of that ilk. I'm not sure the amount of reading the other players have done but I do not get the impression that they have read much fantasy fiction. We all meet every other Friday night for the experience of playing AS&SH! For me, the game introduced me to CA Smith and caused me to pick up and read HPL (finally). The others may read sword and sorcery fiction as a result of being exposed to AS&SH, that would be cool. But, if playing the game scratches that itch then that's cool as well!

Similar backstory for me: I don't expect all of us (ranging from 13 - 54) to have the same background. All I ask is that everyone have fun and pay attention at the table. Maybe they'll get inspired by the weird and go off and read some of the sources of inspiration for Hyperborea, maybe they won't. And the upside of their unknowing is all the weird will be novel to them...https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

I use Tales of the Grotesque and Dungeonesque for inspiration: Vol. 1 has a d100 table of such backgrounds.

What a fabulous resource! Positively ripe with ideas. Thanks for the pointer.

My pleasure: all three volumes are excellent sources of inspiration for Hyperborea.
