I have seen every one of the Subclasses for the thief played in the previous or current campaign.  The only complaint I heard was that the Purloiner would not get the neutralize poison spell (4th level cleric and they only get 3rd level). The assasin was a bit hard to play with a group as they need complete surprise to assassinate. I would allow the character to sneak in afte a melee had begun and allow an attempt (from hiding) on a distracted target. This is probably a symptom of the type not as presented in ASSH. I've not had someone play a thief class as the lure of magic is strong!  They have all had fun and I really like the coolness of the rogues with spellcasting ability.

I've only had one in my campaign, a Prestidigitator, and the player seems to enjoy the mix of Thief and Magician.

Thanks to a lot of feedback and messages from this community to help get this out.

I’ve actually gotten a lot of 5e players asking about ASSH.

Good stuff!
I particularly love the Fighter Base Class that has Grand Mastery making them the most skilled of the Fighter types. The Cataphract is a great class with immunity to fear, inc AC in Heavy armor, and HONOR!  The Honor ability is a role-play skill and may get glossed over but has the ability to get the character out of situations that fighting cannot.
I've never had the Paladin or Barbarian in actual play but the rest have all been fun.

Please keep doing these!  The classes are one of the best things about the game from a coolness standpoint and tend to be forgotten behind the world setting.

There is also the Minotron on p302 that is a bit more info.  I don't see them as being very different on Hyperborea than other sources, yet they do have their own island.  They are very much the greek creature of legend.  I just last Friday finished up an adventure in which I used Female Minotaurs on the Floating Isle of Paradoxon and the Cloud City as allies of the Amazons.  They were guardians of the Queen and classed as berserkers to make them a tad more ferocious!

Great Review. You devoured a lot of material in a short period! I was able to listen to the entire review, great work!

So my 3 players roll individually and then I roll once for all the monsters?

Sorry it’s like a square peg in a round hole for me.

By the book, one d6 roll per side, PCs and opponents. I suppose you could have more than two sides, though the implied default is two.

For me, this is how I handle initiative. I generally let the player side go in whatever order they want, or just around the table.

Personally, I don't think anyone who came from a culture with crossbows would have much trouble figuring out any kind of firearm. That's how I would rule anyway. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/smile.png

Same here. Between that and rumors/stories of such that inevitably float around every tavern, I'm generally good on basic pistols and rifles. I don't want to spend a ton of precious game time having players roleplay discovering how what looks like a metal-barreled crossbow or metal handled blow-gun works. Maybe if we're literally talking cave men, but not professional adventurers and treasure hunters.

Though I did enjoy seeing the characters figure out and being shot by a zirconium suit.....

But the younger ones are all about the anime and the various stories. My exposure to that stopped somewhere in the mid-90s and I have no sense of what is out there any more.

Lots of anime influence in pathfinder, 5e art and systems.

This boggled my mind. I had a hard time understanding why someone who DIDN'T read those books would even want to play such a narrowly tuned game setting and system that was derived from fiction and games that the younger folks weren't even alive to experience.  Of course, my first thought was "Well, AS&SH is a pretty good game all by itself I guess!"  My second was that I needed to proselytize more about reading the contents of Appendix N.  My third was that would just annoy people even more.  Not only would I be accusing them of playing the game wrong, I'm telling them that only with some education they could be playing it the right way.

Nope, gonna keep my mouth shut.  Anyways, read the article.

At 55 I'm the second oldest in my group. I was raised on the LotRs, Conan, and a smattering of ERB, Heinlein, and others. One of my youngest was raised on Harry Potter, Twilight, and other of that ilk. I'm not sure the amount of reading the other players have done but I do not get the impression that they have read much fantasy fiction. We all meet every other Friday night for the experience of playing AS&SH! For me, the game introduced me to CA Smith and caused me to pick up and read HPL (finally). The others may read sword and sorcery fiction as a result of being exposed to AS&SH, that would be cool. But, if playing the game scratches that itch then that's cool as well!

Also, all PCs get a 20 HP "kicker" at 1st level.  I cribbed this one from Hackmaster.

Characters begin with HP equal to Constitution

As characters level, they re-roll HP dice and only begin to increase total HP when the dice roll (+con mod) is greater than their Con attribute.

HP over Con attribute restores overnight with a good rest. HP up to their Con restore more slowly like normal HP.

I had toyed with monsters crits not being multiples of their damage dice but going straight against (Con) HP but it seemed a bit too dangerous...

Not original, I stole the idea from somewhere.

What does that say if the Mi-go don't want to harvest their heads.......https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/grin.png

I do like the idea of an implanted geas ( some disease with a time limit) to send the players on a quest, perhaps harvesting the head of some noble in Khromarium. This would allow them to get in all kinds of trouble.

I would compare them to refugee Romanovs, or members of some other aristocracy that no longer exists. They are still arrogant and have elevated ideas about themselves, but they're not very numerous and nobody else cares. I see them pretty much forced to deal with other races of men, and not very happy about it (much like those same Romanovs and other so-called "royals" when forced to deal with peons, peasants, and assorted hoi polloi such as ourselves).

There may also be some pure enclaves of Hyperboreans hidden in (for example) the Spiral Mountains, but I doubt those are very numerous. It could make for an interesting adventure - perhaps such an enclave has gotten their hands on an ancient magical or technological weapon and is planning to turn it on Khromarium ("If we can't have it, no one can!").

This is where I fall on the question.  Though many of my Hyperboreans also dwell in secret vaults under the old city section of Khromarium. They strive and plot for the ultimate return of their great race to rulership over Hyperborea.
