I found another good one (just need to remove some minor goblinoid encounters and fix the random encounter table: The halls of Tizun Thane (White Dwarf 18) by Albie Fiore. Planning to run this soon.

My first game of ASSH had players that where new to the xp for treasure found so they readily accepted my proposal; everyone gets equal xp and their share of treasure tied to xp worth (because selling a magic item is an adventure in itself). So a total of ~2400 gp worth of gold/gems a magic item worth 1000xp and one worth 200xp got divided in packages of 1000xp item plus 200gp, 200xp item plus 1000gp and 1200 gp.a bit metagamey but fair, I think.

I found a mistake in my excel sheet; the first letter of the names of the classes were capitalized and, as such, not recognized by the generator. So I fixed it (same link). I added a second stat-block that is straight 3d6 (as it should be ;) )

Great job! I added a little fix, though. It's now straight 3d6 as it should be ;)

I tried reading Lin Carter's 'Dragonrouge' but couldn't finish it. I left it in a "little free library" but it wasn't for me.

sheet 1 has the race kits, sheet 2 the class kits, sheet 3 some calculations and randomizer functions, the charactersheet will show the resulting character, pressing F9 will generate a new one. The fastest way to generate a group of characters is to press f9, select all, copy and <paste special>, values only in another tab or file and repeat.

It's pretty low tech and crude but it works great. I could of course change the sheet to use the original height, weight and age tables in stead of picking results from the samples from "Waifs" but that's for another time maybe.

Feel free to request additions or changes and thanks for giving me such a great set of sample character characteristics to start with !

I have been so free to put the info from the Waifs of Borea characters into an excel so one can create characters by pressing "f9", even more characters can be created now as I have it search within the confines of the race and gender table for all the attributes(chooses one of 12 separately for name, height age etc. within the Common Male table for instance). If people are interested I can upload it but I would like that "Blackadder23"/Ben and Jeff look at it first to see whether they want their work used and distributed this way.

Just got this from ebay; art by Jason Thompson. The drawing have a 90s indy comic look to me. It seems a straight adaption of the same story by C.A.S. but it does capture the vibe of ASSH. I would definately bring it to my assh games for new players to read and draw inspiration from.

ETA. I just realised that the artist that did the drawings also did those awesome walk-through maps of old-school D&D modules.

Below is what I will use at the character creation session. It's crude (with typo's) and doesn't make sense without the book and doesn't show abilities beyond 1st level. I'll check tomorrow whether the format works on this site as I'm going to bed now . Hope this is of use for you.

My stat rolling method of choice (and what I want to introduce in my game is) 4d6, drop lowest, down the line, swap 1 score if that will let you qualify for a specific class. Most players I play with have only done point buy and or stat array and part of what I want to introduce (together with the other old school elements of AS&SH) is the departure of character builds. Roll and interpret what you rolled; have scores in places because you roliled them, not because you chose them or dumped that stat. I want that character creation part of the game.

I know from experience how a character creation session can be tedious when we share one copy of the book (I'm sure there will be more if the campaign takes off). Also in the case of someone needing to make a new character mid-session being able to do the basics by themselves and fill in the details at the end (especially when I use my copy to run the game)

I'll create what I had in mind and post it here so you'll know what I wanted when I started the thread (not to say that there wasn't a lot of helpful info from all of you)

It is meant as a testing-the-water session where we check out if there is enough interest to make it a regular thing. I will use the excellent Waifs of Boreas file to generate some pre-gens (or even allow generation of pre-gens on the fly for late comers and spontaneous drop-ins).

As I know some will want to generate their characters themselves and we have now 1 book among us I was looking for a short hand description organised table of character classes and their 1st level stats (short description, prereqs, hd, armor/weapon/etc allowed, saves, xp to 2nd level, special abilities at 1st level etc.) so players can take those choices and jot them down on the sheet to be filled out with details from the book later.

I started making that myself and will post that here if that's appreciated.

I'm planning a game at my local FLGS with mostly newer edition d&d players (that all seem very interesting in the game). Do any of you have any player aid docs that could help with introducing the setting (what would the characters know) and some quick ref sheet for the base choices during character creation. As of now I'm the only one with the book which can make character creation take a long time so I'm looking for hand outs for players to digest (classes with prerequisits and 1st level abilities etc.) While they wait for the book to fill out the details on their sheets (I have the tables and gm sheets from the AS&S website)

Thanks!

I haven't found it in the rule-book (yet?) but are there any guidelines for what spells cast by NPCs would cost; provided the party has a good rapport with the caster of course and/or belong to the same faith in the case of clerical spells.

Main candidates would be spells like cure disease, remove curse, cure poison etc. for those parties that lack sorcerers that are high enough level to cast them themselves.

Hi, my name is Arjen, originally from the Netherlands but I moved to USA, Connecticut a few years ago. I started with red box D&D (Dutch translation ) in the late 80s, moved to 1st ed, 2nd edition, 3rd ,4th, 5th and since this year original white box. I still DM and play 5th and try to run oD&D when possible. I also played and ran CoC and Vampire.

I attended this years Shirecon and was able to play my first game of AS&SoH at Jeff's table. Since then I ordered the book and I'm trying to round up some players at my local gameshop (Elm City, New Haven) to start a campaign.

This might be a weird one but for inspiration and pure reading enjoyment I can really recomment the Donjon/Dungeon series by Lewis Trondheim and Koan Sfar.

Yes it is a comedic, parody of fantasy with anthromorphic characters (main character is an anthromorphic duck) but the world is compelling the storyline is great and the art a symbiont of old school d&d (Otis,Tramp etc) and cartoony.

There is lots to steal here. The premise and first impression might seem childish/funny d&d parody butit is very well written.

For tense and/or combat sequences I can recommend Alamaailman Vasarat, a Finnish klezmer jazz punk band. For a European folky sound: Corvus Corax (accoustic side project of members if the German metal band In Extremo). For some White Russian, droning, folk background: Troitsa.

Allow me some thread necromancy:

Prison of the Hated Pretender (http://dungeonofsigns.blogspot.com/p/pdfs-to-download.html), basically this site is a treasure trove of weird fantasy adventures

Caverns of Thracia, Judges Guild, Jennell Jaquays' adventures are awesome. Dark Tower would fit too I think but I haven't ran that myself. The main swaps would be mythologies/Gods

The Lichway, by Albie Fiore, White Dwarf #9. The susurrus is a great monster and very fitting for AS&SoH. Apparently this was also the first D&D adventure Terry Pratchett ever played.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll have to work on some descriptions of people from the R.E.Howard African Hyborian nations of Punt and Zembabwe and Shem.

Did anyone detail any African or Asian races for Hyperborea. I'm eying Spears of Dawn and such as rpg source material to insert into AS&SoH. R.E.Howard did establish Africa and Asia in his Hyborian map (Punt, Zimbabwe, Shem etc.) so it's not as if the source material is lacking.
