Yup.  You will never "un-see" it, either.

That's an understatement.

If only I could un-see to re-un-see it again.

A lot going on; low budget making a fantastic theatrical cut with literally using smoke, mirror...breaking the 4th wall, etc. don’t wanna spoil any more possible elements...

Quite a good analog for a Hyperporean house destroying itself from within due to its own machinations.

Cannot recommend this enough, at least one viewing of this, they just don’t make em like this anymore.

Appreciate your sources and opinion, as always.

I also found no historical examples of this 15/16 century Portuguese boat with oars.
My crew craves the minutiae more than I and I’m currently DMing by remote direction with the PCs rolling their own encounters on their way to the Anthropophagi of Xambaala...

Thank you for all of the maps/plans/views, they are very helpful for a guide.
I’m thinking a two deck open set up on the Main deck and the Gun Deck with three tight racks of oar benches on either side of a central walkway like seen in the Ben-Hur trireme scene.

They also wanted to outfit it with everything they could.
I limited them to three ballista: two stern, one bow.
No ram (rigged for fast sailing) and no Catapult (again, too much rigging and sails).
Definitely, carracks can be modified differently but this is Her Queen’s vessel and is built as decreed.

Hey Joe,
On an Amazon Carrack would you place the oars and oarsmen on the Main Deck?
(Players are currently on such a boat and this is an awesome resource to find!)
Thanks!

Cool stuff, though the glyptodonts are in fact a type of armadillo.  When their bones were first discovered, they were thought to be megatherium.  And the two species lived in the same areas and are found in the same Marx toy sets!

Interesting stats; I was thinking about the same for glyptodonts (AC: 2; 6 HD; 2-12 damage plus stun), though I was going a little tougher with cynognathus (4 HD), though this will play, for sure.
Moschops will be 5-6 HD; Sphenecodon around 6 HD; and maybe 8 HD for Macrauchenia.

This armored creature has a bony, turtle-like shell from which protrude short limbs, a blunt head, and a short spiky tail.

  • Stun for 1-3 rounds on a natural roll of 20 (save neg).

This 9'-long Pleistocene ground sloth was similar in shape to an armadillo, although it was very large and had a long tail. The end of the tail had a heavy ball set with spikes, much like the head of a morning star. In addition, this beast's body was heavily armored with a shell like a turtle's. A peaceful herbivore, Glyptodon was still dangerous to provoke.
~ Conversion from Dragon 137, "Into the Age of Mammals"

Nice execution on the stats (I was working on this idea a few years ago then I became a PC for the adventure instead of the DM), I’d love to get back to noodling around with this niche...

Scythian expatriates on the lam have oft sought safe havens or to obfuscate discovery through disguise or even disfigurement, only brutal wilds offer much reprieve to the patient and persistent Ixians. Many fleeing Scythian have sought solace in the desolate diamond dunes, few lived to see seasonal change,

round a tavern table or fireside, talk might turn - "so, ever hear the one about the Esquimaux Kthulhu monk that disembarked at a port of a Tlingit Kraken monastery?"

Note to Players & part-time DMs: reading further may SPOIL some fun surprises in and around Calencia...

The Invitation:
woe to those that interfere!
A monk entering Calencia will be soon confronted by the resident monks of the Kraken. Roughly every hour, or when exiting buildings, ONLY the errant monk will receive a singular attack coupled w/a specific question, 9 times total over the course of the day.

(change questions to fit vibe of home campaign; these are what I came up with on-the-fly):
Low level questions: Who are you? Where are you from? What do you want?
Mid level questions: What is your purpose? What do you fear? What has changed you?
High level questions: Why do you doubt? How is it life? When happens death?

If Kraken monk:*
--Surprises target AND hits: target knocked into water...
--Rolls a natural 19 or 20 (instead of stunning): target sails into water...
--Hits AND target fails a Dex test: target tumbles into water...

The Trial of the Nine Furies of Khalk-Xu:
at every threshold there is a choice on who you become
About the islet of the monastery dot dwarf osiers and pools fermenting offal. Stairs hewn in the  limestone wind up to large double doors (each 9'x18'), the right door is set with a smaller door (2'x5') on which hangs a 6" Kraken patina knocker; on the left door, midway hangs a much larger 3' Khalk-Xu patina knocker.

The petitioning monk must survive one attack a round for as many level as the monk has levels. Survive all 9 rounds to become Grand Master!
a linked tangle of arms, knees, elbows, legs; writhing, dashing, swirling, lashing
Drawing lots or cards to determine effect is more efficient than rolling dice in this case since each monk attacks but on

Loose end consolidating:

As usual, my crew is leaving the planned area (where I laid the groundwork for the festival) for Calencia. I'll be handing over the DM reigns after the fest, so let's not discuss The Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes (including curses and fanes, etc.), only focusing on Bealtainn with Calencia as the backdrop.

Note to Players: reading further may SPOIL some fun surprises in and around Calencia...

Here's what I have so far (I'll keep updating this with a final product once the crew finishes it):

Sunday; Day of Gathering:
At daybreak, on the richly carved Nine Drums of Khalk-Xu, 9 monks rhythmically beat and move eventually to betwixt The 18 Guardians (~20' totem poles).
This will chase off most, if not all, mundane threats w/i two miles yet some not-so-mundane threats may instead become attracted...

Burning of Black Seaweed at the bases of the bases of the totems

By midday the great gathering of fuel and building of the towering pyres upon the mudflats

some painting of bodies, some lotus, wine (color, type, flavor...?)

Lighting of the fires

Earthday; Day of Judgement:
Beating of drums continue yet only one at a time today

Garlands of mistletoe, holly and wildflowers are lain at the bases of The Guardians

Judgement (but how and who? monks, witches, council, consensus?)

some more nakedness and some more lotus but not near town...peeps be judging after all...

Keep the fires going...

Seaday; Day of Atonement:
Anointing of man, beast, fish, and fowl and especially the totems w/ fermented fish oils

Sink or Swim OR Drink then Drink!!! (mild to severe corporal punishment)

Swim the Gap (time to earn that "barbarian" mettle!)

At least one monk will continue the incessant drum beat all day...

Although salacious acts close to the village are likely not getting out of hand, yet...the urge-driven tumult is building and becoming increasingly bizarre and feral in the gulche

Read several years ago, maybe even of more interest currently...
Opening paragraph is what makes it of Hyperborean utility:

“...a city of scavengers. Just the names alone read now like some kind of exotic zoological catalogue: bone-pickers, rag-gathers, pure-finders, dredgermen, mud-larks, sewer-hunters, dustmen, night-soil men, bunters, toshers, shoremen...at least a hundred thousand strong.

Yes, emphatically yes.
The practical ‘yes’ for me and my crew will be some time in coming with several conditions and practices...working on some protocol with quick, tourney style of gaming - 4 hours or less; no book-work; DM only handles papers; Banditos.

Stay healthy everyone and hope to game again together someday! (even if it’s thru a screen...boo)

Another option would be the Michael Moorcock style of throwing you into some abysmal drink on a regular basis thus while choosing between life and death you cling to two things...the few that make it usually pick a weapon and their wits otherwise loosing all other accoutrements...one should be able to precious one item, imo...
[normal saves still apply for the favored item only exempt from expiration, neglect, or arbitrary culling and the like...]

Yes! Thank you for this, Handy!
I won’t start too strong on this immediately with my crew but I will ask them to roll for their falling into the pit traps of the (un)fun-house they are currently in... (front = weapons & pouches; back = pack & pride: crushing blow for the delicate items on the impacted side along with fall saves for the harden items on that side and normal fall saves for delicate items on the other/topside of the fall)
...or if anyone declares using a scroll, vial, glass, prism, sprinkles or a lil twig-n-twine when suddenly meleed or blasted/shot maybe a Dex test to keep the item safe otherwise save vs wrath du jour...
