Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Thanks!

How long do we wait before we decide Ynas Midgard showed up just to show up you guys and move on to the next question?

Let's say 24 hours (now passed) and then it defaults to prior questioner (in this case, you).

Work for everyone?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Works for me.

The handsome young pyromancer, pursued by his enemies through the Gal Hills, takes shelter in a sheepfold. There he makes the shepherd an offer, which, as these things often do, lead to coins being exchanged--but these are desperate times for our pyromancer. Question: What did he want from the shepherd and why?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Sheep bladders for the Flash spell.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

That's the deal! I guess the implied eroticism of the story wasn't enough to throw you off! Take it, man!

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Captain Kamerrohn just left port into the frigid waters around Vikland. Shortly into the voyage his man in the crow's nest spots a field of icebergs dead ahead. He starts wishing he had been sailing these waters a few years more than the 3 he's been navigating the Teetonic. Why?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Well, at a guess, because he started sailing with the new Celestial Cycle, meaning it's the Hare year, when whirlpools occur in the River Okeanos, which occupies the latitudes between Vikland and the mainland. I'm hoping the field of icebergs signal whirlpool trouble.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

I have no clue if that is actually a correct answer. Not what I was going for however.

I haven't read much on the Hyperborean cycle/geography much yet.

This has more to do with the captain than the tides/cycles of Hyperborea.

What? Me worry?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Because a captain's years spent at sea directly improve his chances of avoiding icebergs (see page 235 or, a more Hyperborean notation if I can pull it off correctly, VOL. III, ADVENTURE & COMBAT, icebergs).

(Also, sorry you guys had to wait for me; I wasn't near my computer during the weekend).

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

Ynas, that was the answer I was looking for.

Your turn now.

I just find it funny that there are rules for icebergs. :-)

It was fun to cobble that part of the rules together. It is eminently Hyperborean!

I think one of the guys in my group wants to play one!

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

I can't really think of anything else, so here it goes: assuming the standard 3d6-in-order attribute generation scheme, which is the rarest subclass available from the Player's Manual? How does it change if we add Alignment restrictions (assuming an even distribution of LE, CE, N, LG, CG)?

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

While I really don't want to figure out a trivia question (but it's good for me to read the damn books)...

Going on straight stats only.

I had though a barbarian was the least likely.

It requires 3 stats at 13 or better (about a 2% probability or something like that).

Now a Paladin is a good second guess but 3 stats requiring a 9 and 1 requiring a 15 gives a probability of about 4%.

However, my quick grep of the test missed the Berzerker, 2 stats requiring 15 each, .86% likely

Now to show my home work :-)

Rolling 3d6:
To roll a 9 or better is 74.0740%
To roll a 13 or better is 25.9259%
To roll a 15 or better is 9.2592%

Now the probability for an outcome, if I recall correctly, is just multiplying things out:

berzerker: .092592*.092592=0.008571427 aka .86%
barbarian: .259259*.259259*.259259=0.017426153 aka 1.74%
paladin: .74074* .74074* .74074*.092592=0.03762911 aka 3.76%

Probabilities courtesy of http://www.ogmiosproject.org/articles/stattables.html

However, if you roll in the alignment restriction which throws in an extra .2 (20%) then the Paladin is goes to: 0.007525822 aka .75%.

However, a berzerker has to be chaotic, so that gets multiplied by .4 which translates to 0.003428571 aka .34%

So, berzerker is the most pain in the ass character to roll up in hard core "3d6 in order motherfucker". :-)

Whew.

I think my math works out and is correct.

PS: Special shout out to Fire Lords and Death Soldiers, warlock subtypes, they have 3 stats at 12, probability 5.27%

Crap, missed the damn bard...running those stats now...I have a feeling this will be the winner

Bard: .74074* .74074* .74074* .74074*.092592=0.027876398 aka 2.79%

Throw in the alignment restriction gets that times .6 = 0.016725839 aks 1.67%.

So Berzerker still rarest it seems.

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

You've got the correct answer, gizmomathboy

I am generally fascinated by probabilities and whatnot, so apologies for the maths involved; however, I find it interesting how low the chances are for rolling a Bard or Paladin, let alone a Berserker.

Anyhow, you're up, gizmomathboy

Re: Hyperborea Trivia

No problems on the math :-)

I just had to find all the requisites for the classes and my quick and dirty search missed a couple.

I might not have an question until later today...that pesky work that pays you money thing is happening.

Using Method I, yes. We use Method III and Attribute Adjustment, so people play what they want.

I guess I am a bit of a pushover in this respect!

We roll 2d6 straight with automatic disease and anti-magic lice, at least according to J's stories at GaryCon.
