Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

The Carthaginians are my "pet" ancient people, so I'm taking this opportunity to inject them into the setting. You're welcome.

CARTHAGINIAN (New Minor Race)

A race of swarthily-complexioned people of average stature, with brown to black hair, variable eye color, and prominent noses. Their great city of Carthage on Old Earth was destroyed by the Romans, but a single refugee fleet sailed past Britain and into the Boreas. There have never been many Carthaginians in Hyperborea, and they are frequently mistaken for Greeks or common folk. Most Carthaginians work as sailors or merchants in large cities, but a few are found among the Moors of the Zakath Desert. Carthaginians typically worship Lunnaqua, whom they often refer to as “Tanit”. Kelts and Moors are considered allies, but Romans are regarded as racial enemies. Typical homelands are as follows:

* City-State of Khromarium (see “common” race)
* City-State of Yithorium (see Ixian race)
* Port Zangerios (see “common” race)
* Zakath Desert (see Moorish race)

Physique: Use standard procedure for height and weight, d50+34 eye color, d30+40 hair color, d30+50 complexion.

Language: Hellenic (Greek dialect)

Carthaginian Female Names (d12)
01 Alissa
02 Anath
03 Baalat
04 Batnoam
05 Cabiria
06 Dido
07 Melita
08 Nikkal
09 Shapash
10 Sophonisba
11 Tanith
12 Yezebel

Carthaginian Male Names (d12)
01 Bodo
02 Bomilcar
03 Bostar
04 Carthalo
05 Gisgo
06 Hamilcar
07 Hannibal
08 Hanno
09 Hasdrubal
10 Himilco
11 Mago
12 Marharbal

Carthaginians use epithets rather than patronymics.

Re: Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

What, no Barcids family/last names? ;-)

Well, you do have members of the Barcids listed (just not their family name)

What? Me worry?

Even "Barca" was actually an epithet applied to Hannibal's father Hamilcar. If their names were fully translated into English (consistent with other examples like "Hanno the Navigator" and "Hasdrubal the Handsome"), they would be "Hamilcar the Thunderbolt" and "Hannibal Son of the Thunderbolt".

Yeah, I dug in far enough after I posted to read that.

Now to dig up Punic epithets :-)

Re: Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

updated name and physique apps to have those pesky Carthaginians available as a choice.

I haven't checked the physique stuff that closely.

Nice!

I generated a bunch of physiques, and they all looked to be in the right range to me (medium brown to black hair, blue to brown eyes, olive to dusky complexion).

Re: Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

I'm sure predictably, I created a Waifs of the Boreas supplement with male and female Carthaginian race kits.

Re: Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

BA, I'm assuming you're using the epithets list.

I thought that might be the way to create names.

I'm considering adding a few for the Punic folks

  37: the Fair
  38: the Barcid
  39: the Great

Mostly from a brief read through of the Wikipedia entry for Cathage and some notable people mentioned in it.

Yes, because I'm lazy.

Some others that come to mind offhand are "Hanno the Navigator" and "Hasdrubal the Bald".

I still think you should just translate "Barca" as "Thunderbolt", since none of the other epithets are left in the original language ("Barca" is, as a point of very minor interest, the same as the Biblical name "Barak", which also meant "Thunderbolt"; ancient Semitic languages didn't use vowels). But handle it however you want!

Re: Carthaginians (New Minor Race)

Nice! Do you have a link to the name generator? I can find some of the others, but not that one. Or do you have a link to all of your apps?
