I've been thinking about doing a blog or vid on using Scrrivener as a referee tool. There really is no comparison, and I am not sure the developer knows what a potential market he has amongst role-players.

Please do!  I have Scrivener and have thought about using it this way.  Need to get back to that train of thought.

Rules Discussion » Running past foes » 1/13/2018 9:27 am

I'll offer this out of left field, brainstormed right now:

The Rules As Written (RAW) include "perception" in the list of what's covered with Wisdom (WS).  I would house-rule "Test of Wisdom" and  "Extraordinary Test of Wisdom" columns on the WS table on page 9 (identical to those in the Dexterity (DX), Strength (ST), and Consitution (CN) tables)*, then use them to see if the entities next to the gap detect the attempt.

If the enemy entities on either side of the gap are engaged, have them make an an Extraordinary test of Dex to notice the attempt.  If they are unengaged, but are within the "cloud" of a melee, they make a normal test of Wisdom to notice the attempt.  If they can be judged far enough from being engaged (.i.e., it can be argued that they have nothing to distract them from noticing the attempt), they automatically notice the attempt, which means the attempting entity must automatically suffer “attacks of opportunity” as it makes the attempt.

If the defenders notice the attempt, the attempting entity must make an Extraordinary test of DX to get through.  If not, a simple test of DX.

Failure of the attempting entity’s DX roll means the attempting entity stops at the line and is now engaged in melee with the defender(s) who succeeded in the notice attempt.  Success means the attempting entity made it through the gap.

Disclaimer:  I claim no deep expertise with the RAW and am coming at this from the perspective of another rules system (Mythras) that uses opposed roles for such things.  I expect those of you who are more familiar with the details of the AS&SH rules can find flaws in this approach that do not occur to me.  For instance, is “engaged’ even a thing in AS&SH?  I did a cursory look through the combat rules and did not see it.  (I wish AS&SH had a comprehensive index.)  I use the term because I read it being used in some of the other responses in this thread.  Same with Attacks of Opportunity.

I am eager to play the new game Illimat.   I backed it on Kickstarter because it is the idea and creation of the wonderful band The Decemberists.  The mechanics are very simple and I think it will provide a wonderful game experience.  Changing conditions, multiple paths to victory, sophisticated esthetics, cool cult vibe...

(Need to remember to perform my Society of Luminaries challenge...)

Anyone ever read the Helliconia books by Brian Aldiss?  There's a lot of great stuff about long seasons (I think centuries or at least decades long) and the changes society (and human physiology) goes through to adapt.   Lots of weird creatures too - I should re-read them with Hyperborea in mind.

I read them many years ago, still have them.   I agree that they are a good way to get a feel for how these long seasons might be handled in game.  I can still find impressions of his descriptions in what passes for my memory, especially the winter, though sans much detail at this time.

Ooops.  Forgot and didn't notice I'd already posted my answer.  /laugh/

Don't read this post!

Jeff may have insured the shipments, so don't throw away the packaging yet!

I should have said I've contacted Jeff about it with lots of pictures.  He's on the case.

Thanks for the reminder to preserve the evidence!

I received my book, shirt, and maps today.  The book is a lovely beast!

Unfortunately, the [long string of extremely strong expletives deleted] in the postal service badly mangled the map container, damaging both of my maps.  They are in one piece, but crinkled and creased to a painful (for me) degree.  Curse those fiends!  Curse them, I say!

I found, in my Inbox this morning, notices that shipping has been arranged and initiated for both the book and the maps in separate shipments, which makes sense given the special containers used for the rolled maps.

/chuckling at the mental image of Ghul duct-taping the book's box to the triangular map container/

General Discussion (Off-Topic) » What are you watching? » 10/12/2017 2:11 pm

I'm looking forward to the new season of Dirk Gently, which begins this coming weekend.
Just binge watched "American Horror Story: Roanoke".  Brilliant.  Not for the squeamish.
Loving "The Orville".

Great rule-set though my book says RuneQuest.   IMO the classes are the best thing about the AS&SH system as they flow straight from the Hyperborean paradigm.  I'd be interested too hear how it all works out!

I will create a thread in the campaign section when I get/make time to focus on the work.  We already started the Monster Island sandbox play a few weeks ago, the PCs arriving on the island after fleeing the mainland under circumstances not under their control and not knowing where the ship was heading.

I am in the process of starting a new campaign in Hyperborea, but will be using the Mythras rules instead of the AS&SH rules.  Setting details will be pretty much out of the new book (already grooving on the weather rules).  Sorcery will come from the exquisite Mythras-based "Monster Island" sandbox as will the campiagn's serpent and lizard folk.

I deeply respect Ghul's d20 rules set, but just am not into the d20 level/class sort of gaming right now.  If I ever return to it, AS&SH is going to be high on my list of rules for it.

Beautiful!

So, when are you going to launch the Kickstarter for 3rd Edition?

Swordsmen & Sorcerers » New Character Classes: » 10/04/2017 5:58 am

Thanks for these!  The first two look interesting.  I have not downloaded the rest because:

Downloading them invokes attempts by Agents of the Outer Dark to try to install a media player from poker.win, take me to a cannabis online ordering site (not that I'm against a consenting adult ordering cannabis if it is legal in their community), and others, I expect, if I continued to download your offerings.  (I'd have a mess to clean up if I wasn't using NoScript to block these things up front.)   The price of a free membership at MediaFire?

Again, thanks for sharing the fruit of your hard work!

General Discussion » What board games are you playing? » 7/22/2017 12:18 pm

The Thunderbirds Cooperative Board Game is a hell of a lot of fun.  It captures the ambiance of the old puppet TV show very well.  It is also very challenging to play.  Good stuff!

General Discussion (Off-Topic) » What are you listening to? » 7/19/2017 7:36 am

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard reminds me of Brain Ticket if they'd been more strongly influenced by metal.   I like it.
