Sorry man, I just don't know where you're going, I'm quite comfortable with the setting and whatnot, I was only asking for an answer, not an unsolicited opinion.
Thanks anyway, though (I'll take a break from here for awhile, didn't realize what was on the encounter table for this terrain).
Take care y'all!

Ugh, I used to game with DMs like that...no thanks.

The elegant rules I adore so I'll keep in simple and binary, since there would otherwise be too many grey areas (hitting w/ a Staff of the Magus, Automations fighting each other or an earth elemental, dæmons fighting ghosts)...

Not what I was asking but, in case you care: [magic] Staves...might be shod...treat as quartstaffs for purposes of combat; if not shod in metal, they deliver but 1d4.

Arbitrary outcomes should be avoided.

I'm not familiar with his other works but I do see how some might get bored with Valhalla Rising...
My only real criticism is that too bad it wasn't done in a Scandinavian tongue w/o subtitles, for the most part, the few words spoken are easily understood in any language.

I've added this to Snake-man priests' of Yig options when casting Serpent Charm: or up to 1d6 Asp-bolts or Viper-bolts that can be launched from bows/xbows.

That should be it for this post (all pertinent info is now in the first post), so if anyone see any mistakes, doesn't  add up or is unclear, please lmk!
And, thanks for all the help y'all!! can't wait to 'sample' my crew...

'Tis playing atm on IFC.

One of my favorite movies, even!
Also, might be one of the best films for an analogue to Hyperborea's bleak atmosphere.

I don't think of owlbears as all that bipedal I guess? Sort of semi-bipedal, if that makes sense. So I'd probably not have them able to do it in my Hyperborea. That said, I'd probably keep the snake-people attack (1 [bite or weapon]) and have them able to either bite for 1d6 or claw for 1d6 per round.

Thanks for the damage feedback, I'll go with that (except Monk Snake-man which can deal full attacks and fully move as that biped, w/i reason since I love giving monsters special stuff I'd never give PCs).
About owlbears' posture: those lobster claws weren't made for walking and the description states them being upright, 8-10' tall instead of long/length, so I've been running them as always bipedal yet bird like at eating and swivelnecking.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty (lil' polish and kibosh) but wanted to ask for opinions the effects of Alter Self, specifically for when it's Snake-mans, here's what I have (basically half dmg & move, otherwise based on the Snake-man stat...'cept dex, but not kinda...):

Snake-man as Owlbears (possibly):
Size:L, Move:20, Dex:10
AC:5, HP&saves&FA:same
CA&TA:n/a
Attacks:1d6 claw or beak
8-9' tall looking 500-1500 pounds...ya know, a family group grubbing for magic...

This is immensely helpful for my current situation (I've been tediously building customized tables as my crew moves about...) especially with the environmental encounters (I still need to take the time to reread the monsters' descriptions to list the possible causes for their monstrous condition - only russet mould begetting spore-man comes to mind atm)!
My gratitude, BA23, truly amazing!!

Off the top of my head I'd allow non weapon magical items to be used as weapons, to hit creatures if they could only be hit by magic,  if the items could conceivably do damage - of course a trip to the item saving rolls would need to be in order as you say.  If the description said +2 or higher I'd be stricter though the use (and potential breakage) of the more powerful non weapon magic items might be allowed (or even encouraged - I hear full potions make great sling bullets!).  I am intrigued by the +0 weapon concept but Handy hasn't quite converted me to that heresy yet!

Nice, Eli - definitely "encourage" them to use those potions as sling bullets (lmk the results)!!!

Unless I missed it, there doesn't seem to be any "+2 or greater" to hit monsters, and since I'm a low magic world, I'll keep magical requirements binary (needs anything magical to hit it, otherwise mundane will do) with 1/2 damage for unintended magic item usage (guess this will be my first departure from RAW).

The difference is indeed in the "+" as far as my campaign is concerned. I would allow some of what lige mentions above, the improvised weapons (though they would be subject to breakage), but if the requirement is "+1 or better", than +0 is not enough to penetrate the creature's otherworldly, netherworldly, or sorcerous defenses.

Thanks, Jeff!
So there is a qualifiable magical requirement difference when fighting Mummies (+0 to hit) versus fighting a Minotron (+1 to hit)...

...the real question I have is a bit opaque, so I guess it's:

Is there any actual difference regarding the magical requirements to hit in the various descriptions?
"+1 or better weapon to hit", "harmed only by silver or magical weapons", "unharmed by non-magical weapons; magical weapons inflict half damage", etc

Part Two: if a magic weapon is +0 does it qualify for the aforementioned?

And, thanks again, guys!

But your way is cool too. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/smile.png

Desperate times inspire desperate measures!
I never concern myself whether the party can harm random encounters that they roll up, such as when they faced two gargoyles as 1st lvls w/o any magic weapons, so anything and everything might come into play...

Using an item that is weapon-like (rods, shields, gauntlets, even staves I figure...)? Sure! 1/2 damage and make a Class 3 save.
Using a non-weapon in a weaponized way (hurling a brazier, kicking with slippers...) Good Luck! If hit: 1 pip of damage and make a Class 2 save.

I like giving them options with proper consequences while allowing every horror and stalk ample opportunity for introduction with the party (pulling no punches, full RAW as we understand it)...

probably should've just kept the question about +0 weapons...

Hi y'all!
I've been mulling over this idea for a bit and wonder how others might rule...?

For many this might never be a real consideration if you're outside Handy's AOE nonetheless, what if one hits a Lycanthrope (silver or magic weapons) with a Rod of Rulership or Staff of Healing or a +0 Holy Water Sprinkler (Morningstar w/ vial insert)
I'd give full damage in these cases.

How about the same items vs a Minotron (+1< weapon)?
I'm now inclined to give 1/2 damage in this case.

Same vs a Mummy (magic weapons deal 1/2)?
Rod and Staff does only 1 pip of damage per hit + str mod (also, magic shields, gauntlets, etc.) while +0 Morningstar inflicts 1/4 damage.

Non-weapon magic items used for melee should make Class 3 saves after each hit.

Nice work, Michael!
Any reason these wouldn't also be in the Diamond Desert?
I'm prepping for Ghost Ship and would like to add them to the mix, if that's cool with you?
If not, I have this idea about a StingBot 1000 that happens to be the exact same write-up...

I want to get some ideas out pertaining to this area so this is a very rough draft atm...

Welcome to the Diamond Sandbox of Death, Dearth, Doom, and Death, some more!

Ixpats:
Scythian expatriates on the lam have oft sought safe havens or to obfuscate discovery through disguise or even disfigurement, only brutal wilds offer much reprieve to the patient and persistent Ixians. Many feeing Scythian have sought solace in the desolate diamond dunes, few lived to see seasonal change, for most luck and life expired soon after the last drops from their water skins, yet some did persevere...

Think Inuit cum Bedouin, riding giant armadillos (Glyptodons) each towing on skids an empty shell.
http://i65.tinypic.com/8yg6k1.png

Total Ixpat population: c. 800 scattered and roving.

Roughly 60 to 90 family groups, limited in their size by the number of dominated Glyptodons they husband. Each Glyptodon towing a shell which may easily house six adults yet twelve is possible in emergencies (think clown car packed). Thus, many families are about six members per armadillo with a three shell family seemingly the goal and the practical maximum since families greater than twenty ofttimes split thru rightful and occurring rites.

Tradition dictates comity when two families share shade;
posterity requires the two to smote the third on approach.

Likely levels for # in group:
6=5/2/2/1/0/0
12=6/4/3/3/2/2/1/1/1/0/0/0
18=7/4/4/3/3/3/2/2/2/1/1/1/1/1/0/0/0/0
...

Other Reclusians:
The Beta-Kelts
Gaul - 8th lvl berserker man
Chiad - 7th lvl barbarian woman
Bain - 8th lvl barbarian woman
...
StingBot 1000s

I believe everything is as ready as it can be for my crew...until we start gaming tomorrow and they decide to trailblaze somewhere I haven't given a spark of thought (as they did last week when midway through the Brittlestone Parapets they about-faced and trekked toward the mountaintop fane, ingrates!)...

ill probably repurpose this post for building upon whatever spring-harebrained goal they'll set themselves on...
