Players would be spending gold, not xp, to bank experience points for their next character. The way I see it, there would have to be many equally desirable options for spending gold to make it work.

My bad, I thought they were banking actual xp and paying gold for the privilege.

Part of the genius of the xp system that with increasing amounts needed at each level the new character will be reasonably close in level to the party very quickly.

As far as investing in other things I have never encountered players that wanted to sacrifice xp to anything but level gain.  Just my experience so to speak.

Holy crap! What a fun idea!  I had toyed with a menu holder with a few pages of pertinent info as well as a character sheet for players at con games.  Ran out of time.

Not sure why my immediate reply did not post a few days ago, but I wanted to thank you for the great response WWD. Your original screen was well received, so hearing your input for the official screen is very valuable to me. I have printed out many of the tables , cut them out, and have been doing some experimentation with arrangement. Meantime, the full-bleed, panoramic art piece that will be on on the players' side of the screen is in progress. As we get closer to fulfillment of the last Kickstarter, this project will go to the front of the line. Right now, we are looking at a Kickstarter campaign that will feature these three basic components:

- Players' Manual in softcover. It will be the finest, most durable softcover you can imagine. Not perfect binding, but smyth-sewn glue binding, with great paper stock and thick cover with gatefold flaps.
- Referee's Screen. A four panel landscape screen measuring about 44 inches long by 8.5 inches wide.
- Player Character Folder. A 9 x 12-inch folder containing booklet-style character sheets.

I'm glad you are doing the landscape. I never get to sit down during a game because I can't see over the screen I use.... The four section screen will also fit around my work area a bit better (44" is good!)

The description of the players manual and the character folder are neat and increasing my anticipation of the next KS!!

Interesting difference.  The spell includes humanoids as well so the distinction narrows somewhat. I'm not sure how humanoids are defined in AS&SH?

I would tend to be very strict with only very slight variation on the human base.

Personally I would define a "humanoid" in AS&SH as any normal, living, basically bipedal creature. So ape-men, orcs, vhuurmis, snake-men, minotaurs, etc. would all be affected. Undead, automata, and bipedal daemons (for example) would not be.

Not to be argumentative but would that also include Trolls, Troglodytes, Yeti, Ogres, etc. Or have we wandered into "monster" territory.  From your list I would omit minotaurs, and snake-men. I'm not sure I can define exactly why, but I feel as though mino's are monsters and snakes are too alien to be "humanoids".

This spell is so cool in the Witch's arsenal!  The description is very weird fantasy!  Unfortunately it seems to pale in comparison to the boring old Hold Person spell in duration, effect, and range....(that witches get at the same level)

Then trying to think out of the box how would this great spell be used out of combat.  Perhaps the spell could be used at a funeral, on a noble that was trying to fake their sadness at the passing of a rival.  A ruined reputation is great for punishing an enemy that you cannot reach otherwise!

I had a great player at a con use this spell on the big bad causing him to collapse in front of a giant spider. The villain spent his final moments laughing hysterically as he was eaten alive.

Any other spells out there that may not seem as useful that would have yet undiscovered uses?

On old Earth a geothermal heating unit pulls from a pretty consistent 55 degrees. Hyperborea has a slightly cooler sun and a completely different "core" dynamic.  Not being a geologist or scientist I would use a slightly cooler 50-55 degrees.  Wear your coat in the dungeon, but still not as bad as the top of Mt. Vhuurmithadon!

In Colin Chapman's useful AS&SH Name Generator, he writes "Of the great Hyperborean families of antiquity, only sixteen remain, hotbeds of intrigue and rivalry, tenuously united only by their sense of superiority to the sub-men." That sparked my imagination as I was campaign-building and I decided to flesh out House Vheez for the needs of my players characters. Has anyone else developed the Hyperborean families?

House Vheez. Driven low by a series of calamitous events over successive generations including, but not limited to, madness, loss at sea, daemonic possession, duels and lotus overdose, House Vheez is currently the least influential and poorest family of the Great Sixteen. For reasons of ancient custom and modern politics too tedious to elaborate upon, the only way to restore the family fortune is through strategic marriage or a massive influx of wealth. Consequentially, enterprising young members of House Vheez gravitate towards adventuring careers.

Since they have the least to lose, House Vheez deviates from tradition more than any other family (e.g. they will cooperate with the "lesser races" if need be) but appear as hidebound and eccentric as the rest of their race to outsiders. The family is aristocratic, eccentric, macabre, erudite, and exceedingly proud even in decline.

DM Notes: House Vheez was designed specifically for the needs of player characters. A cash-poor but noble PC adds legitimacy to a common murder-hobo band while being highly motivated to adventure for money. A Hyperborean hailing from a lower-status family doesn’t stretch credulity when they adventure with the "lesser races" as equals out of necessity. The family offers information and adventure hooks in exchange for cash. I imagine them somewhat like a Hyperborean Addams Family.

I agree. Though I have never had a Hyperborean Character in my game I have often pondered the reasons for their leaving the

I'm talking about spells that have a duration greater than instantaneous. Of course, range applies. We're assuming the target of the charm is within the AoE of dispel magic

In re-reading the spell Dispel is instantaneous and probably could never disrupt a spell, only counter the lingering effects.  If Dispel wins initiative the effects are gone once cast then the enemy spell is cast and the effects applied. In reverse the enemy spell is cast and effects applied then Dispel can remove lingering effects.  I don't see a dispel of an instant attack spell being possible?

If the snake-men win initiative, the snake-man casts first, but depending on the circumstances, I still might allow the dispel magic to negate the effect of the spell.

Please elaborate...do you mean if the snake-man casts some type of creeper spell - like Cloudkill???

I would think Charm Person might still be initiative dependent.

The Charm is cast first and the character gets charmed.  The dispel then removes the effect if within the area of effect.  The spell is instantaneous but the magical effects linger and may be dispelled.

Could a Dispel Magic spell be held to dispel a Fireball Spell, assuming the character dispelling won initiative?

My players particularly like the Symbols of the Gods on the front of the screen I use.

Thanks!
