I can speak to comparisons betwixt AD&D and BECMI; I'll leave it to our esteemed members to draw comparisons to AS&SH. AD&D and BECMI adventures are fairly equivalent at low levels. I've never had a problem running a level 1–3 Basic adventure with AD&D rules. At higher levels they diverge a bit more. An old DRAGON had a good comparison chart. Basically, levels 1–8 were more or less equivalent in both games, but levels 9–12 in AD&D ("name level") are more like levels 10–19 in BECMI.

I'm not entirely sure if it's been mentioned but there were entries in the Player's Manual where a piece of equipment price was given as "5 cp", which is awkward, considering how 5 cp equals 1 sp. It's only a minor issue, but it still makes calculating leftover money after character creation a tiny bit more difficult than it normally is. Not sure if it's addressed in 2nd ed.

All such references already have been converted to sp, but thanks for pointing it out.

The intent was for the clay, iron, and stone automata (as well as the bronze automaton, a.k.a. minotron) to be immune to all spells except those specified as affecting each automaton type. An iron automaton is unharmed by magic missiles, for instance, whether from a sorcerer, a scroll, a wand, or a ring. Does that answer your question?

The only thing I'd do differently is treating high-level NPCs rare by determining their level the following way:

D12
1-3 level 1
4-6 level 2
7-8 level 3
9-10 level 4
11 level 1d4+4
12 level 1d4+8

FWIW, here's what I'm using for random NPC levels:

d% Roll   Level
 01–32         1
 33–48         2
 49–59         3
 60–67         4
 68–72         5
 73–78         6
 79–83         7
 84–88         8
 89–91         9
 92–94       10
 95–97       11
 98–00       12

Judging from the "What Are You Playing?" polls I ran in Swordsmen & Sorcerers last month, everyone's campaigns seem to have topped out in the 6–8 range.

From the depths of the Black Gulf, your cries have been heard! Random encounter tables for both wilderness encounters and dungeon levels will be included as appendices in the Second Edition hardback.

Jeff will correct me if necessary, but here's my understanding: For attacks with class 1 or 2 melee weapons, no surprize roll is needed; the target only need be "unaware" of the attack. (The referee could rule that a target in the midst of melee with the assassin's companions might be unaware of the assassin hiding and moving silently behind him.) If the attack hits (with a +4 bonus), check the Assassination table for chance of instant death. Even if instant death does not result, normal backstab damage applies, with a multiple based on the assassin's level.

Assassins also can assassinate with a missile weapon, but only at short range, and only against a target who is not engaged in combat and does not expect danger. In other respects, the attack is resolved as above.

Hi, Ironwolf, and welcome to the boards! You'll be pleased to know that one of the minor rule changes in the forthcoming Second Edition will be to make the monk's empty hand attack WC 0 for all purposes. Two-weapon fightingalso will include a table to illustrate better the penalties for each weapon.

I enjoyed it. I give it a B+. It was suitably dark, and it had plenty of cool moments, but it just didn't move me emotionally as much as the "saga" films.

In an effort to learn how different campaigns have progressed in the four years since AS&SH™ was published and to measure the impact of any potential rule changes* in Second Edition, I'm launching a series of polls to determine what classes and levels are being played. Please tell me the highest-level character of each class in your current campaign. Thanks for your feedback.

* Please note that our design goal is for 99.9% compatibility with the original boxed set. Any changes will be minimal, but if we learn that (for instance) no one has played a witch past 8th level, then there'd be no real harm in introducing a new rule that states a 9th-level witch weighs the same as a duck**.

** No such rule is being considered at this time.
