It's time for daily encounters! Today your players are aboard ship in the middle of the Hyperborean Sea.

Merchants on carrack – 8 merchants (1st level thieves), 14 heavy crossbowmen, 18 halberdiers, Hebbalvalith (2nd level fighter in command of guards), and 50 sailors equipped as marines. 40,000 g.p. worth of trade goods.

Quite a random haul if the PCs are evil, and strong enough to sack that merchant ship.

Not think that would stop Conan and I sure he was not Evil; but then!?!

Alignment is always a contentious subject. Certainly Conan is depicted as a violent sociopath in Howard's stories (much like Achilles, for example, and very unlike King Arthur). I personally would classify him as Chaotic Neutral (in AD&D terms) at best, at least prior to becoming King of Aquilonia. If someone wanted to make an argument for Chaotic Evil, I would be willing to listen; only the trace of a moral code Conan shows (not mistreating women, for example, and generally keeping his word) would cause me to hesitate to classify him as Evil. The issue of his piracy is somewhat mitigated by the fact that many or most of his victims are themselves Evil - other pirates, Stygians, Zamorans, and so forth. If you were to hold a gun to my head and force me to give Conan an AS&SH alignment, I guess it would be Chaotic Good (because he does have a moral code, and doesn't rape and murder - or even cheat - everybody he meets).

In any event, NPC pirates are Chaotic Evil in the AS&SH rules (and for that matter, in the AD&D rules), so I personally would assess an alignment violation for non-Evil PCs who engaged in random piracy (though privateering against Evil targets such as Ixians would be okay). But I strongly encourage you and every other DM to handle the specifics of alignment however you please. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/smile.png

I would agree with Chaotic Good.  I generally don't li

Yeah, like I said, an unnecessary exercise for sure, but fun none-the-less (to me at least). I agree, though; I see the obelisks as providing "life support" for Hypeborea and artificially providing for all of the mechanisms no longer provided from Old mother Earth (i.e. gravity, magnetic field, atmosphere, etc.).

Of course, perhaps the obelisks are just the "tip of the iceberg" so to speak. They could be the only surface manifestation of the enormous otherworldly craft that had lain buried in Earth's crust from Aeons past (how's that for a Hyperborean underside!).

Another crazy idea I had was that Hyperborea is actually upside down. Hyperborea as it existed on Old Earth actually lies in desolation on the underside of the realm, and the current surface is New Hyperborea, once being the underside of Old Earth's polar crust.

Haha!  No its an amazing bit of analysis!  I like the flipped Earth theory!  That would make a good thread, the conspiracies surrounding the exact nature of Underborea.  There may be further hints in the 2nd edition...

Been playing D&D and similar, on and off, since '79. Love AS&SH for many reasons, but mainly because it reflects my tastes in reading - there's just something about the Olde Tales that resonates with me.

Welcome aboard!  I agree that the style and flavor of the game reflects the "old ways".

I originally posted this over at Fin's ODD74 board, but I thought it might get more use here.

It's a character creation reference sheet for beginning players. It's aimed at folks new to RPG's and/or AS&SH. I limited it to the core four classes so that newbies aren't overwhelmed by all of the choices right out of the gate.

It's designed to be printed out 2-sided on legal sized (8.5" x 14") paper, then folded in half so it fits in the 1st edition box. Sorry about the cross-site post; I don't have a file hosting service account.

Enjoy!

Welcome and bearing gifts too!! Awesome!!

I agree PCs would probably only have one (or at most two or three, if the dice were really against them) random encounters in a day. The reason I'm rolling 13 is to have a greater chance of seeing some cool stuff at each location. Consider it a week's worth prerolled, in case your players ever go there. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

Daily encounter time! Now your players have made the probably unwise decision to travel to the Ixian capital of Fazuum, City of the Snake-Worshiping Necromancer-Slavers. Just how much trouble will they find there?

Sleet storm
8 drunks (destined to end up in the hold of a slave ship)
Fever (some hideous tomb-sickness, no doubt)
1 draught horse
34 corpse-fattened rats
1 sacred giant cobra! (slay it at your peril)
Apama (11th level necromancer!) with 7 ghoul minions
Tirgatao (1st level assassin) posing as an escaped slave
8 more drunks (make room for more slaves!)
10 bandits – thugs waylaying travelers, at least until the snakes get them
90 shackled slaves guarded by 8 light infantrymen, whose leader is Phoros (10th level fighter!). Are any of the PCs Spartakos?
Lustaiyon, 12th level (!) Neutral warlock, accompanied by 5th level apprentice Ganos and 7 5th level heavy infantrymen. Will this wrecking crew be friend or foe to the PCs?
1 domesticated aurochs

Xathoqqua's ears! More like "City of the High-Level NPCs". http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/shocked.png

Lots of color encounters in there that may never lead to immediate conflict but may lead to later adventure.

Funny you should say that. I've got most of the encounter table stuff automated (at least the big chunks).

I don't have the terrain for all locations tailored for all of them, and I don't have the some of the sub-tables/encounters working but I can do this:

Select location:

Give me a 'D'! Give me an 'A'! Give me an 'I'! Give me - I'm not going to spell the whole thing. In this episode, your players have journeyed to the grassy shores of Esquimaux Bay, where the natives are hardly evil Kthulhu-worshippers at all. What will the PCs encounters there?

22 red deer
4 giant komodo dragons!
6 ground sloths
Hunting party of 15 bowmen and 10 dogs, led by Karpok. They haven’t bagged any game yet.
13 wolves
1 black bear
3 boars
16 red deer
Hunting party of 13 bowmen and 12 dogs, led by Karpok (the same party, minus a couple of casualties and plus a couple of dogs?) They haven’t managed to bag any of the plentiful game.
8 giant rats
12 red deer
18 red deer
17 red deer (okay, this is just getting silly)

So the answer was: a lot of red deer and some inept hunters (who barely even cavort by night in honor of the squid-god). Onward to more fantastical areas!

Though there are lots of encounters most if not all would ignore a group of healthy adventurers on the move. I would never roll this many in a day but if automated it would be fun to say "the hunting looks like its good today." or the esquimaux stop to sell you furs / coats.  This makes a day more interesting as it is there tends to be a daily encounter vs this kind of variety.  Good Stuff!

It's time once again for daily encounters! In this episode, your players have boldly ventured into Death Valley, the frozen rift which is said to open into Underborea itself. Will they meet any daemons there?

1 large animal skeleton
19 cave-men
4 giant elk
Fever
3 boars
22 abominable snow-men!
110 reindeer
Thin ice (over 40’ pit)
12 aurochs
16 abominable snow-men!
2 giant bats (night only)
Thin ice (over 20’ pit)
Deep freeze!

No daemons, but 22 abominable snow-men has "TPK" written all over it. Yeesh.

Particularly if the party has any females.....

We played Talisman as a family a lot when the kids were younger.  My wife loved getting to the center first and yelling "ADMIT DEFEAT!" every round.

Its hard to beat Khromarium with its jaded city environs juxtaposed to haunted old city goodness!

Most of my adventures have taken place in the Fields of Vol and the Lug Wasteland.  Some Stonebrook mysteries and a trip to the surface of Phobos. The Plain of Leng for its harsh elemental cold and of course Yetis. A few adventures in the Gal Hills as well.  Lots of areas to cover so little time.

I changed the structure of my offerings a little bit. Instead of one four-hour Foolsgrave game from 12-4 on F/S, I'm doing three two-hour sessions from 12-2,2-4,4-6 on F/S. My intent is to create a more flexible offering, where someone who wants to play all afternoon can do so but someone who only has a couple hours to spare can also do so. If it works like I'm hoping, I may do this at Gary Con as well. We'll see.
