Should we discover an erratum in ASSH2, should we post it here, or will you be starting a new thread?

Allan.

Allan, I’m going to naively believe that a new errata thread won’t be necessary. If you simply must burst my bubble, then please feel free to post any new findings in this thread. As usual, everything good about the new book is Jeff’s work, and anything wrong with it is mine.

Is it an oversight or is the Huntsman's Ambusher ability not supposed to grant the bonus to the rest of the party after preparation (like how the Barbarian's and the Ranger's ability work)?

Not an oversight; the huntsman’s ambusher ability is slightly different. He’s a little more opportunistic, and also more likely to work alone.

(For those curious about such matters, a check of my archives shows that I added that ability to the huntsman in draft 9 of VOL. I in April 2016; by the end, VOL. I saw 55 drafts. I don’t recall if I added it on my own, or at Jeff’s direction.)

Have you read the bit in the Druid (Cleric) subclass description about the Druidic Triumvirate?

If you do a combat withdrawal, the opponent has a chance to advance after you for free, correct? What if they have a lower MV than you?

I'm not sure that the opponent advances "for free"; I think he's still limited by his MV. If he can't catch you, then you can escape the melee.

Grimmshade wrote:

Does the Bola (and similar weapons) impose the Hindered penalty when held fast by it? Can a held opponent choose to attack rather than break free?

I'd say the bola victim was prone, not hindered. We should have clarified. The victim certainly can choose to attack or take some other action rather than escaping.

Grimmshade wrote:

Are things like drawing a weapon considered an action?

I'd say no, since "Sheathe weapon, draw other weapon" is listed as an example of a potential action. At worst, I might force a combatant who needs to draw his weapon before attacking to strike in phase two.

Grimmshade wrote:

If an enemy runs past an adjacent squarer on the way to attack someone else, etc., can you take a free attack?

Not a free attack, but I'd certainly allow a combatant who'd declared his intent to swing at one target to change that target if a new one moves into striking range. For example, a thief with 40 MV wants to run past an enemy fighter to reach some other target. Because he's running, his movement is doubled; he'll cover 40 feet in phase one and 40 feet in phase two. If the fighter's side has initiative, and if the first half of the thief's movement puts him in striking range, then the fighter can attack the thief in phase two before the thief completes his movement.

Tweak the game to taste, of course, but I think there's a good reason the warlock doesn't have an illusionist option and the legerdemainist doesn't have a necromancer option.

And what reason is that? Not trying to be snarky/combative/whatever; I'm assuming that you know something we don't http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

Sorry, I should have elaborated. I think the illusionist option fits the legerdemainist better, as a sneaky and deceptive character archetype. In the same vein, animating a small army of skeletons and zombies to do one's bidding seems more fighter-like than thief-like; thus the necromancer option for warlocks, but not for legerdemainists. Again, individual referees should feel free to make different design decisions for their own campaigns. I'm just expounding on what I presume to be Jeff's reasoning. Jeff and I long have operated by Crowley's maxim, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law". http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

Howdy, Caveman. Here are my mostly unofficial answers:

1) I think population figures generally include only adults.

2) I suggest orcs reach maturity in their early teens, much like men. (They are, after all, descended from men.) Of course, they're irredeemably Evil from birth and should be slaughtered on the teat. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

3) Class names generally are spelt in full. The only "official" abbreviations are for the schools of sorcery: mag = magician, cry = cryomancer, ill = illusionist, nec = necromancer, pyr = pyromancer, wch = witch, clr = cleric, and drd = druid.

4) I do not believe bird-men have arms.

Values, no, but we've added some expanded tables for gems and jewellery (plus many new magic items!).

It was actually David Prata's work on AS&SH 1E that convinced me editing in fact was super cool, and since then I've been doing it part time (very part time, but still). So, in a way, thank youguys ;)

That's great! I'm sure that will make Mr. Prata smile.

Sorry if this has been discussed. I did a search but didn't come up with anything.

How does everyone use the Secondary Skills? To inform what Characters can do? Do you use any sort of roll?

My wife will be making a Beastmaster (which doesn't exist as a class, but I'll just go with Ranger and give her a war dog or wild cat of some type.) She'll take Animal Handler, and I'm just trying to think of how to incorporate it.

I come from the days of oD&D, but my old school GM skills have gotten rusty in the mire of modern RPG's that I've just emerged from.

Welcome to the boards, Grimmshade! Methinks your wife will like the new Huntsman subclass, coming soon to a hardcover near you. http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png

I can speak to comparisons betwixt AD&D and BECMI; I'll leave it to our esteemed members to draw comparisons to AS&SH. AD&D and BECMI adventures are fairly equivalent at low levels. I've never had a problem running a level 1–3 Basic adventure with AD&D rules. At higher levels they diverge a bit more. An old DRAGON had a good comparison chart. Basically, levels 1–8 were more or less equivalent in both games, but levels 9–12 in AD&D ("name level") are more like levels 10–19 in BECMI.

I'm not entirely sure if it's been mentioned but there were entries in the Player's Manual where a piece of equipment price was given as "5 cp", which is awkward, considering how 5 cp equals 1 sp. It's only a minor issue, but it still makes calculating leftover money after character creation a tiny bit more difficult than it normally is. Not sure if it's addressed in 2nd ed.

All such references already have been converted to sp, but thanks for pointing it out.

The intent was for the clay, iron, and stone automata (as well as the bronze automaton, a.k.a. minotron) to be immune to all spells except those specified as affecting each automaton type. An iron automaton is unharmed by magic missiles, for instance, whether from a sorcerer, a scroll, a wand, or a ring. Does that answer your question?

The only thing I'd do differently is treating high-level NPCs rare by determining their level the following way:

D12
1-3 level 1
4-6 level 2
7-8 level 3
9-10 level 4
11 level 1d4+4
12 level 1d4+8

FWIW, here's what I'm using for random NPC levels:

d% Roll   Level
 01–32         1
 33–48         2
 49–59         3
 60–67         4
 68–72         5
 73–78         6
 79–83         7
 84–88         8
 89–91         9
 92–94       10
 95–97       11
 98–00       12
