Hey measuredrums, that's my MCC game you're in.
I'm looking forward to meeting some of the Hyperboreans there.  I wasn't able to get into an AS&SH game, but I'm running Ghost Ship and saw a couple familiar names in the sign up.

Looking forward to your MCC game under_score. I'll actually being playing with three buddies of mine that were part of my old game crew from back in the 80's. We've all semi-recently reconnected as far as gaming goes, and decided this trip to Gary Con will become an annual reunion to relive the glory days (we all live in different places now). We're playing in 4 events together; your MCC game, also an AS&SH, Top Secret:NWO, and a CoC game. Should be a blast.

p.s. I may be running a bit late to your MCC game (hopefully not), I'll be finishing up an AS&SH game right beforehand ... I'll boogie over asap though ... your game is B Forum (Back), the AS&SH is A Forum (Back), so they're pretty close.

Looking forward to maybe meeting a few of you fine folks.

I would say that the rules do not "seem" to indicate a free attack from your enemy, they implicitly indicate your enemy gets a free attack. Per the Fighting Withdrawl (Backpedaling) rules on p. 254 (AS&SH 2nd Ed.):

"If, however, a combatant attempts to run away or flee from a hostile situation, he suffers a −2 AC penalty, and each adjacent enemy gains a free and immediate attack (see p. 242: Combat, attack modifiers). If chase is given, movement rates should be compared."

Seems pretty clear ... But, as always, defer to your GM's judgment on this.

Using Eldritch Tales rules to combine to AS&SH.

My plan involves taking PC's from an actual Call of Cthulhu game/campaign (yet to be started) and porting those characters over to ASSH/Hyperborea once their characters find their way beyond the North Wind. The conversion between the Chaosium Basic Roleplay system and ASSH/old school D&D is rather painless (the conversion guide in d20 Call of Cthulhu is helpful too) ... Haven't had a chance to look thru Eldritch Tales yet.

Heck yeah man, great idea ... That's what I really love about the Hyperborea setting, you could literally insert any adventurer from any historical period of Earths past (or ... future!?!) and have a go at it ... I've actually been contemplating an adventure, and/or campaign, where certain 1920's Earth "Mythos Investigators" are transported to the land beyond the North Wind via a spell/ritual from an ancient insanity blasting tome!

Warning! Potential Spoilers ahead (in regards to the 'Rats in the Walls' adventure)

We finally had session #2 of our campaign a week ago, and were able to finish up RitW, and to continue adventuring beyond that. Our group of intrepid adventurers was intact from the 1st session, 2 of the players were absent, but their characters were played ably by 2 other players in attendance (2 characters each).

Sørenklausøn - 1st Lvl. Viking Bard (Skald)
Eutropia - 1st Lvl. Amazonian Ranger
Atheas - 1st Lvl. Kimmerian Barbarian
Curnān - 1st Lvl. Kelt Berzerker
Lycus - 1st Lvl. Amazonian Ranger
Rhaskuscu - 1st Lvl. Kimmerian Witch
Alda - 1st Lvl. Ixian Monk

Dispensing with the Rats
…The party started the evening by entering the dungeon area, two-abreast, walking down the filth ridden stairway. Atheas and Eutropia lead the way by carelessly trotting down the slick ancient steps. Tests of Dexterity checks were made, Atheas succeeded ... Eutropia did not ... causing an unceremonious fall down the stairs on her backside (1 pt of damage to boot). After regaining her composure and imploring the others in the party to proceed with caution, the rest of the party descended and joined her at the bottom. Soon after reaching the dungeon proper, the Bloated Daemon Rat made her presence known, and melee ensued in short order. After taunting the party, the Daemon Rat began to ponderously approach them, with 3 giant rat minions racing ahead to attack. Into the fray! The rats took the initiative for the 1st round of combat. Alda, Rhaskuscu, Soren & Eutropia chose to stay back and hold. Lycus had prepared his bow and stayed back ready to loose on the foul Daemonic beast quickly approaching, whilst Atheas & Curnan charged the Daemonic rodent (after deftly jumping over and avoiding the 3 giant rats approaching them). The 3 giant rats ch

I already posted this pic on the G+ page, but here again is my game bag, packed and ready to roll! .... Thank Jeff! First album (vinyl) I bought with my own money ... KiSS - Double Platinum (1978) ... somehow from there, my next album purchase didn't occur until 1980 with Loverboy's debut album ... we didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid, so I listened to a lot of radio at the time.

Yeah, obviously Jeff's AS&SH stuff is ready to run straight from the book ... but, 'The Lost City' & the 'DoD' stuff have taken/are going to take a bit of work to get where I want them ... but, yeah, still far less work than there would be for me coming up with material from whole cloth ... which is a good thing, because with my current life/work/school balance, if that was the case, I'd never get to play.

I've just started a new campaign, so almost by default, we're using 2nd Edition. I'm planning on running a mish-mash campaign. I'm going to use a couple classic AD&D/D&D modules with proper AS&SH modules as well, all set in Hyperborea proper. We're just finishing up 'Rats in the Walls', then hopefully a side excursion to Swampgate via 'The Black Moss-Hag of Lug' ... from there, into 'Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes' ... then, whilst in the Diamond Desert, finding 'The Lost City' and tackling that, and finally onto a hacked 'Desert of Desolation' ... I know this sounds ambitious (and players being players, may very well go entirely off the rails), but, if all goes as planned should be quite the ride for everyone. I've started a thread in the Campaign section if anyone cares to follow along.

How did the new players like the "old style" rules as compared to the heft that is 5e?

Actual game play went pretty smoothly. It took a bit to get the combat sequence down, but I had printed cheat sheets for that and it helped immensely. Many of the 5th Edition players are also regular DCC players, and since the general flow of game play is very similar between DCC and AS&SH (i.e. old school; rulings over rules), they actually adapted pretty easily. Funnily, the part that seemed to cause the most consternation was the character creation portion of the evening. I got the feeling that some of the players felt it was unnecessarily involved. Granted, there's probably more steps and/or items to note down with AS&SH/AD&D than D&D 5th, but it never occured to me that it could be so "painful" for some folks.

Campaign » Filthy Dogs of Hyperborea! (Iowa Chapter) » 9/12/2017 3:38 pm

I've  finally started my new AS&SH Campaign. I have 8 enthusiastic players (though only 7 for this first session) and we're under way.

The characters are thus:
- renklausøn - 1st Lvl. Viking Bard (Skald) (likes to regale the group with inappropriate limericks)
- Eutropia - 1st Lvl. Amazonian Ranger
- Atheas - 1st Lvl. Kimmerian Barbarian
- Curnā
n - 1st Lvl. Kelt Berzerker
- Lycus - 1st Lvl. Amazonian Ranger (
yep, two of 'em ... one male, one female ... this ought to be fun)
- Rhaskuscu - 1st Lvl. Kimmerian Witch
- Alda - 1st Lvl. Ixian Monk

We're starting off with 'Rats in the Walls', a bit more than mid-way through. Half of the group had already started 'RitW's' with me some time ago, but we were never able to finish. So this time, I decided we'd simply start where the original group ended and begin play "in media res", I provided background and information regarding what's happened so far to get everyone right into the action.

We had a character gen./get acquainted with the system session prior to playing (5 of the 7 players are new to AS&SH and have no early D&D/AD&D experience ... mainly 5th Edition players). Consequently, we didn't get to finish out the scenario due to time running short, but the players are directly on the precipice of encountering the big-bad, if you're familiar with 'RitW's'.

Potential Spoilers below! ... (Semi-)Inviso-text (highlight to read):
[color=#D3D3D3]The first session ended up being an extended combat. Where I dropped them (the "Temple" sub-basement), they were immediately set-upon by the Giant Rats. The fighters in the group stepped up to defend the group from the rats, and all in all, dispatched the vile creatures fairly easily. Though, the Barbarian & Bezerker did receive bites (minimal damage), an
