I'm looking to run a bunch of modules in the Gal Hills, surrounding mountains, and the Red Desert regions once I get and absorb the new rules.  Sadly, it will be a solo campaign, using the Mythic GM Emulator and the Scarlet Heroes rules.  Still, it should be fun!

Hey 1970!  I'm familiar with both of those products and particularly Scarlet Heroes is a neat take on the Old School rules.  I hope fortune brings many players of high quality your way!

Will the characters be locals and with a Keltic background or will they be visiting from another area like Khromarium? I ran a convention adventure with Keltic characters in the Gal Hills.  Lots of fun!

Keep us posted as to how it goes.

Have they all shipped? I haven't received a notice. I'm assuming no, but anxiety is getting the best of me.

Don't worry.  I think Jeff is sending them out in order of pledge. They are far from all sent out.

The purloiner has been a popular choice in my home game.

The fighter in my group liked the Purloiner since receiving his PDF.  We will have at least one. Steal and Heal has quite the appeal.

Eirvit - Here is what I think of the Conan 2d20 RPG:

Long story short, the full system is too clunky, the magic system is weak and not particularly Conan, and they are basically writing new (bad) pastiche to fill blanks that don't need to be filled.

That’s a fascinating challenge, Grimmshade! I want to hunt down the whole series. I suppose you wrote about _Barbarians of Lemuria_? I’ve been wanting to give that one a try, but I realistically can foist only so many systems (and hence so many “worlds”/campaigns) on my players.

For example, when I recently took a break from my long-lasting Norse-emulation Yggdrasill campaign for something clearly more fantastic, I vacillated between 2d20 Conan and Hyperborea. Hyperborea won out, mostly because of its fantastic setting, but also because I sensed that it would take at least four sessions for all of us to get used to the new 2d20 mechanics. My group also is fairly “beer-and-pretzels,” eschewing “roleplaying.” So I’m also getting increasingly interested in solid OSR location-based adventures in sandbox play. (I never played D&D myself — MERP and Champions and d6 Star Wars for me — until 3/3.5.)

We’ve only played one session of “Rats in the Walls”, but so far AS&SH promises to deliver nicely!

Played champions for every genre for 20+ years then got hooked on AS&SH in 2012.  Never looked back.Good system, outta the ballpark classes and setting kept my interest.

I've been letting my group know I want to get back to AS&SH when 2e was available in print (I only use PDFs for quick searching a pulling out the bits I need: I have a hard time reading them as I would a physical book). While they have two groups of PCs in my campaign world (one 6th - 7th level, one their henchmen run as a one-off that turned into a mini-campaign of now 3rd level) I've been itching to do a Viking-themed game, set in my version of Earth, post-Atlantean apocalypse (codename "Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Old Terra", or SSOOT, pronounced "soot" http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/wink.png
).

Will you try to balance the character classes or let everyone play what they want? You mentioned a viking theme would this mandate the race or any class selections?

I won't ban anything, but in keeping with the theme I'd strongly urge them to play an appropriate class. To enforce the theme I've toyed with simple renaming of the classes for Viking characters:
Fighter becomes Huscarle
Barbarian becomes TBD
Cleric becomes Godi
Berserker stays the same
Etc.

But in keeping with my "no significant house-rules" I wouldn't alter the classes aside from a name change.
I'd also probably use thematic elements from Vikings and Valkyries, as well as other Viking resources (some gaming, some historical, some fictional). By "thematic elements" I mean things like divine blessings, using looted weapons and armor bestowing curses, etc.

Sounds really neat. I like the name changes to set the mood.

Actually, I've made the decision to use AS&SH for eveything, from here on out.  All my home campaigns and FRPG con games will now be run with AS&SH.

Same boat.  Though I do run some con games with Hollow Earth Expedition (Jonny Quest, Thundarr, and their ilk)

I am in the process of starting a new campaign in Hyperborea, but will be using the Mythras rules instead of the AS&SH rules.  Setting details will be pretty much out of the new book (already grooving on the weather rules).  Sorcery will come from the exquisite Mythras-based "Monster Island" sandbox as will the campiagn's serpent and lizard folk.

I deeply respect Ghul's d20 rules set, but just am not into the d20 level/class sort of gaming right now.  If I ever return to it, AS&SH is going to be high on my list of rules for it.

Great rule-set though my book says RuneQuest.   IMO the classes are the best thing about the AS&SH system as they flow straight from the Hyperborean paradigm.  I'd be interested too hear how it all works out!

I've just started a new campaign, so almost by default, we're using 2nd Edition. I'm planning on running a mish-mash campaign. I'm going to use a couple classic AD&D/D&D modules with proper AS&SH modules as well, all set in Hyperborea proper. We're just finishing up 'Rats in the Walls', then hopefully a side excursion to Swampgate via 'The Black Moss-Hag of Lug' ... from there, into 'Ghost Ship of the Desert Dunes' ... then, whilst in the Diamond Desert, finding 'The Lost City' and tackling that, and finally onto a hacked 'Desert of Desolation' ... I know this sounds ambitious (and players being players, may very well go entirely off the rails), but, if all goes as planned should be quite the ride for everyone. I've started a thread in the Campaign section if anyone cares to follow along.

Sounds great actually.  Lots done already taking the pressure off.

Haven't really done anything gaming wise in what feels like forever. Started getting the itch again the last couple of days. Think I'm finally going to start working in earnest on Alus Mercury, it's been percolating in my mind for a long time now.

I'm sure all this talk of, and growing excitement in waiting for the 2nd edition to arrive helped get the juices flowing. Hopefully I get something good enough worked out that I might even run it at home or online or at a convention. We shall see.

Please do and run at GaryCon!!!

OT: Does anyone have any experience in running AS&SH for complete RPG newbies? Did you attempt to simplify things even further, or did you throw your player's to the wolves? How'd it go?

I had two RPG newbies in my first campaign and I threw them to the wolves. They got lots of help from the persons next to them but caught on quickly.  At conventions I strip away lots of the system rules that I use at home.  I want them to have a fun experience and buy the game rather than a mediocre time because I slowed the game to teach rules.

I was curious as to how many folks on the forum are starting a new campaign with the 2nd edition of AS&SH coming out.  I would also like to know where their current campaign is taking place on Hyperborea and if that will change with the new campaign.

For my experience the characters have spent 5 real years using the area around Khromarium as their base of operations.  I was thinking of having more of a freebooter campaign moving from Brigands Bay to Port Zangerios and around the Eastern Islands.

From practical experience I have had a group that has played a variety of classes and sub-classes and found they all mix well.  The sub-classes are more popular with my players, one plays a fighter and all the rest have played sub-classes.  I think the sub-classes are so intriguing that folks want to try them.
